U.S. Special Operations forces have suffered casualties following an ambush in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan today.

There are more details, but scant around the interwebs... but the info is not consistent and so not confirmed.

One worrying claim is it was a "Green on Blue" incident... Afghan forces fired on US Special forces... accidentally? or
Intentionally?

KABUL, Afghanistan — A shootout between Afghan and American soldiers during joint operations in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday resulted in fatalities on both sides, Afghan and American officials said.

Details of the incident, in Nangarhar Province where American Special Forces were helping Afghan commandos and the Afghan Army clear an area threatened by the Taliban, were scarce. It was not clear whether the firefight was the work of Taliban infiltrators, a major concern in the past, or the result of an argument between allied forces that turned deadly.

Two Afghan officials said five or six American soldiers and six Afghan soldiers were killed. A United States military official said there were at least six American casualties and confirmed that they included fatalities but did not say how many.

Local residents reported military helicopters flying over the area.

The American military command in Afghanistan confirmed that a joint American and Afghan force had come under “direct fire” in Nangarhar without providing details.

U.S. and Afghan Special Operations Forces Killed in Deadly Ambush

Multiple U.S. and Afghan special operations soldiers have been killed Saturday in an ambush in Afghanistan's restive east.

U.S. personnel from the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group and members of the allied Afghan Special Operations Forces were conducting key leader engagement, a term that refers to efforts to engage with influential figures within the local community, in the Sherzad district of Nangarhar province when they were exposed to fire, a U.S. official told Newsweek. At least two U.S. troops were killed and six more wounded, while Afghan forces suffered nine fatalities.

The official said the attack is being classified as "green-on-blue," meaning it was perpetrated by a member or members of the partnered Afghan security forces against U.S. troops.

"A combined U.S. and Afghan force conducting an operation in Nangarhar Province was engaged by direct fire on Feb. 8. We are assessing the situation and will provide further updates as they become available," U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesperson Colonel Sonny Leggett said in a statement sent to Newsweek.
