JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Circuit Judge Russell Healey on Friday denied a defense motion that would have kept hours of calls Michael Dunn made from jail and other evidence gathered in his murder trial from release to the media.

"This Court now orders that the witness information and jail calls be made available to the public," Healey wrote.

On pg 55 Dunn discusses Corey's office stalling on handing over the discovery and pulled a "Zimmerman" once again and sent everything in an encrypted "proprietary" format that Dunn's lawyer could not read.

Now, for the first time, Dunn has reached out exclusively to First Coast News. In a letter addressed to Anchor Heather Crawford Dunn writes, "This case has never been about loud music. This case is about a local thug threatening to kill me because I dared to ask him to turn the music down."

He also attacks State Attorney Angela Corey.

"I have quite a bit to say with regards to the way the DA's office has been mis-representing the facts. It's terrible to see such an abuse of power by a public official," wrote Dunn. http://archive.firstcoastnews.com/topst ... Coast-News

Dunn wrote, "I have been around firearms most of my life and have never had cause to draw a weapon on someone, let alone fire one at anyone. Deadly force is only to be used in circumstances of self-defense! After multiple threats of death by Jordan Davis and his brandishing of a weapon, I was convinced that my life was in danger. When Mr. Davis opened his door and said 'You're DEAD expletive! This expletive is going down NOW,' I was convinced that the loss of my life was imminent, I had no choice but to defend myself, I am NOT a murderer. I am a survivor." http://archive.firstcoastnews.com/topst ... Coast-News

The Michael Dunn Case, Thoughts, and Why I do not Discuss It
Posted on January 27, 2014

I’m breaking my embargo on the Dunn case today. Not because I want to talk about the ramifications of yet another so-called “Stand Your Ground” trial, but because of the dichotomy of the players that are involved.

And to tell you that I do not discuss this case, because I am not interested in it. If Dunn goes down, it will be because he hung himself by his own petard.
[......]

Right now, I cannot make any reasonable conclusion of the facts because we do not have all the facts. What else do I know? Michael Dunn does not understand that his views, that indicate a racial reality we all live in will translate into he is a racist per the African American community. One should choose their battles more carefully, especially when he is going on trial for Murder 1 in the most stealth racially aggrieved cities in the Country…make no mistake folks.

I agree that as yet we don't know enough of the detail...... but that has not stopped a LOT of speculation. I sense that Traybot Worriers are viewing this as a "rematch"... the GZ aquittal revisited. They are already salivating as they contemplate a guilty verdict.. and I am sure they will claim that as a "victory" for them... vindication for their vindictive and relentless stalking of GZ. They will no doubt claim that a guilty verdict in this case (by way of twisted logic) proves that GZ should also have been found guilty. :eek

My guess is that Corey sees this as a "slam dunk" guilty case... hence she is fronting up in court personally.... she wants to be the (fat) face associated with the win and score the Kudos.

I cant work up much sympathy for Dunn... I guess my interest in this case has more to do with the effect on Traybot Worriers... perhaps a bit petty, but if Dunn is seen as their enemy, then for that reason alone I would like to see him prevail.
And of course Corey failing would be a bonus :)

Dunn public record fight gets expensive
Anne Schindler, First Coast News 7:54 p.m. EST January 27, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The fight for public records in the Michael Dunn case Monday grew more heated – and possibly more expensive. Lawyers for local media including First Coast News filed an emergency motion asking the state to pay their legal fees.

At issue are hundreds of hours of jailhouse recordings made by Dunn, accused of killing 17 year old Jordan Davis in 2012 after a fight over loud music.

Local media has been asking for the recordings for months, but despite two directives from the 1st District Court of Appeals, prosecutors say it will cost over $6,000 and take several weeks to listen to and redact them. By that time, the trial may well be over.

Florida law allows lawyers to recoup fees if an agency unlawfully withheld public records. In today's filling, lawyers asserted that the motives behind State Attorney Angela Corey's "foot-dragging" were made clear in recent public comments in which she reportedly said, "the public doesn't need to know anything about a case before it goes to trial."

Corey did not respond with comment, but late today her office filed a response, defending the time and costs incurred.

Letters exchanged between accused killer, Michael Dunn and his girlfriend exposed.
Keitha Nelson, First Coast News 11:35 p.m. EST January 27, 2014

Image

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Letters exchanged between accused killer, Michael Dunn and his girlfriend could be problematic for his defense.

On February 3, the jury selection process in Michael Dunn's murder trial will begin.

Dunn's girlfriend Rhonda Rouer was with Dunn the night he allegedly shot 17-year-old Jordan Davis, at a Jacksonville gas station after an argument over loud music. Dunn says it was self-defense. But a new letter gives a look inside the mind of an accused killer.

In a letter dated December 5, 2012, Michael Dunn wrote to Rouer about her testimony to prosecutors. Saying, "I then realized that we hadn't really discussed what happened, as we were more concerned with whether or not anyone was hurt. Let me assure you, just as I told detectives who first interviewed me in Melbourne, and later Mitch Stone- there was a weapon."

"When she was first interviewed, when you would expect someone to tell the truth when their memory is freshest she never mentioned a firearm," said former prosecutor Richard Kuritz.

Kuritz says he's seen letters like this one before and believes it can be used against Dunn at trial.

"It clearly appears that Mr. Dunn is trying to refresh the recollection of his girlfriend or simply trying to tell her what she needs to say," said Kuritz.

Motion filed to sequester Michael Dunn jury
First Coast News, news source 6:18 p.m. EST January 28, 2014

A motion was filed Tuesday to sequester the jury in the Michael Dunn trial, Duval County Clerk of Court records show.

According to State Attorney's Office spokesperson Jackelyn Barnard, the motion to sequester the jury was filed by Dunn's defense.

Also on Tuesday, attorneys representing First Coast News and our news partner The Florida Times-Union were called to the Duval County Courthouse for an emergency hearing regarding the fight for access to records in the Dunn case.

Judge Russell Healey told attorneys to come back tomorrow morning for another hearing to argue why they think the public records case should remain in his court and not be moved to civil court.

Attorneys for the state and media are expected to talk by phone today to see if they can resolve the matter.

Web Extra: Interactive Map, Davis death/Dunn trial
Travis Gibson, First Coast News 12:06 p.m. EST January 30, 2014

Interactive map shows activities at key locations, from Jordan Davis' death through Michael Dunn's murder trial.

The key locations in the first-degree murder trial of Michael Dunn stretch far beyond the Southside gas station where Jordan Davis was shot and killed. The jury will likely learn about places including the hotel where Dunn went after the shooting and the high school where 17-year-old Davis attended.

You can see what happened at each of these key locations using this interactive map. Just roll over points from the suburbs of Atlanta to Satellite Beach to see features available for that location.

Look for the red marker to see where the shooting took place and hear one of the 911 calls.
