A woman whose ex-boyfriend is on trial for raping and murdering a student claimed in a video shown to the court that she sat on the victim's face for up to 15 minutes during bondage play - in what has come as a shocking twist in the already sordid case.

The chilling video, which was filmed by public defenders days after her then-boyfriend Seth Mazzaglia was arrested, throws doubt on claims made by the prosecutions' key witness Kathryn McDonough, who previously told the court that she had not had any sexual involvement with Lizzi Marriott.

Mazzaglia's defense team just needs to convince one juror in the Dover, New Hampshire courtroom that McDonough, 20, is lying to spare him a first-degree murder conviction.

In the video, which was filmed on October 17, 2012, McDonough tells public defender Joachim Barth that she sat on 19-year-old Elizabeth 'Lizzi' Marriott's face during bondage sex for '10 to 15 minutes'.

In October 2012, police launched a widespread search for a missing New Hampshire college student named Elizabeth Marriott.

Expert weighs in on Seth Mazzaglia trial

Jurors heard the recordings as part of the state's redirect, which was recorded four months after Lizzi Marriot's death.

Mazzaglia's ex-girlfriend was on the stand for nine days.

Defense attorney Dave Ruoff said it's unheard of to have a single witness on the stand for so long. He said it demonstrates how important her testimony is to the defense in the case and the prosecution.

"The cross-examination has been very thorough and very organized and fairly effective," Ruoff said.

McDonough said she had nothing to do with Marriott's murder but admitted to helping destroy evidence. She said she had no choice but to help Mazzaglia get rid of Marriot's body because she feared she would be harmed.

"The testimony of this one witness that has been on the stand has been epic," Ruoff said.

Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott was killed on 10/9/12 according to prosecutors. The State says that Marriott died during a non-consensual bondage, domination and sadomasochism (BDSM) threesome with Mazzaglia and his live-in girlfriend, Kathryn “Kat” McDonough, who was 19 at the time. Mazzaglia allegedly strangled Marriott with a rope while McDonough participated, even tightening the rope herself. HER BODY HAS NEVER BEEN FOUND.

The defense claims this was a sexual bondage game gone wrong. Mazzaglia is now saying that girlfriend, McDonough, killed Marriott by tightening the rope around her neck during consensual sex. He said he originally told police he did it to cover for his girlfriend.

Mazzaglia is charged with two first-degree murder charges and second-degree murder. These charges fit alternate theories of how Marriott was murdered. He's also charged with conspiracy to commit tampering with witnesses and informants, conspiracy to commit falsifying physical evidence and criminal solicitation (implements for escape and other contraband).

McDonough plead guilty to conspiracy, witness tampering and hindering prosecution for a reduced sentence of 1 1/2 to 3 years. Part of her plea deal includes testifying against Mazzaglia in the murder trial.

I have not followed this case at all.

I spotted it as one that is popular... no wonder with salacious references to sex and even a "Dominatrix"

So I thought RT should have a trhread to follow the trial at least.

From what little I have read... I don't see how Seth Mazzaglia can be convicted of anything, proved BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT... with a clear liar being the prosecution star witness? There is NO BODY... so no evidence of exactly what happened to Elizabeth Marriott... other than testimony of McDonough.

After 10 days, attorneys on Monday finished their questioning of the state's star witness in the Seth Mazzaglia murder trial.

Defense attorneys continued pushing Kat McDonough, Mazzaglia's ex-girlfriend, to explain her multiple versions of Lizzi Marriott's death.

McDonough faced a final grilling about crucial points that the jury heard many times over -- that McDonough told Mazzaglia's defense team that Marriott had a seizure and died while tied up having sex with her, but later told a grand jury that Mazzaglia had strangled her to death and then raped her.

"You trusted us with the truth?" defense attorney Joachim Barth asked.

"I trusted you guys with a story that was made up off the top of my head," McDonough said.

"Then what you're saying now is that there is no difference between the police and us, that we both just needed a lie," Barth said.

"My plan was to never tell anyone the truth of what happened," McDonough said.

McDonough stood by her story, saying that what she told the grand jury and the trial jury is to be believed.

The end to McDonough's testimony came somewhat abruptly Monday afternoon, and without a break, an expert on domestic abuse took the stand.

Dr. Scott Hampton spoke in general terms about the techniques abusers use to control their partners and explained why a victim might comply with unusual demands.

Hampton said victims in such cases will often tell inconsistent stories about what they're going thorough, but once they're separated from an abuser and feel safe, they may then tell the truth.

He is scheduled to return to the stand Tuesday morning.

After the Arias débâcle I am inclined to think that if psychobabble is the answer... then it was a stupid question.

DV can be offered as a reason that this witness might have lied earlier... but regardless her testimony now can not possibly be accepted BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT.

It is a CERTAINTY that she lied (convincingly) in one of her versions... so NO VERSION can be relied on

Even if... sexual contact is established... it does not speak to WHEN let alone the circumstances of the "event"... consensual or not.

The state and defense have agreed on stipulations... that a fingerprint found on Lizzi's car belongs to Kat McDonough, that hair found at Pierce Island belongs to Lizzi Marriott, that Seth Mazzaglia had a TD bank account with about $1,000... with several withdrawals made.. and that the handwriting on a document was analyzed and proven to belong to Seth Mazzaglia.
