Court resumes and the judge says she is going to stand the matter down to let the defence look at the video.

She said that both counsels have a point.

The court adjourns again so that the defence can make further submissions if it wishes.

Roux is back on his feet reading a letter written before the case came to court saying there must be a fair trial.

He said that "any attempt to ambush our client is not constitutional".

He said Pistorius hasn't seen the video, but the defence team has. He says it should not be used as evidence but as cross-examination.

So the court has adjourned for a short time so that Pistorius can compose himself.

He is now sobbing in the dock after the graphic image was shown on screens in the court that were broadcast.

The image is extremely distressing for anyone who saw it.

Alex Crawford from Sky News said that most poeople in the courtroom "appear shocked at this aggressive start by Gerrie Nel".

The judge asks for the picture to be removed from the screen and Nel gives Pistorius time to compose himself.

He has his head in his hands and he is rocking back and forth as he sobs.

Nel says he can see that Pistorius is distressed and asks for an adjournment.

Nel: "You saw how the bullet made the watermelon explode. You know that the same thing happened to Reeva's head."

The court is shown a graphic image of Reeva's head. The court gasps and Reeva's mother looks down.

Pistorius refuses to look.

He says: "I remember I don't have to look at a picture, I was there." He says he held her head at the time.

He says he cannot recall the term zombie stopper.

He said it wasn't him laughing in the background but acknowledges it was his voice.

"It makes me very upset hearing me something like that."

He said he didn't compare it to shooting a human but Nel points out that he said "It's softer than brains".

He has now left the court with his psychologist.

A member of the prosecution is explaining to the Steenkamp family why they showed the video.

He told them that it was to make the world and Pistorius face what he had done.

A psychologist sat with Pistorius talking to him during the adjournment while stroking his sister Aimee's arm.

Meanwhile Reeva Steenkamp's cousin broke down at the sight of the image of Reeva's head with terrible injuries.

The trial has resumed once again as the judge arrives back in court.

Nel goes back to the video saying that Pistorius was at the range with Francois Hougaard.

He asks what the purpose of the exercise was and why they had cameras.

He said someone suggested they shoot a watermelon because of the calibre of the gun.

June Steenkamp told reporters she understands the reason why the picture of her daughter's head wounds were shown in court.

Nel asks if he took into account other events.

Pistorius said he gave his version at his bail hearing and that has never changed.

Pistorius agrees so Nel wants to "narrow it down".

He asks if there is any reconstruction from the moment he went to sleep to the time he killed Reeva.

Pistorius says there wasn't any reconstruction, but there might be after the event because he doesn't recall making phone calls or other parts of what he did after the shooting.

He says he has been telling the truth. Some of the points, he says, would be a reconstruction because he can't say what other people were doing and some from the record of events.

Pistorius says it would not be true to say that he went out onto the balcony when he heard the noise.

Pistorius insists that his bail application and evidence were both the truth.

Nel asks him if he puts the fans onto the balcony or just in the door with one leg on the balcony.

Pistorius said that they are different - one a tripod that is waist height and it had one leg on the balcony.

The floor fan was between the two legs, more inside the bedroom than outside.

Pistorius confirms that he didn't go out onto the balcony to retrieve them.

Pistorius says that when he was at the Brooklyn police station he was "very emotional" when he was shown his bail version.

Nel is working to show the difference between what he said at the time and his testimony but Pistoirus continues to say that his version hasn't changed.

He asks what he said that counsel did not put in on his behalf.

Pistorius said that it didn't include certain things including speaking to Reeva when he sat up in bed and calling Mr Baba.

He was told that he could not give evidence at the bail hearing. "Nothing has changed, the state's case has changed many times" but he says his evidence has not changed at all.

In his bail affidavit Pistorius said: "I woke up, went onto the balcony to bring the fan in, I closed the sliding doors and the curtains and heard a noise"

Pistorius says he didn't go onto the balcony - he brought the fan in that was on the balcony.
