DAY 2 - 2nd Test

It makes a change to see a "proper" Test innings.... Australia still batting (strongly) on the second day.

Australia 425/5 * (98.5 ov) (RR 4.3)

However.... the way test matches seem to go these days... either it rains and/or one (or more teams) have something of a "batting collapse" It remains to be seen if Sri Lanka also bat well when they get a turn? And... unfortunately if Sri Lanka also score well (and long) then a DRAW will be likely... with the two first innings taking up close to 4 days?? We'll see :roll

ETA RAIN a strong possibility Mon/Tues. :doh
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/act/act/canberra

Seems Australia grasp the point I am making (that rarely happens) :cool
They have declared... mid way through day 2 second session... that is what I would have recommended to move the game along.
Australia 534/5d (132 Overs, RR: 4.04) (44 overs remaining today)

IF Australia can take a few wickets today... they are in with a chance of a win. Otherwise.... if Sri Lanka can bat today (and well into tomorrow) and at least get close to the Australian total.... the game is likely to end in a draw. (especially if rain causes some lost time).

DAY 3 - 2nd Test
Australia 534/5d
Sri Lanka 123/3 * (43 ov)
Sri Lanka trail by 411 runs with 7 wickets remaining in the innings

Sri Lanka need to at least hang in and not lose quick wickets today. They are 3 down (and one retired injured). Surviving most of today would be a good target. Runs are a secondary consideration at this stage, but of course Sri Lanka need to decrease the 1st innings deficit.

Losing 4 more wickets (and another retired hurt) before lunch did not help the Sri Lankan cause :doh
Lunch
Australia 534/5d
Sri Lanka 215/7 * (67.1 ov)
Day 3: Sri Lanka trail by 319 runs with 3 wickets remaining in the innings

Sri Lanka 215 all out (68.3 Overs, RR: 3.13) (MDKJ Perera retired hurt did not return)

Innings Break
Australia lead by 319 (62 overs scheduled remaining today)

Tea
Australia 534/5d & 67/3 * (23 ov)
Sri Lanka 215
Day 3: Australia lead by 386 runs with 7 wickets remaining

Innings Break (Australia declare 2nd innings) (15 overs remaining today)
Australia 534/5d & 196/3d * (47 ov)
Sri Lanka 215
Day 3: Australia lead by 515 runs with 7 wickets remaining

So... 2nd Innings Target for Sri Lanka to win is 516
Sri Lankan target to SAVE the game is bat today, and next 2 days.

Target for Australia... 10 wickets

STUMPS DAY 3
Play ending today (bad light) (and some spots of rain... hope for Sri Lanka)
Australia 534/5d & 196/3d
Sri Lanka 215 & 17/0 * (6 ov, target 516)
Sri Lanka require another 499 runs with 10 wickets remaining

DAY 4 - 2nd Test
Australia 534/5d & 196/3d
Sri Lanka 215 & 17/0 * (6 ov, target 516)
Sri Lanka require another 499 runs with 10 wickets remaining

This COULD develop into an exciting test match... like the "good old days" :roll

Sri Lanka do have the chance to score 500 runs and win, but more likely they could simply survive for a draw. A big ask to bat 2 days on a wearing pitch... but possible. Not every batsman needs to bat long... perhaps just one partnership? The sort of long (safe) innings that happened in days gone by :)
Session by session... Sri Lanka need to retain wickets... none down or perhaps lose just one. Survive 3 sessions today... then 3 tomorrow.
(Some time off with rain would help thr Sri Lankan cause)

On the other hand... Sri Lankan batsmen could drop like flies in a batting "collapse" with the Test over today. (just 4 days) That seems to be the norm these days :doh

Australia are continuing with "the short stuff", which I accept is part of the game... aggressive FAST bowlers intimidating batsmen... but too much of it does seem to me to be "not cricket". Given Australia's obsession with the historic "Body Line" tour by England (1932–33 Ashes tour of Australia).... still decried to this day... with rule changes to stop bowlers attacking (and injuring) batsmen... it seems a bit rich for Australian bowlers to be assaulting batsmen as a deliberate tactic??

RESULT
Australia 534/5d & 196/3d
Sri Lanka 215 & 149 (51 ov, target 516)

Australia won by 366 runs

2-Game Test Series Australia 2 V Sri Lanka 0
