No declaration...

As Hillary says.. at this stage what difference does it make?

There is NO POINT in NZ wasting time now...either piss or get off the pot :cool

-----------------------
England look to be intentionally wasting time... already conscious of saving the game.
As I said... the longer NZ bat the more they are using up valuable time :doh

-----------------
By batting on after tea, and presumably declaring mid-session... NZ have already conceded 2 (or 3) overs which will be deducted for an Innings Break.

-----------------
My point about England wasting time...
As I said before.... at this stage the BEST England can do is save the game... batting and not losing all 10 wickets.
NZ COULD have declared some time ago.. or at least at tea... to give themselves 2 sessions plus 3 sessions tomorrow to bowl England out. These overs now are all part of using up time.. which is what England have to do.
Commentators are referring back to a previous game.. where NZ had 143 overs to bowl England out.. and they FAILED. England survived to the last ball with 9 wickets down.

I don't get it (not having a good mental day) but what is the advantage of England wasting time, now?

THX :)

eta: Thanks so much for explaining. Although you may have said it before, it just didn't stay with me.
Makes sense now. ;)

eta2: After reading at espncric page, looks to me like NZ let play go on until Nicholls passed his high score record.

New Zealand Declares - Innings Break

England 58
New Zealand 427/8d * (141 ov)

New Zealand lead by 369 runs with 2 wickets remaining in the innings

A possible 148 overs left in the game

-------------------
Nah on Nicholls... Highest 1st class cricket score unlikely a consideration on team declaration.
IF Williamson was taking personal milestones into consideration... he would have let Nicholls get to 150 :)
The Boofheads were predicting a declaration half way through this session. It came at the drinks break.

---------------
Commentary mentioned in passing that "Mark Richardson's wife phoned him"
A HUGE shock to me that he has a wife :eek

You're right I bet, I didn't even think of THAT. :roll

ETA: Since England has started their second innings later than you thought, and how they have played so far, pitch conditions, etc., would love to hear how you think this is going to playout from here, even through 5th day. Possibilities. When you have time. ;)

My thoughts on how the game plays out have not changed. :)

NZ have to bowl England out to win.

England have to survive the number of overs remaining (148) to save the game (get a draw).

I understand what people were saying about NZ wanting to be bowling at England at night with a newish ball, but I am NOT convinced that the "night" has a huge effect. My idea was for NZ to a) bat with a bit more aggression on day 1 (score runs faster) and b) declare sooner. England unlikely to "collapse" twice.. and are world class side so NZ need as much time as possible to bowl them out.. especially if they are "playing safe" (defensive).

Day 5 - 1st Test - New Zealand v England

Livescorecard
http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/1088 ... z-2017-18/

This COULD be an entertaining day's play (or not). At least the weather looks good (so far)

There is a chance that England can play "a proper test innings" and save the game... at least survive all day for an exciting finish with either side in with a chance up to the last few overs.

Of course England can not "win"... but they can save the game with a draw... so a draw might be considered as an England victory.

Test cricket includes the need at times to bat out time. It is a skill in itself. A skill not seen so much these days. Test cricket players have benefited from batting (and bowling) skills developed and brought across from "Limited overs cricket", but there has (perhaps) been a downside with some test skills lost, or at least not utilized as they once were? Overall it's probably been a plus for Test cricket... I do remember some long drawn out(boring) bits of Test cricket, but at times a battle between bat and ball, with few runs or wickets can be an enthralling thing to watch. :)
Who knows what we will get today? Sadly it may well be England wickets falling early.. a collapse and game over very early, but lets hope it at least lasts most of the day(and night)

England don't NEED to score runs at all. Of course pre-meditated leaving/blocking every ball contrary to normal style of play can lead to a batsman's demise, so to some extent they do need to "play a normal game", but there is little point in risky singles (risking a run-out) or swashbuckling big hits.. risking being caught. It is true that the batting side need to "rotate the strike" rather than allow bowlers to work them over for 6 balls, and so "safe" singles are desirable for that reason as opposed to increasing the score, and "safe" boundaries scored against a bowler also "put him off his stride... again desirable for that reason as opposed to increasing the score.

Having said all that... It is VERY unlikely (in 98 overs), but IF England can wipe off the deficit and even get a small lead, it means NZ have to bat again. Game drawn for sure!
This is NOT likely. England would need to adopt a different (aggressive) style of play from the outset. Score at 3 -4 per over, and still not lose wickets.

-------------------------
IMO England might well view their task session by session. NZ need 2 wickets per session, so England can view surviving each session without losing a wicket as a victory.
And breaking that down further... England need to bat each hour without losing a wicket.

-------------------------
Wagner's bowling RUBBISH! :)
England have to hold out.. less than an hour. New ball due in 10 overs... bowling now is just going thru the motions, NZ will be hoping for great things as soon as they take the new ball, just before tea. If England survive that they will go to tea satisfied :)
#BarmyArmy

-------------------------
Bairstow out... what was he thinking :doh
England just had to survive a few over to the new ball.

England 58 & 181/5 * (72.4 ov)

-------------------------
2nd New Ball taken

Image

England 58 & 204/5 * (80 ov)
New Zealand 427/8d

Day 5 - Session 1: England trail by 165 runs with 5 wickets remaining
------------------------
LIGHT RAIN... West Auckland... just sayin' :cool

------------------------
Ali OUT... tea taken :doh

There is NZ's two wickets this session.
England needs to hang in there for 30 more minutes.

Again, likin' your commentary, Rumpole. Great stuff that makes sense to me.

Native American - Music- (Rain dance)

-------------
Out West.. light "drizzle" is now RAIN!! :)

And "rain fade" on Sky TV signal :87

Might hit Eden Park in 10 minutes :roll

------------------
It's a LONG loss of Sky signal...still no signal..... torrential rain here :)

Signal back... but rain continues....

Hang in there you English... HELP is on the way!!

---------------------------
Bumble is opining about "the good old days of Test Cricket" when they bowled 18 overs/hour
That's 108 overs in a day... and our modern blokes can't manage 90 :wall

And he even mentioned tales of 22 overs an hour ====> 132 in a day :roll

Back in those days you had to ASK umpire if you could have a drink... and they often said "NO! Get on with the game" :)

---------------
NZ have convinced the Umpires to change the ball (out of shape) :roll

---------------------
Still waiting...
Image

West Auckland weather would put a stop to this game.

---------------------------
They showed the "storm" out West when I was posting about it. It doesn't look to have got any closer.... Shame!

I don't want NZ to win. IMO they should have got on with their batting quicker... declared sooner....besides they are Obama fans!!
They DESERVE to miss out due to rain :roll

---------------------------
"The Obama thing" is important. :stamp

It is COMMON for people to voice negatives about Trump.. negatives about USA as well. They dont KNOW shit ... but they parrot left talking points... and people generally believe it all.

-------------------------------
The poms are getting TOO FRISKY. Big hits.
They should remember RUNS DONT MATTER. At the moment they just need to survive 20 minutes to WIN this session.
NZ will be disheartened.. and with one session to go....and 4 wickets in hand... England are in with a chance.
Rain would be a bonus :)

-----------------------
The rain before was torrential for about half an hour (or more).. then drizzle for an hour. Stopped now.

--------------------------
WHAT A DAFT ASS STOKES IS... OUT just on Dinner break! :wall

Quote:
Stephen Kissoon: "Brain fart from Stokes! Even when trying to save a game England can't get their shot selection right. On the stroke of the interval too. Just terrible."

They just showed the sky and the storm coming.
I'm not listening to commentators so I don't know how far away it is, but it's coming!!!

Those were the most beautiful clouds next to it that I have ever seen (where the sun was shining).
I am guessing a NZ sunset. The colors looked almost fake.

I'm wanting NZ to win, not a draw. New Zealand played better, obviously.
-----------
You keep pushing it ... ;)
The Obama thing is a silly reason to want your country's team to lose.
It was probably the owner or higher up (possibly that new PM) who initiated the invite.
I'm gonna tell Kelly Jones and he is going to be very disappointed in you, Rumpole. :)
-----------
How long did it rain at your house? Is it still raining? :roll
-----------
Thinking if the rain comes and goes during dinner, England may possibly win legitimately... or come close.
Now that would be exciting.

Thanks for wx report. :)
-----------
Just as Ali did (OUT) before Tea Break.
