A lot of discussion about NZ selecting 2 spinners and dropping Southee for this test.

I agree... it is nuts!!

As I have often opined... for years NZ has struggled (and failed) to find a world class "Bowling attack"... at least two fast bowlers as front-line attack and two more first change bowlers who can at least restrict runs.

The pair of Southee and Bolt are NOT quite scary enough.. but best we have found for some time. To not select one of them (not due to injury) is nuts!! Even with that pair the bowling attack" is weak by world standards. On most pitches.. one GOOD spinner is required... and NZ struggles there as well. Vettori was OK (but a bit over-rated IMO). Santner is barely OK... as is Jeetan Patel.. having both of them does not help much.

Turning pitches and spin are a feature in India, but not so much in the rest of the cricket world. There is of course a place for good spin bowling, but in a Test match one does not expect spin as part of the opening attack. It should come into it's own as the pitch deteriorates (days 4 and 5).

Very informative, thanks.

And with that (what you) said, this is going to be grueling to watch if NZ doesn't get a few wickets early. Like NOW. :stamp

I said I wasn't going to watch until NZ batted, but can't help it. ;)

The good news is... around 300 is enough to be a "respectable" 1st innings score and getting the innings done by half way through day 2 augers well for there being enough time to play out all 4 innings (if required).... always keeping fingers crossed for no rain!
