Toss, 10.50 am MS Dhoni has won the toss and India will bat first on an overcast morning at the WACA. Dhoni says he is happy with the weather because it has been quite hot in Perth in the lead up to the game. Smith said he was thinking about bowling first anyway, and hopes to make use of the overcast conditions.

India Bat First

I have no idea of details of the WACA pitch.. but these days I think an ODI requires a score of 250 minimum... and in most cases.. 300+

And....

.. they need to get on with it from the outset. A player CAN NOT waste balls faced and then go out.... at the very least even if they score few runs they need to contribute with a SR close to 100% If they are not scoring at about a run per ball... better if the do go out!!

IF a batsman does get bogged down, then the onus is on him to fix it quickly.. make up the shortfall in runs himself and NOT leave it to his team mate after he goes out. :)

India lose 1st wicket

They were doing good overall... maintaining RR (India RR 5.28) within striking distance of 6 runs per over.. but......

The player who just went out was NOT pulling his weight :roll

S Dhawan c Marsh b Hazlewood 9 (22b 1x4 0x6) SR: 40.90

To my way of thinking.. this guy wasted a dozen balls faced.. and so his team mates have to now make that up.. as well as score "their own" 6 runs per over.

It has started? It's 10:36PM here, Time Lord ;)

Glad I checked in early ... but it's not like there's 7 more hours to watch.

Commentators are praising this start by India...

India 104/1 (22.3 ov)

However I am a HARDER task-master :cool

They have done OK (ish) and certainly losing only one wicket is a plus.. but... I think they are a little "bogged down" That is.... a few runs short of where they need to be, to post a really good total. 300+ is NOT super great these days.. up to 400 is not unknown.. and 350 might be the score they should be looking for?

Having said that.... then Kohli and Sharma are established now... they just need to up the pace and hit a few boundaries.

Cricket is a funny old game

A few quick wickets could stuff India up, they could be held to a much lower total.

All the more reason to "Piss or get off the pot"

Well, you called it, Rumpole!

Thanks for the math, I always like a target (you predict) to watch. :)

Aus is so good, I want Ind to do well enough to make it a challenge, of course.

The old "Double the score at 30 over mark" trick would suggest that India should score around 300

India
149/1 (30 ov)

I still think they NEED to do better than that... 320 - 350 would be a good score

India 216/1 as last 10 overs start...

ANOTHER old adage is teams might well score 10 per over for last 10 (if they have wickets in hand).. so... India should go for that... take score to 316.

Why the fielding changes at 40/ov?

Don't quite understand the reason(s). You can tell me at break. Normally I'd look on Wiki but don't want to miss these last overs. ;)

Thx.

Fielding restrictions have always been part of ODI ( and T20).... they have tried various systems..

Basically want to control/eliminate just setting a negative field and bowling line

5 allowed outside the 15 M circle at end.. does restrict the straight out bash almost anywhere for a boundary.. but few fielders in close so a single available off most balls.

For example for some T20 overs.. only 2 allowed outside 15M... to encourage exciting 6's (and 4's)

See the Q&A thread for more :cool

India unlikely to score 10 off some overs.. so they need a few BIG overs to get the average up to 10 for last 10 overs.

Thanks for explaining, Rumpole! :)

Faulkner is worn out, he shows it walking back to bowl.

This has been a fun India innings to watch. Have learned mucho.

I would have liked to watch Dhoni a bit longer. He's built like a fire hydrant, as we say.

Innings Break

India 309/3 (50 overs)

Target for Australia 310

Good...but NOT enough IMO

I think Australia should do that OK.. but... cricket is a funny old game.... the key for India is EARLY WICKETS

274 is RECORD second innings to WIN an ODI at the WACA... Aust need to far surpass that....

Aust can do it :cool

IMO they need to NOT shag spiders, but get on with it from the outset. :roll

10 per over in first 10 to 15 overs would be my plan A :cool

Certainly I would like to see 100+ runs in first 15 ( and 1 or none wickets down)

On the other hand... if India can bag 3 wickets in 1st 15 overs... then they could well win :)

After seeing that player yell at Warner as he was walking off, I really want to see Aus come back and win! :stamp

Optimistic me thinks they can. :)
_______________

Maybe not. :roll

I was hoping Smith/Bailey partnership would kick off, after Warner's wicket.
