How wonderful! (Dogs and people get those fatty tumors... harmless, I have been told.) Shame LBC'S Xmas eve day was ruined! Now she won't share any fresh mice with you. :stamp

When I went to the hospital to "pick up my Lucy"... they handed me the BAG. When I got home I saw the little container with her in it. Pink. But ... I was too upset to look in the bag. Hung it on a piece of gym equipment so it would be near my bed. Lilly MUST have smelled Lucy's collar and kept getting up on her back feet to smell it. OMG.

They made a paw print of dear Lucy. :NN1 They didn't mention that nor tell me what to do with it. It almost got ruined. I couldn't go in that bag for over a month. You were supposed to just take it out of the plastic bay, lay it flat, and let it air dry. I did... eventually. I finally was able to call them and speak. It cracked up the middle... and the paw print is more shallow, BUT IT'S STILL MY LUCY. Not impressed with that hospital ... actually. Long story.

Merry Christmas to all ... and a wonderful superb 2014!! :87

My Lucy (4 lb. Chihuahua) is having a dental today (& microchip implanted while she's under). I'll be on pins & needles until it's over. She's not used to being away from home. I know she's scared.

Good luck seeing_eye and Lucy. :81

I know how it is. My cats very much NOT used to being caged and dragged to vet.. and I worry when I do have to leave them there... but that's not very often. We have done it for dental clean ups too.

Please let us know when little Lucy is ok - again. I wonder IF we could brush their teeth, we could avoid this anesthesia - which I really hate!!

I just talked with the vet. Lucy is done with the procedure and is reported to be resting comfortably. My daughter is going to pick her up after 5PM. I've never tried the tooth brushing, but I do buy a lot of Nylabones, bully sticks, and buffalo ears for them to chew on. That is supposed to help their teeth stay clean. I have no idea if that is true or not. But they like to chew on them and that's reason enough for me to buy them. According to the vet, Lucy's main problem is that her teeth are so small that it's difficult to get food, etc., out from between them. I think she'll feel better once she heals from this procedure because she had some abscesses (swellings) underneath her jaw.

GOOD. THANKS!! WHEW.
I heard you first start rubbing your clean finger in their mouth, getting them used to that feeling. THEN later, switch to a brush. AND plenty of praise after you are finished! The Vets have toothpaste for them, that they really LIKE!

Anything to avoid general anesthesia. I had a friend back home, a female Anesthesiologist and she told me "The anesthesia is the most DANGEROUS part of ANY surgery!" I never forgot that. They have trouble reviving me and I would only have surgery if life saving... maybe. She also told me, "They take you way down, and "hope" they can bring you back up again."

GREAT NEWS about your Lucy!! :26 I miss my Lucy so much I just bought a sleeping/breathing Beagle in a bed... for Lilly and me.
Even my eyes miss her ... :cry

Thanks, Joni. I understand about the anesthesia. That's why I was so worried because I know how dangerous it is. I can't help but think it may be worse for the tiny ones. I can't wait for Lucy to get home because I know she's as upset as I am at her being gone. She's not used to being away from home, and she's not used to being away from me. She's my Velcro dog ... sticks to me like glue. I believe she feels very insecure when not near me. So I'm going to be really glad to see her back home.

Lucy is home! Yay!!! She seems ok, just a little subdued. My daughter said when she got to the clinic she told them she was there to pick up Lucy. They said, "We're keeping her!" (I think they got attached to her, and I'll bet she was spoiled rotten by all the staff.) Besides the cleaning, they pulled 2 teeth and said she has 9 missing teeth! I've had Lucy since she was 3 years old and I never knew she had any missing teeth. Where could they have gone? Do they just fall out? She's now almost 11 years old.

I am going to start with Lilly and her teeth. Hmmm brushing a cat's teeth. I'll keep you posted. I will start with a clean finger, rubbing her gums, getting her used to it. Pray for me. lol

Great news Seeing_eye.

Missing teeth may well have been spat out, or expelled the other end :cool

We had a cat who adopted us... she was a stray in very poor condition, but not very old. When we took her to vet to have a bunch of stuff treated that included a dental clean up. She has MOST of her teeth missing... I think she was left with two? which also fell out soon after. She lived her life with no teeth.. apparently happy. Managed to gum her food OK... but did not have much of a bite :)

Since Lucy was about 2 1/2 to 3 years old when I got her, I wouldn't think she would have lost any teeth that young. So must have lost them since I got her. That makes me feel really bad that I never knew she was having any problem with them. Joni, I don't think I'd like to brush a cat's teeth. I've been bitten by a cat. Their teeth are really sharp .... like needles!!

When Lucy came home today I gave her some pain meds and fed her. She's been sleeping like a log ever since. I thought y'all might like to see what Lucy looks like. Here's a pic of her:

Thanks Seeing_eye... nice to see the pets in question.

Being a confirmed "Cat Person"... what can I say... she looks lovely.... for a dog :D

Don't beat yourself up over "looking after" Lucy's teeth. Pets just do get bad teeth and lose them. My cats are well looked after and healthy in every respect... but they have always lost teeth. I dare-say animals in the wild lose teeth too.. and generally don't live as long as domesticated animals.

Awww So sweet, so innocent looking. Cute little Lucy - WELCOME HOME!!! :87

I Love Lucy (and she loves me). :DN4

Yes I am afraid to go in the lions den (Lilly's mouth) but I will try. I guess gloves would ruin the effect of my finger?
She is pretty mellow (famous last words!) :94
More research needed I think.
