He says he doesn't understand why he didn't check Reeva was okay.

Pistorius repeated that he wanted to get between Reeva and harm.

Nel says that it's because he isn't telling the truth.

Nel says that's why he spoke to her in his plea explanation but not his bail application.

Nel says he invented the discussion with her.

Pistorius denies this.

He said to Reeva to get down and call the police.

His attention was towards the closet.

He said his intention was "to put myself between Reeva and where I thought the people were, which was in the bathroom."

Nel says if he cared about Reeva he would have checked that she was there and that she knew he was there.

He says he thought she was in the bed.

Nel says he has a good memory until the time that he fired the shots. Pistorius agrees.

Nel: "When you got your gun, you had to at least bend down and get it from under the bed."

Pistorius said he was on his stumps so he was using his hands and legs to get there as quickly as he could. He was looking back toward the passage.

Court resumes again and Pistorius appears more composed.

Judge Masipa checks that he is okay to proceed.

He says he is an Nel continues.

Nel says he is keeping quiet because Pistorius is clearly in distress.

The judge says she understands.

Pistorius: "I didn't want to take anybody's life. I screamed for the intruders to get out of my home."

Nel tells him that he is arguing again and he should answer the questions.

Nel: "Your safety was disengaged, you were ready to shoot... you wanted to shoot."

Pistorius said "I was never ready to shoot. At any point I was never ready to shoot."

Nel asks why he would arm himself if he wasn't ready to shoot.

He points out that he released the safety mechanism. Pistorius said that it was so that he was ready to shoot.

He says he didn't storm to the bathroom and he walked extremely cautiously towards the bathroom.

Nel says a reasonable person would have looked where Reeva was. "But you didn't. You just grabbed a gun."

Pistorius acknowledges that he never checked if she was scared.

Nel said the first thought that went through his mind was to arm himself.

Pistorius said there was no time to talk with Reeva.

Nel suggests that they could have hidden behind the bed or on the balcony. Pistorius says it's a possibility, he didn't want harm to come to Reeva so he put himself between her and the danger.

Nel says that it doesn't make sense that he felt vulnerable but he approached the danger.

Pistorius says you hear about people being attacked in their own home all the time.

He said he started shouting and screaming as he entered the passageway.

He says he screamed for them to get out of his house and shouted for Reeva to call the police.

He said there was no response from Reeva.

Nel says "You're vulnerable but you go towards the danger."

He says that he wanted to protect Reeva.

Nel: "The fact of the mater is that if you stayed in that room, Reeva would be alive. I'm testing your version which isn't true."

Pistorius says there is a massive difference between ready to shoot and wanting to shoot.

He said that if he came across someone he would have to defend himself.

Nel said he can remember so much detail. He said that if there was any movement he would have fired.

Nel says his intention was to confront the intruders.

Pistorius says he didn't want a confrontation, he wanted them to get out of the house. He says he thought maybe they weren't there to leave.

He wasn't sure if they had left the house or not.

Nel tells him he has to tell the court why he didn't take Reeva out through the bedroom door.

He says he doesn't know why he did it.

Nel says it doesn't make sense to go towards the danger.

Pistorius tells the court that that's not his way. "That's my personality. Instead of cowering and running away, I want to put myself between Reeva and the danger."

Pistorius says it is easy to look back and talk about all the possibilities.

Nel says it's also easy to come up with a version off events for why he killed Reeva.

Pistorius says his version has stayed the same "I didn't come up with a version." He got the facts in August, but his version hasn't changed.

He says he isn't sure why they didn't go out through the main door.

Pistorius said he has very limited mobility on his stumps.

Pistorius says he thought she was safe and that he was making it safer for her.

Nel says he gave unbelievable detail about thought processes in his evidence in chief. He is testing those thought processes.

Pistorius repeats that he was putting himself between Reeva and the perceived danger.

Nel points out that if he stayed in the room he would have been able to see the passage way clearly. If there was someone there they would have five metres between them.

He says he isn't sure why he walked down the passage, it was his instinct.

Nel says he finds his instinct strange. Because instinct would have made sure Reeva was safe.

Nel says that the only way into his house from the bathroom is down the passageway.

Nel said he got no response from Reeva. Pistorius said it was correct.

Pistorius: "I was shouting and screaming and they were very loud at the people to get out."

He peered around the corner towards the basin but couldn't see anyone so he stepped back.

He confirms that the bathroom door was closed and that normally it would be open.

Nel says he's made another mistake.

"I never ever said the door was kicked. I said I heard the door slam".

Nel points out that he said it earlier. Pistorius says he made a mistake.

Nel: "You are thinking of something that never happened and you have to keep up... you have to keep up with an untruth."

He said he hoped they were fleeing and was 100% sure someone had got into the house.

When he entered the bathroom he says he saw that the window was open.

There were lights outside the window that were shining in so the bathroom wasn't as dark as the bedroom.

Nel tells him he's going too quickly.

When he was at the bathroom entrance he kept quiet. While in the passage he says he heard a door slam shut.

Pistorius: "I thought that somebody was going into the toilet or somebody had kicked the door."

Pistorius said he peered around the corner and kept his distance.

He moved slowly forward to the entrance of the bathroom.

When he reached the corner and he said he wasn't sure if somebody was against the basins.

Pistorius says he had to consider there was someone inside the toilet or on a ladder.

Nel picks up on the word 'consider'.

He considered when to be quiet, when to walk slowly along the passage.

Pistorius says he "didn't have the luxury of time".

Nel says that if there is somebody in the toilet they have limited space to move. If they want to get out of the toilet what would they be able to do?

Pistorius: "They could climb out of the window or come out through the door."

Nel says Pistorius wants the court to believe that an intruder came through the window then closed the door.

Pistorius says he is not sure what an intruder would do if he was caught off-guard.

Nel: "It's so far fetched that it would happen that it's improbable"

Pistorius: "If I was sure I wouldn't have made a mistake... I forgot about that point. I can't explain why I forgot."

Nel is sticking with this point... "I'm putting it to you that your mistakes are as convincing as your evidence in the way you deliver it. And that's a problem. Do you want to comment on it?"

Pistorius says the sound of the gunshot means you wouldn't have heard anyone scream. He couldn't hear his own voice.

He said it is not possible for neighbours to have heard a woman's screams.

Nel asks him if he is making a mistake again. "you forgot about your ears ringing."

Nel asks if she screamed at all as he shot her four times.

Nel asks if he is sure she didn't scream after the first shot.

Pistorius pauses: "At no point did Reeva shout out or scream."

Pistorius says he doesn't think he would have heard her screaming because of the ringing in his ears from the gunshot.

Nel points out that he said she didn't scream.

Nel: "She was standing upright in front of the door when you shot her."

Pistorius said that in her mind it must have been that she thought Pistorius was retreating to the bathroom.

He said that she had been involved in a similar incident in the past and hadn't been able to speak for a couple of days.

Nel says this is the most improbable part of his version. "She would have responded".

Pistorius: "That's not true, my lady."

Nel: "In fact she is standing on your version and the states version, she is standing behind the door facing the bathroom. If she was scared, she would not have been there, she would have been hidden somewhere in the toilet."

He says she was talking to Pistorius and that's the reason.

"She wasn't scared of anything, except you."

He stood at the point where he had moved back to and he could see the window with his firearm still in front of him.

He shouted for Reeva to call the police and kept shouting.

Nel says that this is the most improbable part of his evidence. She is three metres away from him in the toilet and she "never uttered a word". "She would have been scared".

Pistorius said she would have stayed quiet because she was scared.

Pistorius said that the whole time he was thinking that he needed to be careful because his life was in danger.

Nel asks if he didn't go there to shoot someone why did he go down there.

Pistorius responds saying his intention was to make the person flee.

Nel requests that there is an adjournment until Monday morning, Roux doesn't object.

Pistorius says at the time he perceived it as being someone coming out to attack him.

Nel says it is the first time he has said that in the case.

Pistorius had his eyes darting between the window and the door. But the gun was pointed at the door.

"I heard a noise from inside the bathroom which I thought or perceived as someone coming out to attack me."

Nel: I've heard your evidence of how it affected you and how you felt. You'll agree with me that for Reeva being in that small cubicle when four shots were fired must have been horrific.

"What happened to her that night was unthinkable. I haven't heard you say anything about how she must have reacted."

Judge Masipa holds proceedings after a light flashed in the court coming from the gallery.

Nobody answers.

Pistorius said that Reeva slept at his house the night before on the right hand side of the bed.

Nel asks why she would leave her flip flops on the left hand side of the bed.

Pistorius says the bed is not in the middle of the room and there isn't much space on the right.

On the other side there's a sofa and so she would always put her things there, Pistorius said.

Pistorius says that her 'slops' - flip flops - were also out of the bag.

He said that they had been moved in the photographs.

They were "neatly on the left-hand side of the bed" according to Nel.

Pistorius says he doesn't know why her jeans were the only item of clothing that was out of place.

The case has resumed and Nel starts by telling Pistorius "your version is so improbable it cannot reasonably or possibly be true. It is untrue."

He says that his version has been concocted to fit with the state's case.

Nel says that Reeva was known for being "very neat" and all her clothes were packed away in her overnight bag.

Her jeans were the only clothing that was out of place.

Nel now moves to the food that was still in Reeva's stomach.

Pistorius said that she ate eight hours before dying.

Pistorius says he doesn't know why and Nel tells him that she must have eaten with him two hours before she was killed.

Pistroius says: "I cannot comment."

Nel says "isn't it that Reeva wanted to leave and that's why the jeans were out of place."

He adds: "I am saying, and it is the state's case, that she wanted to leave."

He is saying that they had an argument.

Pistorius: "The denims are inside out, so that would make sense that that's when she took them off."

Usually Reeva would sleep on the left-hand side of the bed.

Pistorius said that he was struggling with his shoulder for a couple of weeks so he had stayed on the left hand side when he stayed at hers.

She used her flip flops when she went downstairs. Pistorius says it is perhaps because the tiles were cold. He says he's sure she would have worn them that day.

Nel asks him if he can deny Van Rensburg's evidence.

He says he can't confirm it.

All he says is that he can remember a policeman in civilian clothing going upstairs.

Nel tells him that in his version of events, Colonel Van Rensburg was one of the first that went upstairs.

Pistorius says he can't remember who went upstairs and when or who went into the room.

Nel tells him that this "particular point I put to you is devastation for your version because it's an objective set of facts and it cannot fit with your version."

Pistorius says he agrees with Nel. He doesn't know if she switched the alarm off and went downstairs.

He says he has no explanation for the questions Nel is putting to him.

Pistorius says that he ate dinner just after 7pm. He said that Reeva could have eaten again after he fell asleep.

Nel tells him he is 'tailoring his evidence' again.

Pistorius says it would have suited him to say that they ate later but insists that they ate at around 7pm.

Pistorius says that the neighbour heard a woman talking, she did not say she heard a man and woman talking.

Nel tells him he is being argumentative.

He says it isn't doing his case any good telling him it's not doing him any favours.

It was revealed earlier in the trial that after six hours Reeva's stomach would be empty.

Nel says that a woman was heard talking at about 2am.

He asks if that could be when Reeva was eating.

Van Rensburg said that the fan was stood in front of the door, to the right of where it was photographed.

Nel asks why Mr Roux didn't put it to him that it wasn't where Pistorius said he put it in front of the bed.

Pistorius says he's not sure.

Nel says that van Rensburg's account puts the fan in front of the door and the curtains were open.

Pistorius says that van Rensburg says "we" went up and not "I" went up.

Van Rensburg said that his focus was on the tall tripod fan which was in front of the door.

Pistorius says he can't deny van Rensburg's testimony.

Nel says he has to 'create time' and building a time gap for Reeva to get to the bathroom. "That's why you've invented what you're telling us now."

Pistorius: "That's not correct, my lady."

He added that it takes time for him to put his legs on. He said that if he wanted to create time he would be able to give other reasons.

Pistorius is shown a picture of the amplifier and it has an Apple charger.

He says he can't remember if it was used on the night.

Nel says that there are lots of lights on the amplifier and questions why the LED bothered him but the others didn't. He asks if he thought about switching it off and if he tried to turn it off.

Pistorius says he doesn't know.

Nel says the blue light being on came out first in his evidence in chief. It wasn't in his bail application or his plea explanation.

This evidence was not given to van Rensburgh or van Staden (the police photographer).

Pistorius says that is correct.

Nel moves onto the blue light of the LED from the amplifier's on/off switch.

Pistorius wanted to cover the blue light with the jeans.

Nel says the blue light being on means that the amplifier is on. Pistorius says he believes the blue light can be on or off.

Nel said that the amplifier light is blue if it is on and red if it is turned off.

Nel says the only reason is "because it was never your version before cross-examination started."

Pistorius: "That's not true my lady."

Nel says he picks up that Pistorius is not sure about things

Nel asks why he is touching his eyes.

Pistorius says his eyes are sore.

Judge Masipa interjects to say that he was rubbing his eyes before.

Pistorius says he doesn't remember the duvet being on the floor.

Nel reminds him that in his version he said it was ON the bed.

Nel says it is impossible and the duvet was on the floor.

Pistorius says that there was blood on the duvet and not on the bed.

Nel "We've demonstrated that in all probability the jeans were on top of the duvet... blood spatter on the carpet and the duvet... van Rensburg was never questioned about the position of the fans.

"Don't you want to make a mistake that the duvet was on the floor?"

Pistorius says he doesn't remember it being on the floor.

Nel says that there is blood spatter on the carpet as well. Pistorius agrees.

Nel said that the blood spatter was caused when he carried Reeva past the area.

Pistorius says he went to get his phones from the left hand side of the bed so it is possible that it happened then.

Nel said that there is no blood spatter on the bed.

Nel has returned to the image of the jeans and duvet.

He asks "let's see if we can find blood spatter there?"

Pistorius agrees that it looks like blood spatter.

Here's the picture of the TV.

The red light is in the middle of the TV at the bottom.

Nel is now showing a picture of where the Sony TV is on the wall and a red light appears in the middle.

Pistorius says there is one, but that it is not very bright. He said that it was illuminating, but that it didn't bother him.
