Roux asks the court for an adjournment of two days so they can consult with a number of state witnesses.

The judge says that is "only fair".

The court is adjourned until Friday morning.

12:36 pm
Roux finishes his questioning, and Nel asks about proximity to the door when hitting it. The closure you are, the stronger the hit is, the court is told.

Nel then says: "This is the state's case."

12:28 pm
We are shown a picture of a cricket bat placed against the door.

Roux tells Vermeulen they have ballistics experts who say it is an "absolute match".

Vermeulen admits he may have forgotten to included analysis of this mark in his report.

Roux suggests he excluded it because if he was on his stumps Pistorius could not have reached the mark.

But he says: "Why would I exclude these pictures?"

12:20 pm
Roux asks the witness why there were no pictures of him testing the other marks on the door.

Vermeulen says sometimes you can "just look at" a mark to see if it could have been made by a cricket bat.

He agrees he did not take the cricket bat and try and match it with the defence's mark.
12:16 pm

Vermeulen has been called back by the defence.

He says he was asked to come back to look at a new mark in the door found by the defence.

He says he could only relate two marks on the door to the cricket bat.

7:02 am
Oscar Pistorius has now arrived in the dock.

Lawyers representing the media are also in court.

Much of the trial has been televised so far - a first for South Africa - but a witness can request not to be shown on screen.

There is said to be an application from the media to broadcast pictures of Pistorius testifying.

It's still not confirmed if Pistorius will be the first witness called by the defence team, but it has been widely expected.

Also in court this morning is the head of the South African police's psychology section, Col Gerard Labuschagne.

He will watch Pistorius closely when he gives evidence, looking at his demeanor and body language.

Labuschagne would note reactions to certain questions, how they're answered. Nel would use this when cross-examining.

Reeva's mum June Steenkamp has arrived, and is sat supported by three relatives.

The bench reserved for the two families is full, apart from a metre gap left between them.

7:20 am
For the first time since the trial started there was a queue outside the court this morning.

Carl and Aimee Pistorius have just arrived full of smiles and hugs for friends and family.

OP has just left the dock and walked near Reeva's mum before going over to huddle with his defence team.

As we explained earlier, pathologist Dr Jan Botha is up first.

This was agreed by both prosecution and defence counsel.

Everyone is in place and we're underway.

Barry Roux is speaking, outlining the evidence that the defence will examine.

He says he will call between 14 and 17 witnesses.

Dr Jan Botha, the defence pathologist, has been allowed to give evidence first.

This is unusual, however it has been agreed by both parties, because the witness needs to go first for "family health reasons".

He is now being sworn in.

Dr Botha refers to the articles referred to by prosecution Prof Saayman as "experimental".

He says he can draw no conclusions about when someone has had a last meal.

8:51 am
Dr Botha said it is "very difficult" for a pathologist to gain expertise in the field of gastric emptying.

He's building up a head of steam on this point now.

He says it's impossible to gain any conclusions, only gather facts through observation.

8:49 am
Dr Botha is referring to academic articles on gastric emptying as an indicator of time of death.

He quotes one text which describes it as "irrelevant".

Pistorius has his head in his hands, looks to be really struggling again.

8:45 am
Andy Stenning / Daily Mirror Oscar Pistorius arrives at Court for the start of his defence
Oscar Pistorius arrives at Court for the start of his defence

This was Pistorius arriving at court this morning.

8:44 am
Dr Botha is saying that gastric emptying as a science is "highly controversial".

He says results vary from person to person and from day to day.

He talks about a "landmark case" in Canada in 1963 which was very controversial and says since then there has been "less enthusiasm" for using gastric emptying as a reliable science.

8:42 am
Dr Botha is going to talk about 'gastric emptying' i.e. the amount of time food stays in a person's stomach.

The prosecution pathologist Geert Saayman said he believed Reeva Steenkamp had eaten at around three hours before she died.

Presumably, Dr Botha is going to contradict this.

8:40 am
Dr Botha says he has conducted more than 25,000 post mortem exams in his career.

Around 5-6,000 of these involved shootings.
