Love this tune! So beautiful. THIS was written by a REAL writer, Johnny Mandel, not one who uses 4 chords.
I did many tunes Shirley Horn did - loved her. Later on, Diana Krall did most of hers.
Shirley told me once she didn't like it that Diana NEVER gave her any credit for doing (stealing I guess) her entire act!

Lush Life is so elegant. Did you ever perform it? (I can picture you singing it!)

Yes... it is a very tough tune. So tough that one musician came in and heard me sing it, and brought back 4 other musicians to hear me do it. Talk about "PRESSURE" EH?

HA YES!! THE OTHER DEVINE MISS M. YOU! :86 :86

Used to do this beautiful one too... The Midnight Sun

I sounded something like June, after singing in the smoke a few years.

If life was a Smorgasbord, I was determined to get out of here with MORE than a cheese sandwich!!!
I think I have accomplished much of what I set out to do.

Late Sunday mornings, I would listen to a Political program on TV.
I REALIZED their theme song was "A Day In The Life Of A Fool"! :lol

Somebody was having such fun there!! A few of us caught it.
It has a Latin Title too which it is mainly known by.

Just one of my many laughs related to the Biz. :52

Some people from back in Philly.

Joey de. Good friend. GREAT organ player.

Pat Martino. When he was a little boy his father used to take him to any "session" he could. My teacher was really FINE!! Tall, handsome, confident and a KILLER on the guitar! Some were very jealous of him. They recorded the sessions and gave the tape to little Pat Martino's father. He copied my teacher ... verbatim!!
My teacher started working with Jimmy Smith, the great organ player. (He said he got some of his phrasing from the chickens clucking in his parents back yard.) Lived in Upper Darby. Jimmy even said to my teacher one night
"Bill, there's only ONE STAR up here, and THAT ONE IS ME!!!!" My teacher played like the WIND!!! Such improvising!!
Some of you know my teacher had an accident and cut off 2 of his finger tips, LEFT HAND which IS NEEDED to hold the strings down ... to change the pitch. :10

I didn't know that your teacher cut off 2 fingertips! How awful, especially for a musician!! :(

I can't believe this ... an old Nat King Cole standard, done by Lady GaGa! :94
Orange Colored Sky.

I LIKE Lady Gaga anyway... her pop hits.

Nice to confirm that talent doing a standard... and doing it well.

Yes R. wouldn't hurt to "cross over" so they say.

Linda R. did many standards.
Many singers did. Not a bad economic move I would say. Could be her Producers
doing that. BTW, anyone see that hysterical film ... "The Producers"?? :lol :Gslap :lol
If you haven't ... RUN!! See it - somehow! Makes your cheeks hurt!!

Lady G. really does a good job! Orange Colored Sky with a modern, young "feel". :DN4

Here is another very FINE tune that Shirley did... Named an album for this tune.
Here's To Life!
When you are in a quiet, receptive mood ... listen to this one. So beautiful ...

She was a great woman. When she had her little girl, she left the biz for 20 years, to raise her.
THEN - she went back. She should have been more known ... sad. I am sure THAT is the reason why.

I talked to her on the phone a few times. She was sad that Diana Krall did most all of her songs and never ONCE gave her credit. Selecting tunes is an important part of our "act" and success. I did many of them too, but always mentioned her name... then after me, Diana Krall started doing them.
