Pistorius says that he told Reeva to get down and call the police "in a low tone".

He says he didn't whisper. Nel says that if someone said he whispered "he would be lying".

"Yes my lady," says Pistorius.

Nel tells him: "It was you."

Pistorius says that it was a mistake.

Nel tells him not to think of the implications of the question.

Nel said one would expect Reeva to say something when he got up.

Pistorius says: "I would not be able to say what somebody would say in that situation."

9:33 am
He said that she never said that she was going to the toilet.

Nel says one would expect her to ask "Oz where are you going?" after he got out of bed.

Pistorius says he doesn't know. Nel again says it's because Pistorius' version is improbable.

9:32 am
Nel says that it's another example of tailoring his evidence.

Pistorius says that if he was tailoring his evidence he would say that he was speaking in a low tone and not a whisper.

Nel moves to Reeva speaking to him. He got up while she was lying in bed and didn't ask what he was doing. He said: "baba, I can't sleep."

9:29 am
Nel is focusing on the difference between whispering and low tone.

He asks why he is focusing away from it.

Pistorius says: "I do not want to steer away from a whisper, a whisper would suit me better."

Nel tells him that he's such a stickler for detail and being correct that he corrected Nel. Why didn't he mention the noise in the bail application?

Pistorius says he was in his cell at the time, he was exhausted and traumatised.

He adds that when he saw the window open it confirmed the noise that he heard.

Nel tells him he is tailoring his account again.

9:38 am
Nel says it doesn't make sense that they didn't speak to each other about the sound.

Nel says he didn't identify the noise during the bail application.

Pistorius says that he heard a noise, but he didn't say what it was in his bail application.

9:37 am
Nel said: "you had no doubt" that it was the window.

Pistorius says the noise was loud because it was sliding open.

Nel says Reeva would hear it as well. Pistorius confirms this.

He said that "she would have been as scared as I was". He says that there wouldn't be a response.

Nel: "I don't agree with you Mr Pistorius. You don't want to concede anything, even when we speculate about facts."

9:36 am
Nel says that she is talking to him - she is awake.

Nel "I'm going to take you to the first time you heard a noise in the bathroom."

Pistorius said the first noise he heard was the bedroom window.

Pistorius says his eyes were on the bathroom down the passageway.

He said that if he looked down he may have seen Reeva's silhouette.

He says he shouted for the intruders to get out of his house. He pauses then cries and his voice becomes high pitched as he says: "get the f*** out of my house. Get the f*** out of my house".

The court is adjourned.

9:51 am
Pistorius says: "I wanted to chase the people out of my house...

"If there's somebody in your house in the middle of the night, I'm sure anybody would want to chase them out."

He said his arms were not extended the same way that they were when he shot at the watermelon.

9:49 am
Pistorius said he heard the noise, froze, got his firearm from under his bed.

Took the gun out of the holster and started making his way to the bathroom with the gun in front of me.

He said he told Reeva to 'get down'.

Pistorius confirms that he approached with his arm bent and down at his side.

9:48 am
Nel says he is not listening to the questions. He is thinking of the implications and tailoring his evidence.

Pistorius says he doesn't understand how it changes anything.

Nel asks why the window hitting the frame wasn't mentioned in his plea explanation.

Pistorius says he is unsure.

9:43 am
Nel said that in his bail application, Pistorius said he did not know the window was open. He did - it's in his bail application.

Pistorius says that he understood his plea explanation.

The trial has been adjourned for another half an hour.

Proceedings will resume at around 10.30am (BST).

9:55 am
Pistorius is now stood in the dock with brother Carl and sister Aimee.

His is facing away from the gallery of the court.

He barely ever looks at Nel as he answers his questions. Choosing instead to address the judge.

He says that he asked Reeva to call the police before shouting at the intruders to get out.

Nel says "you've just spoken to her, you whispered at her just now, why would you shout at her now?"

Pistorius says that it was because he was in a safe place between the intruders and Reeva and they would know that he was in close proximity.

10:34 am
He says he shouted at the intruders and shouted for Reeva to call the police.

Nel asks him what he shouted at Reeva.

Pistorius: "I said 'call the police'."

Nel asks if he used Reeva's name. He says he thinks he did.

10:33 am
The court is sitting again and Pistorius says he is ready to proceed.

Nel asks him why he got emotional. He says it's because when he shouted "get the f*** out of my house" it's what he said to Reeva.

Pistorius says "no my lady... I'm traumatised by the events".

Nel says that if he was wrong Pistorius' legal team would have got up to challenge him.

Roux does eventually get up and ask to check the record.

They will check during the lunch adjournment.

10:44 am
Then he says he started screaming again.

Nel says that there's something very important that he's forgotten to mention what happened.

Nel says: "The door slammed."

Pistorius says that he did say that the door slammed earlier this morning. Nel says that this is not so.

10:42 am
After he screamed for the people to get out, he says he kept away from the corner into the bathroom. He moved forward little by little until he could see more of the bathroom.

He said that he couldn't see in the bathroom, but he couldn't see outlines.

He could see the shape of the bathtub.

"I then moved forward, I had my pistol in front of me... I stayed as far away as I could from the wall to where the basins are around the corner."

He says his eyes were looking to see if there was someone in the bathroom to ambush him and he was looking at the window and the toilet door.

10:40 am
Pistorius says he never had his arms extended. He says he didn't want whoever was there to grab his firearm so he kept it close to him.

He said his arm was in front of him and his other arm was helping him to balance. He says he was struggling to move up the passage.

He says his firearm was never pointed in the same direction and it moved as he moved along.

10:38 am
Nel says he could have screamed when he peered around the corner.

But Pistorius says that he was too scared to scream at that point.

He says that if he had stayed at the wall, Reeva would have been in harms way.

Nel says "okay" sarcastically that he had got it wrong. He says it doesn't make sense. "How can you be less scared walking down a passageway to danger?"

Pistorius: "In the passage I didn't have a choice." He says he hoped they would leave before he got to them.

Nel says "Obviously Reeva never responded."

Pistorius confirms that he didn't wait for a response.

He agrees that the window was open and the toilet door was closed.

Nel asks him about the particular noise of the door closing and if it was significant. Pistorius confirms that it is.

Nel says that the door closing or shutting is not mentioned in his bail application.

Pistorius says he is not sure and Nel says it is a significant piece of information.

It's not in his plea explanation either. Nel: "That because you never said it sir, that's because you've invented it.

"It's your version, not mine."

He says he doesn't believe he ever told his counsel about the closing door.

10:48 am
Nel asks why he didn't give that evidence.

Pistorius responds saying that he mentioned it this morning.

He says he heard the door slam. He confirms he is convinced that it was the toilet door slamming.

Nel asks him why it would slam.

Pistorius says that it's because someone had closed themselves in or exiting the toilet, or kicking it or bumping it shut.

10:47 am
Nel asks if he heard the door shut before or after he screamed at Reeva.

He says that it was after he screamed at Reeva.

Nel says he hasn't mentioned the door slamming shut since the tea break.

Pistorius says he heard it in the process of him shouting at the intruders to get out and for Reeva to call the police.

After he heard the sound, he discharged the firearm.

He said it was because he thought someone was coming out. He says he didn't want to shoot at someone.

He says he didn't have time to think what he was doing.

Nel says that he's thought about events the entire time, but not at this time. Nel asks if it is his defence that he fired the gun at the perceived attacker.

P: "No my lady" he added: "I fired at the door, my lady."

Nel asks him again if he fired at the perceived attacker. Pistorius says no.

10:59 am
At this point he says the gun was still in front of him. He was still holding the wall in the bathroom because his balance is worse on tiles.

He says his arm was bent and his arm was not extended - he says he was not aiming at the door. He says he was "staying put" to try and make sense of it.

He says his firearm was pointed at the door. Nel says there's a difference between aiming at the door and pointing at the door.

Pistorius says he was pointing at the door.

10:57 am
Pistorius says he fired before he could see the door move. He says as he heard the noise he fired.

Nel: "You could see the door, you could see the handle. You never saw the door or the handle move?"

Pistorius says he heard the noise and fired at the same time.

10:56 am
He says he then heard a noise coming from the toilet. He heard what he thought was the door opening, the sound of a piece of wood moving.

Pistorius says the door frame was handmade so the frame when you pulled it closed it would make a clicking noise. When you opened it, it would do the same.

That's what he says he interpreted the noise to be.

10:55 am
He says that he noticed nobody was in the bathroom and that the toilet door was closed.

Nel asks him his thought patterns.

Pistorius: "Many many thoughts going through my mind. I was scared there might be someone that might come through the window... that there was someone in the toilet preparing to come out and attack me."

10:54 am
Nel asks why he thought there were people in the toilet.

Pistorius says he thought it was a possibility because he heard the door slamming.

Nel turns to Pistorius' bail affidavit. In that he said that he saw the door was closed and that he thought someone was in there. There was no slamming mentioned.

He said he doesn't have an explanation.

Now he is stood in the break with his head on his hands as his psychologist rushes over to him.

11:04 am
Nel says "you know exactly, you fired at Reeva".

Pistorius breaks down again. and Nel asks him why he is getting emotional again. He cries: "I did not fire at Reeva".

Court is adjourned again.

11:03 am
He says his defence is that he didn't have time to interpret the situation and he fired out of fear.

Nel says he can't have to lines of defence. Nel says that he fired at the attacker, to ward off the attack. Pistorius says he didn't fire to kill anyone.

He repeats that he didn't fire to attack.

Nel gets a photograph to address the point about the movement of the magazine rack.

While they find the photograph, here is the tweet in which Pistorius mentions going into "full combat recon mode"

11:34 am
Pistorius says he heard a noise inside the bathroom that he perceived to be the noise of the door opening.

Nel says he is tailoring the evidence again. He says it couldn't have been that noise at all so to say so was tailoring his evidence.

Pistorius repeats that he heard "wood moving".

He says he perceived it as being the door opening.

Pistorius: "In retrospect I probably heard the magazine rack moving."

11:32 am
Nel says that being a trained person the court would expect him not to fire without reason. He says the court won't accept it as a mistake.

Pistorius says he was referring to combat mode training for certain situations.

He says there was a conversation with gun expert Sean Rens about what you would do if there was a combat situation, not necessarily at home.

11:29 am
Nel asks why he didn't tell them he was armed.

Pistorius: "I didn't want to evoke or, I think if I said I was armed, it might leave them with less options that they might act more violently, more defensively, or they might react in a more hostile way."

Nel says he was "a person in control" of the whole situation.

He asks him what combat mode was. Pistorius says he didn't use the word "stealth mode". He confirms that he has used the term "combat mode".

He says he tried to get into combat mode as he had been 'trained', but he didn't have his legs on like he does when he trains.

11:27 am
He says he shouted when he was in the passage, but in the bathroom he can't remember.

Nel asks him why he can't remember if he shouted at her from the bathroom.

Pistorius: "I'm not sure my lady".

Nel tells him "I'm not sure" is not a reason.

Pistorius remembers screaming "get out". He says it's possible he was shouting at Reeva to get out. He was repeating the same words he shouted from the passage.

He never said "I'm armed, I'm going to shoot."

He said that this was because he didn't want them to know he was armed.

11:26 am
Pistorius says that he remembers shouting "get out".

Nel is now asking if that is all he can remember shouting. Pistorius says "that's correct my lady"

Nel: "If you shouted 'get out' would that have caused Reeva to respond?"

P: "I don't think so my lady."

He says he addressed her in the bathroom after he fired the gun.

11:24 am
Roux and Nel are now arguing about the cross examination being repetitive when Pistorius becomes emotional.

The judge agrees with Nel that she does not think it is repetitive.

Nel says he got emotional because he got his defence mixed up. Pistorius says he disagrees.

Nel says he indicated his defences to get mixed up and that's why he got emotional. "Nothing else".

Nel asks him why not empty the magazine and why didn't he fire at the window.

Nel says there was a possibility that there was someone in the toilet. "Did you not think that there's danger there?"

Pistorius says that he heard the noise there and that that's where his focus was.

He says he fired a warning shot into the shower it could have ricocheted and hit himself.

Pistorius says he didn't intent to fire his gun but when he heard a noise, he fired.

Nel says "your gun just went off." "Is it like the glock, did it just go off or did you fire the gun."

Pistorius: "I fired where the firearm was pointed where I perceived the danger to be."

11:59 am
He says he remembers firing the gun as quick as he could.

He can't remember why he stopped.

Pistorius: "I fired in very quick succession."

He said that he heard a noise that caused him to start fire. He says again that he is not sure why he stopped.

11:57 am
Pistorius says neighours Mr Burgher and Ms Johnson heard screaming and that it was him.

11:56 am
Nel says it would have been prudent for the witnesses to have the recording played to them.

Pistorius says he doesn't have a view and the judge interjects to say he has told him he doesn't have a view. He's answered the question.

Nel asks him if he has listened to the recording. Pistorius confirms that he was asked to scream in a high-pitched voice where he currently resides.

"I have never screamed like that before... I was screaming out to Reeva, I was screaming for the Lord to help me, I ran onto the balcony, I shouted and screamed for help. I don't think one scream was the same, you don't scream in a monotone fashion."

11:54 am
Pistorius's voice has been tested. He says he has watched interviews where he has been on field playing football with people and had heard it then.

There is also a recording where his shouting is high pitched.

He asks why the recording was never played to the witnesses to identify the voice.

Pistorius says a specialist might be called to come forward.

Nel appears frustrated again as he says "that's not the question."

Pistorius says it's up to his counsel to decide what to ask and what not to ask.

11:52 am
Pistorius says he was screaming - he says he was screaming for Reeva to get the police.

He says he was screaming for her to call the police up until the time he returned to the bed. He said he screamed Reeva's name because he wanted to know where she was.

He says when he hit the bat on the door he was screaming out her name.

11:50 am
Pistorius says when he hit the door was hitting the cricket bat he was screaming.

Nel says he is arguing again and saying the Stipps "must be lying" about the lights.

Nel: "They said between the noises they heard screaming. Was that you?"

Pistorius asks in the first series of noises or the second set of noises.

11:48 am
Nel turns to the shouting and screaming.

He says neighbour Dr Stipp heard a woman's screaming - that must have been Pistorius' voice.

Pistorius says he was the only person who screamed that night.

Nel says that the Stipps looked and saw that the lights were on after the shots were fired.

Pistorius agrees that they did say that. Nel says 'they must be lying'. Pistorius says 'they must be'.

He says he can't remember when he put the lights on after the shooting.

11:46 am
The judge says that she is not sure what he is demonstrating.

Pistorius confirms that he did not hear the door locking.

Nel says for that version to be probable it would have to have slammed and closed at the time.

Pistorius says he was busy shouting - he wasn't quiet.

11:45 am
Nel tells him: "You never gave them a chance."

Pistorius says: "That's correct, my lady."

Nel is asking for a demonstration to put the key into the door, to turn it and take it out again.

"You never heard that?" - Pistorius says no.

The captain is asked to sit on the toilet to giggles of the court. Nel apologises saying he is not making a joke of it.

11:43 am
Pistorius says he couldn't think of any other words other than to "get out" and to ask Reeva to call out of the window.

He said that they could have got out of the window of the toilet.

Nel says one of the ways to get out was to come through the door but he "never gave them the chance".

"That's correct my lady," Pistorius responds.

11:40 am
Nel said that his pathologist understood it was a close grouping.

Pistorius said that it was not a close grouping considering how close he was to the door.

11:39 am
Pistorius says he wouldn't have heard the magazine rack moving while he was aiming.

He says that fits with Captain Mangena's evidence.

Nel says he changed his aim and shot at it.

Pistorius says he pointed at the door and discharged the firearm.

11:37 am
The picture shows blood next to the toilet and there are yellow tabs coming from the door.

Bullet A (the lower bullet in the picture below) is heading to the toilet - that hit her in the right hip. She then fell back onto the magazine rack.

Nel says after he heard the magazine rack he aimed towards that noise.

11:35 am
Nel gets a photograph to address the point about the movement of the magazine rack.

While they find the photograph, here is the tweet in which Pistorius mentions going into "full combat recon mode"

Pistorius says he didn't aim.

Nel says "was it just lucky that your gun was pointed?"

Pistorius breaks down as he says: "How would that be lucky she lost her life".

Judge Masipa asks to see counsel as the case is adjourned for lunch.

Nel says that if he was faced away from the bed when he put the fan down and looked to the right, he would have picked up a light.

Pistorius agrees, but says his back was facing the passage.

He maintains that the way he was looking, he could not have seen anything from the passage. He says he brought the fan in and he placed it. He adds: "And we don't know when Reeva got out of bed".

Nel says "not on your version."

1:06 pm
Nel suggested that Reeva could have used her mobile as a light to go down the passage.

Pistorius said it doesn't matter because he was turned away.

Nel said it is "devastating" for him because the light would have drawn his attention and he would have seen it in his peripheral vision.

1:04 pm
The court is back and Pistorius said he did not intend to shoot whoever was on the other side of the bathroom door.

Nel asks him if he had time to think. Pistorius responds saying that if he knew someone was there then it's a probability someone would get hit.

He said: "I didn't have time to think".

Nel: "Reeva could only have been in position with her right hip to the door if she was standing there talking to you."

Pistorius: "Yes, my lady".

Nel says the fact that she was standing facing the door is because she was talking to Pistorius and she was fleeing for her life.

"All the screams and shouts were at her", Nel says.

1:16 pm
He says that he would have shot higher, at chest height if he wanted to shoot at an intruder coming out through the door.

He says he did not fire to shoot the intruder, he fired because he got a shot.

He agrees with Nel that it was an accident.

Nel asks if there was an intruder, would it have been an accident?

Pistorius responds: "Yes my lady."

N: Who do you blame for the accident?

Pistorius: "Myself… I blame myself for taking Reeva's life."

1:13 pm
Pistorius agrees that he thought the intruder was coming out and that's why he shot.

Nel says they would have to use the handle.

Pistorius says his focus was on the door as a whole and not the handle.

1:12 pm
Nel asks him to demonstrate where the gun was when he fired the shot.

Pistorius demonstrates with his elbow bent, around shoulder height, and Nel says it was aimed.

Pistorius says his arm was not extended.

1:11 pm
Nel asked why Reeva didn't switch the light on to go to the toilet.

Pistorius answered that she probably used the light on her phone

He says he was probably screaming. Says he was scared and wanted to ask Reeva if she was phoning the police and wondering if someone was coming out of the bathroom.

"Then I got to the bed and then I realised Reeva wasn't there. And then I got off the bed [on the right hand side], I stuck my hand out and tried to feel the curtains to see if she was behind them.

"Then I started panicking... I couldn't hear her."

He got back to the bathroom and was screaming after her and was scared of going back into the room.

He put his shoulder between the shoulder and the door which he tried to rip open. But he couldn't so he ran back on his stumps to the open door and screamed for help.

He says he put his legs on.

1:22 pm
His evidence continued that his ears were ringing and that he was shouting for Reeva.

Nel says that we now know that the four shots are a reconstruction, Pistorius says he agrees.

Pistorius says he stayed where he was and he shouted for Reeva. He didn't know if there was still someone in the toilet or on the ladder.

He says he couldn't hear anything and had his gun pointed in front of him. Then he says he slowly made his way back to the bedroom, shouting out for Reeva.

1:19 pm
Nel asks if he can remember his evidence in chief about the firing of the shots.

"Before I know it I had fired four shots at the door", the evidence said.
1:18 pm

He says he doesn't know. Judge Masipa interjects to say that he doesn't know and the questioning is unfair.

Nel tells her "with the upmost respect, he knows. He's hiding it."

When he put his legs on, the gun was next to him on the bed and he ran to the toilet, trying to force the door open.

Nel asks why he took the gun along with him.

Pistorius says he didn't have a rational frame of mind so he doesn't know why.

Nel says the gun was left there after he shot and killed Reeva. "You fired the shot and left the gun there."

Nel asks for an adjournment until tomorrow morning and the judge agrees.

That's it until 8.30am (BST).

1:51 pm
Pistorius says he remembers shouting three times.

He went back and put his legs on, which were on the right hand side of the bed.

He says he put his legs and socks on as quick as he could.

1:50 pm
He adds that he was talking about the gun when he left it on the bathroom floor when he went to try and save Reeva's life.

Nel says he is frustrated by the questions because of his "improbable" version.

1:49 pm
Pistorius says that the gun in the bathroom was cocked.

Nel asks him why he is getting emotional and it's because of the questions rather than the event.

Pistorius says he is talking about Reeva. He says he can't remember how he opened the doors.

1:47 pm
Nel says it would have been easy to pull the trigger with the cocked gun.

Pistorius says he doesn't remember opening the curtains and he could have got through the door without opening them fully.

Nel tells him he had to part the curtains to get through the door.

He says he can't remember opening them. He says he would have flung them open.

Nel asks how it would have been possible to open both doors with a gun in his hands.

He says he's not sure but he would have held the handle with the gun in his hand.

1:45 pm
Nel tells him again that he's adapting as his recollection. He says it's a contradiction.

Judge Masipa says it's not a contradiction. She said there's a difference between knowing something and hoping another.

Pistorius says again that he ran onto the balcony to call for help.

He says he ran down the passage, he doesn't remember opening the curtains or the doors, but he remembers shouting and screaming for help.

He still had the gun in his hand at this point and it was cocked.

1:44 pm
Nel says he is tailoring his evidence.

Nel says if he checked the balcony there was at least "doubt in your mind" where Reeva was.

Pistorius says that there was hope in his mind, that's why he did the things he did. He says he was praying to God.

1:42 pm
Nel is going to keep on at this point - why did he say he checked the balcony.

Pistorius says it was a mistake.

Nel won't accept that he "spontaneously testified" that he went out onto the balcony.

Pistorius says he doesn't know why he said what he did.

1:41 pm
Nel says it must have been strange that the door would not open.

Pistorius says he thought that Reeva had maybe locked it from the inside. He says when he was shouting she must have got scared and locked herself in.

He ran out and checked the balcony then called for help.

Nel asks why he would say he checked on the balcony.

1:40 pm
Nel said that if he was still fearful of the intruders, he doesn't understand why he didn't check for a ladder. He says his version doesn't make sense.

Nel says the intruders came in in his version through the window up a ladder.

Pistorius confirms this was true.

1:39 pm
He said he went in the bathroom, tried to open the door and couldn't open it. Realised the door was locked and tried to rip it open.

Nel says the biggest issue is that he didn't check the bedroom window for a ladder. He was fixated between the door and the ladder.

Pistorius says when he thought it was Reeva he wouldn't have checked the ladder. He says he never checked it.

Nel says he can't make the leap that it was Reeva behind the door.

1:37 pm
Nel says that when he went back to the bedroom, Pistorius wasn't convinced it was Reeva.

Pistorius: "I was terrified of the whole situation".

He says he doesn't remember why he kept his firearm. He said part of him was still hoping it wasn't Reeva.

1:36 pm
Nel tells him it's his version and "you have to build it as you go."

Pistorius says he left the firearm on the bed to feel the curtains for Reeva.

Nel says he has difficulty with the huge leap of shooting at intruders to realising it was Reeva.

Pistorius says "I don't think so."

He adds: "When that thought came over me, nothing else mattered."

1:34 pm
He says he got onto the bed and realised that Reeva was not on the bed.

Nel: "Whatever you did, she's not on the bed. Whatever you did, she's not behind the curtains."

Pistorius says he didn't check all the curtains, he checked the foot of them and then ran back to the bathroom.

Nel says the first thing she would have done is left the bedroom through the bedroom door.

1:33 pm
Nel tells him it's unreasonable to think Reeva would be in the bathroom if he hadn't checked everywhere in the house.

He says "It was an intruder behind the door. That was your perception."

Pistorius says it was his first reaction adding that "nothing was normal that night".

1:31 pm
Nel says that if the fan was where it appears in pictures from the scene, he couldn't have walked along the curtains feeling if she was behind them because he would have walked into the fan.

Pistorius says it wasn't in his way and he can't remember tripping over any items on the floor.

He says he rushed back to the bathroom.

Nel says he forgot to mention why he didn't check the bedroom door. Pistorius says the incident was in the bathroom and his fear at this point was that he had shot Reeva.

1:29 pm
Nel says it is strange that the hair clipper is standing upright and hasn't fallen over.

Pistorius says he doesn't remember where things were in the room.

1:28 pm
Nel tells him he must have been panicking at this point.

Pistorius says it's not even a metre and he put his hand on the curtain and that's when he thought she must be in the toilet.

Nel asks why he felt along the curtains and not the floor.

Pistorius says that if he came across her on the floor he would have tripped over her.

1:26 pm
Pistorius says he checked the bed for Reeva, but can't remember the duvet being on the bed.

He says the duvet "has nothing to do with anything". He says his mind was so fixated on finding Reeva. He says that last time he saw her she was under the duvet.

He says he knows she wasn't on the bed because he crossed the bed. He was hoping she was on the floor and felt there with his hands.
