Bashara's honesty questioned
George Hunter, The Detroit News 2:51 p.m. EST November 13, 2015

Bob Bashara tripped when he walked onto the witness stand Friday -- and then was tripped up by what prosecutors said were his rampant lies.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey fired away at inconsistencies in statements Bashara has made since his wife, Jane, was found dead in her SUV on Jan. 24, 2012.

Bashara, who was sentenced to life in prison in December, after he was found guilty of orchestrating his wife's murder, is seeking a new trial. He stumbled as he walked onto the witness stand Friday, the seventh day of the hearing.

Friday marked Bashara’s fourth day on the witness stand in the hearing, now in its seventh day. He is scheduled to return to court Dec. 3, after Evans allowed his attorneys time to review transcripts of earlier testimony.

The continuing hearing for Bob Bashara’s new-trial request scheduled for today [Thursday] was adjourned until February in Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit.

Bashara, who turns 58 on Dec. 12, was supposed to testify for the fifth day on the eighth day of his hearing for a new trial following his first-degree murder conviction for killing his wife, Jane, in January 2012 in the garage of their Grosse Pointe Park home.

The hearing will continue Feb. 11 in front of Judge Vonda Evans, according to court records.

Joe Gentz, in his own words, is changing his story again about how he was involved in Jane Bashara's murder.

A sworn affidavit was filed last week. In it, Gentz said the former police chief of Grosse Pointe Park, David Hiller, and the detective who investigated the murder when it happened in January of 2012 allegedly told him to lie. Gentz claims they coached him on what to say when he told them, "I alone did it."

In the affidavit Gentz writes: "That my testimonial statements against Mr. Robert Bashara was the product of coercion and subornation of perjury by Sgt. Reducio and Chief David Hiller."

Gentz said he killed Jane and Bob Bashara was not home at the time of the murder. Here's more of what Gentz wrote in the affidavit (view the affidavit file here):

Could Gentz's new story get Bashara a new trial?

Very interesting supplement to motion and affidavit. :roll

IF Bashara is granted a new trial, it needs to be before a different judge than Vonda Evans, IMO.

I think I read (during the recent hearings that were streamed) that she stated in open "I'm not gonna retry this case." I could be wrong but remember something about a statement she made, "under her breath" which was recorded.

This is the most recent information I can find on Bob Bashara. A cancelled hearing. :roll

UPDATED: FEB 02 2016 01:22PM EST

(WJBK) - UPDATE: The hearing has been canceled for the day.

The Bob Bashara case could have new developments as it returns to court Tuesday. We're told Judge Vonda Evans will hear a motion to unseal the Bashara court file. It's been under seal since the case began in 2012.

DETROIT (WJBK) - Bob Bashara was back in court Tuesday morning fighting for a new trial.

The hearing wrapped up just before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

His handyman, Joe Gentz, admitted to killing Jane and told police that Bashara paid him to do it -- but Gentz recently said in a sworn affidavit that his statements against Bashara were "the product of coercion" by police.

Gentz was going to testify today of all of that, but Judge Vonda Evans wasn't ready to proceed. His testimony could land him a perjury charge and possibly a first-degree murder charge, so Judge Evans wanted to make sure Gentz fully understood the decision before proceeding.

He's due back in court on the 21st.

Gentz to appear in court today as Bob Bashara continues fight for new trial

Convicted murderer Bob Bashara is expected to be back in court today.

His appearance is part of his motion for a new trial.

Despite his presence, the spotlight will really be on handyman Joe Gentz today when the hearing begins.

During the hearing, Gentz is supposed to decide before the court whether he'll change his testimony to match a recently filed affidavit claiming he acted alone in the 2012 murder of Jane Bashara.

Up until now, Gentz claimed Jane's husband bob forced him to do it. He said he had killed Jane because he was threatened by and paid by Bob.

Then in the affidavit, he changed his story, saying police coerced him into framing Bashara.

On Tuesday, Judge Vonda Evans heard an emergency motion that was filed in the case.

This morning it's not clear if that will have any impact on the hearing that continues today.

If Gentz decides to change his testimony, he could face first degree murder and life in prison rather than the 28 years he's doing now.

I've read on twitter that "the hearing was worth watching" (video posted above). At the end, Judge Vonda Evans says "Get him out of here - bye." The motion for new trial hearing is continued on May 10.

The Associated Press | April 21, 2016

DETROIT (AP) — A handyman imprisoned for the slaying of a suburban Detroit woman described in court how her husband pulled a gun and threatened him if he didn't kill her.

Joe Gentz testified Thursday in Wayne County Circuit Court that he broke Jane Bashara's neck in the garage of the couple's Grosse Pointe Park home. He said Bob Bashara had promised to give him cash and a Cadillac.

Prosecutors have said Bob Bashara coerced Gentz into strangling Jane Bashara.

Gentz is in prison for second-degree murder. The 57-year-old Bob Bashara was sentenced to life in prison after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder in the 2012 death of his wife.
