JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jury selection in the Michael Dunn trial begins Monday. Dunn’s attorneys have asked the jury in the case to be sequestered, mainly because of the extensive pretrial publicity.

One local attorney told Action News decisions on the issue usually center on one key question.

“Now the jury’s picked and they go out into the community and live their daily lives, will they be influenced,” said Dale Carson, a criminal defense attorney. “And in my view, as a defense attorney, there’s a very strong likelihood of that.”

Dunn is accused of shooting and killing teenager Jordan Davis. The case has garnered worldwide attention. In other recent high-profile cases in Florida, jury sequestration has been an expensive proposition.

It cost $33,000 to sequester the jury during the George Zimmerman trial. The costs in the longer Casey Anthony trial reached more than $230,000. But Carson said cost isn’t the most important factor in the judge’s decision.

On Friday a three judge panel with the appellate court unanimously ruled that Judge Russell Healey was wrong to say he lacked jurisdiction to rule in a dispute on phone calls Dunn has made from jail. The dispute is occurring between the office of State Attorney Angela Corey and three media organizations.

The Times-Union, First Coast News and WJXT TV-4 have all requested about 185 hours of phone calls Dunn made from jail. Dunn, 47, killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis in a dispute over loud music, telling police he felt threatened and thought he saw a gun.

The case has generated national attention because Dunn is white and Davis was black. Jury selection in the case is scheduled to begin on Monday.

The media organizations requested the phone calls and Healey ruled that they are public record and should be released. But Corey said she would not release the calls until her staff spends about 180 hours redacting them and media organizations pay $6,000 for their time. That is expected to take nine to 10 weeks, according to Corey.

Attorneys for the media went back to Healey and asked him to order the release of the phone calls immediately and to find the $6,000 excessive. Healey declined to rule, saying that the media needs to sue Corey in civil court.

But the appellate court said Healey was wrong to do that, and he should be the one to make the decision. It ordered him to hold an evidentiary hearing and rule on the merits of the media motions.

But the appellate court also acknowledged that with the trial beginning Monday that would be difficult. It recommended that Chief Judge Donald Moran consider appointing another judge, a magistrate or a special master to consider the issue as soon as possible.

Corey at it again... as a repeat offender I think it's past time she suffered some sort of penalty :59

Rather than sequester Juries... how about sequester Corey and her ilk during the lead up to a trial.. and during the trial itself.

If the prosecution were not out there with a False Narrative, egging on the lynch mob... the need for Jury sequestration would be lessened.

Lottery begins for Michael Dunn trial
Jacob Long, First Coast News 9:05 a.m. EST January 31, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A public lottery for the upcoming Michael Dunn murder trial began at 6 a.m. Friday.

Dunn is accused of fatally shooting Jordan Davis, 17, in late November 2012 after a dispute over loud music at a gas station.

The trial is expected to garner extensive local and national media attention. So far, 20 news outlets and 170 journalists have sought access to covering the legal proceedings.

As such, space in the assigned courtroom at the Duval County Courthouse is going to be limited. Supporters of Dunn and Davis are also expected to turn out.

So, members of the public wanting to attend the trial must enter a lottery the day before they wish to be in court. They must re-enter every time they wish to attend again.

Applications should be taken to the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center in downtown Jacksonville between 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Artwork dedicated to Jordan Davis removed from outside family's lawyer's office
By Andrew Pantazi Fri, Jan 31, 2014 7:22 pm | updated Sat, Feb 1, 2014 12:28 am

A painting of an angel in the style of Keith Haring’s artwork was dedicated to Jordan Davis on Wednesday in front of his parents’ lawyer’s offices in Jacksonville. Friday it was removed.

An artist calling himself “Keith Haring’s Ghost” has been painting on utility boxes and buildings ever since the George Zimmerman trial last year in teenager Trayvon Martin’s death.

I just found Duval County Clerk of Courts - Links to Documents

Link in the Reference Thread

This link contains all the "Docket" entries... but in a simpler format, and most have links to actual documents.

Exposure to case likely big issue in Dunn jury selection
Posted: 6:17 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014
By Stephanie Brown

Jacksonville, FL — There’s been a consistent theme through the most recent pre-trial and motion hearings approaching the trial for Michael Dunn: concern over exposure.

While that’s been argued in the courtroom over whether media should have access to jail phone calls and similar pieces of evidence, the greater concern is the information would then get out to potential jurors. So as the pool flocks to the Courthouse on Monday, just how much people know and if they’ve already formed opinions will likely be a big driver in selecting the final panel.

“It’s not really jury selection, it’s jury de-selection,” says WOKV’s Legal Analyst Mark Rubin.

Either side of the aisle will be able to eliminate a select number of jurors for any reason. They can also more specifically petition the judge to eliminate over a specific cause.

I guess that is a file photo... Dunn has been appearing at recent hearings in orange jump-suit and looking a little deranged..... but it shows he does "scrub-up" OK... I expect him to look more like that on Monday :)

I had only seen snippets of this case in the news, and wasn't really interested, but now that it is going to trial I'll follow it. I read all 9 pages of this thread, and based on what I think I know, I would probably tilt mildly towards not guilty for the following 2 reasons.
1) guilty means beyond a reasonable doubt, and with the window of opportunity for the alleged weapon to be tossed, I would probably be able to entertain a reasonable doubt.
2) the shooting at the retreating vehicle might have been only a second or two. Once you are engaged in self defense, in fear for your life, it is probably hard to turn off your defense mode.

As to whether he is really guilty, I don't have a clue based on what has been revealed. I just see the possibility of a reasonable doubt for a legal conviction,
Mike

The Davisbots won't like that. I do think it is hard to turn off the adrenalin. A second or two is miniscule. I have no doubt that Dunn felt threatened by the 4 thugs in the car and their verbal uttering. He says he thought he saw a weapon. The guys drove away and could have stashed it. Reasonable doubt.

I can't get around that he was firing into a retreating vehicle and claiming self-defense. IMHO, driving away from a full clip firing (7/8 shots) by Dunn is the self-defense action. I don't think it is applicable to SYG either. So... I am curious to see how this gets addressed by the defense.
