A special election for Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district will be held on March 13, 2018, following the resignation of Representative Tim Murphy.

Murphy, who held the seat since 2002, declared his intent to resign on October 5, 2017, and vacated his seat on October 21 that year. This will be the last election for Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district held under the Congressional Redistricting Act of 2011.

Background
Incumbent U.S. Representative Tim Murphy was involved in a sex scandal consisting of his allegedly having extramarital sexual relations with a woman and then asking her to have an abortion. This was particularly damaging because Murphy identifies as a pro-life politician. Murphy subsequently announced that he was resigning and that he would leave office on October 21.

Primary elections were not held in the race. Instead, nominees were chosen by each party. The Republican Party held a special convention on November 11, 2017, to choose a nominee through a conferee process involving 215 local Republican activists. The Democratic Party held their nominating convention on November 19, 2017. The Libertarian Party of Allegheny County and the Libertarian Party of Washington County nominated a candidate via party caucus.

Pennsylvania's 18th Congressional District is located in Western Pennsylvania and borders the states of Ohio and West Virginia. It includes portions of Greene, Washington, Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. The district has a Cook PVI score of R+11.

Debbie Lesko (R) on Tuesday won the GOP nomination to replace Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) who resigned in December 2017, over sexual misconduct accusations. She will face off against physician Hiral Tipirneni (who won the Democratic primary) in the April 24 general election. Kentucky Republican Robert Goforth defeated Democrat Kelly Smith on Tuesday in a special election. Goforth, a pharmacist, faces Keith Hays, a high school principal, in the Republican Primary, May 22. Goforth will replace former GOP Rep. Marie Rader, who resigned in December because of health reasons (for the remainder of Rader's term). --------- Last Tuesday in a special election, Democrat Linda Belcher defeated Republican Rebecca Johnson by winning 68 percent of the vote. Belcher will replace former GOP Rep. Dan Johnson (Rebecca's husband), who killed himself last year after facing sexual assault allegations. New Hampshire Democrat Philip Spagnuolo, a licensed recovery coach, has edged out his Republican challenger, Les Cartier, in today’s race to represent New Hampshire’s House of Representatives, District Belknap 3, flipping the Republican seat to Democratic control 54 percent to 46 percent, an 8 percent margin. The special election was called after the death of incumbent Donald Flanders, a Republican. Connecticut Democrat Philip Young, a former town councilman and executive chef, has edged out his Republican challenger, Bill Cabral, in today’s race to represent Connecticut’s House of Representatives, district 120, flipping the Republican seat to Democratic control by a two percent margin. The seat was formerly filled by Laura Hoydick, who left office to become mayor of Stratford. --------------------------------------------------- FWIW - Early voting began Monday in Texas for Dem & Rep Primaries. Yesterday, President Trump tweeted support for all the Texas Republican incumbents, including Ted Cruz. Texas Primary is next Tuesday, March 6.

Texas Primaries, March 6, 2018 All I read about for the past week, was how the Dems were outnumbering Reps in early voting, predicting the Blue Wave was going to turn Texas blue. The Texas Primaries yesterday turned out good except for a DA position. One of George Soros' PACs, poured in almost $1 million ($895k) to help Joe Gonzales defeat the incumbent for district attorney in Bexar County. Bexar County, which includes the city of San Antonio, is one of the most populous counties in the United States. Soros operates in the same manner in almost every city that he enters: He will set up a super PAC, deposit funds well above what others would raise for a district attorney's race, back his candidate, refund himself any excess money at the conclusion of an election, and then dissolve the PAC. Meanwhile, 1.5 million Republicans and 1 million Democrats voted. All the hype about early voting numbers was fake news.

All of Allegheny will be blue (mostly). So I think Lamb will show ahead to close to the end. IMO, it is going to depend on how many showed up to vote in ALL the rural (Amish) areas around the state that are red.

It saddens me to see that this race is so close. Hard to see why anybody with half a brain would vote Democrat... the way they are nowadays.... but it seems close to half of the US voting public are ok with Dims and/or woefully uninformed... SAD! There MIGHT be some sense in a district voting for "best guy" regardless of party... to work on their behalf, BUT>>>> People should KNOW that in Washington "The party rules".. at least for the Dims. By picking a Dim candidate they send an ally to Nancy Pelosi.. and her agenda. The Dims are the party of no steel/no coal... a daft choice for the people of PA

Conor Lamb leads by 0.3 percentage points, or 579 votes, over Rick Saccone with 100 percent of precincts fully reporting. Conor Lamb Democrat 113,111 49.8% Rick Saccone Republican 112,532 49.6% Drew Miller Libertarian 1,372 0.6% 227,015 votes, 100% reporting (593 of 593 precincts) ----------------- This is how a Libertarian opponent can ruin an election when HE knows good and well he can't win. He'll just take his contributions and walk away richer. There is some kind of law where they can't use the money for certain things (written after Rev. Al filled his pockets after an election) but MOST of these candidates have a work-around. There are so many loopholes to use. What a shame for Rick Saccone. I hope he files for a recount.

March 14, 2018 The Democrat and Republican in a special House election in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Trump country were divided by a few hundred votes in a race that was too close to call early Wednesday — an ominous sign for Republicans in a district that Donald J. Trump won by nearly 20 percentage points. Although most ballots have been counted, official results may not be announced until next week at the earliest because a small number of absentee, provisional and overseas ballots remain uncounted. Officials have until Tuesday to review and count eligible provisional ballots, and ballots cast by citizens and military personnel living overseas must arrive by that date as well. No automatic recount will occur, but voters have five days after results are announced to file a petition to begin a recount. Romney came SECOND in Utah Primary Convention Mike Kennedy 50.88% Mitt Romney 49.12%. There will now be a republican primary runoff in June

Not too much in the primary elections tonight. No special elections that I can find. Can't read The New York Times election results without paying (no more free pages for me). Idaho and Oregon results will be in late. Mostly the news is reporting who won in the Republican or Democrat races that will go up against the (uncontested) incumbent, either R or D.

I haven't seen much to report on..... as results are mainly party run-offs. In Texas, Lupe Valdez, a former Dallas County Sheriff, won the Democrat seat (close race) and will run against Gov. Greg Abbott in November. She is the LAST person we need as Governor. The news stations are already touting her qualifications as being "openly gay and Hispanic". In Arkansas, State legislator Clarke Tucker wins Democratic primary for a US House seat in Little Rock and central Arkansas, advancing to face Republican Rep. French Hill in a district national Democrats believe they can flip. In Georgia, Stacey Abrams wins Georgia's Democratic primary in the gubernatorial race, becoming the state's first woman nominee for governor from either major party - and she'd be the first black woman governor in the U.S. And in Kentucky, Amy McGrath, once a Marine fighter pilot, stunned the establishment favorite to win the Democratic primary in Kentucky's 6th District. Another sign of strength for women candidates. (She knocked off the current Mayor.)

VERY interesting. I tend to believe the percentage is higher but will take what they say. I'm still laughing at the Democratic Party (not very well spoken) spokesperson on Tucker the other night.... saying one of the platforms for the Dems is more jobs. Yeah, for lawyers.
