WWII vet, beaten by teens outside Eagles Lodge, dies

SPOKANE, Wash. - WWII veteran Delbert Belton survived being wounded in action during the Battle of Okinawa only to be beaten and left for dead by two teens at the Eagles Lodge in Spokane on Wednesday evening.

Belton, 88, succumbed to his injuries Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Witnesses say Belton was in the parking lot of the Eagles Lodge at 6410 N. Lidgerwood, adjacent to the Eagles Ice-A-Rena, around 8 p.m. Wednesday when the two male suspects attacked him as he was about to head inside to play pool.

Police responded with K-9s to track the suspects' scent but were not able to locate them.

"It does appear random. He was in the parking lot, it appears he was assaulted in the parking lot and there was no indication that he would have known these people prior to the assault," Spokane Police Major Crimes Detective Lieutenant Mark Griffiths said.

Belton died from his injuries Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center.

89-Year-Old WWII Veteran Beaten to Death by Two Teens in Parking Lot; Suspect Photos Released

Belton was in the parking lot of the Eagles Lodge at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday when two male suspects assaulted him for no apparent reason.

Police have released surveillance photos of persons of interest in the homicide investigation. “They are described as young African American males of average build,” KHQ reports. They are believed to be between 16 to 19 in age and were wearing black clothes, while one suspect was seen wearing a black “do-rag,” according to police.

Demetrius Glenn, 16, Identified as Suspect in WWII Veteran Murder

Demetrius Glenn, a 16-year-old from Spokane, Wash., was identified as one of the suspects in the fatal beating of World War II veteran Delbert Belton, it was reported. The other suspect, Kenan Adams Kinard, who is around the same age, is still at large.

Alex Rozier of KHQ-TV reported that Glenn is facing first-degree murder and robbery charges.

He was arrested on Friday morning. Rozier said that he turned himself in to police custody, according to KHQ. Another local station, KREM-TV, confirmed the suspect’s identity as Glenn.

KHQ reported that court documents said his name was also spelt Demetruis Glenn, but was later corrected to Demetrius.

“I’m told by juvenile court that if the court decides to charge Glenn as an adult then he may make his first appearance on Monday,” Rozier wrote on Twitter. He is now on the juvenile docket but will likely be charged as an adult.

Rozier said the other suspect in the case is Kinard, born in 1997, and is likely driving a stolen vehicle. He is still at large, but Rozier says police are searching for him.

Robbery? Did they take anything from him? Even so, I'm betting he was targeted because of his skin color and age. It's illegal here to abuse the elderly, it's an aggravator.

I'd bet almost all I have (which is not much) that the motive was NOT robbery. Robbery might have been an afterthought, but more than likely it was racial and hatred. Many blacks have been urging other blacks to kill white babies (according to videos and websites I've seen). Maybe they thought the old man was about as helpless as babies?

That's what I'm thinking, seeing_eye.

Yet another elderly person, age 99, killed by Javon T Rogers who has been a suspect in burglaries around the neighborhood. IMO, she stumbled upon him stealing from her house and he killed her for it.

It's totally unbelievable to me that he's still employed there. I feel like I'm living in an alternate universe.

Actually, seeing_eye, compared to how things used to be, we are.

Manhunt in WWII Vet's Beating Death Ends with Teen's Arrest

Police in Washington State early this morning arrested a second teenager accused of robbing and "severely" beating to death a World War II veteran, ending one of the state's longest manhunts for a juvenile offender.

The arrest of Kenan Adams-Kinard, 16, ended a four-day dragnet. He has been charged with first degree robbery and first degree murder.

Adams-Kinard is believed to have received help while on the lam, according to police.

"Several other people with him have been arrested for rendering criminal assistance," according to Spokane Police spokeswoman Monique Cotton.

Adams-Kinard and another juvenile, who police have not named, are accused of killing Delbert Belton, 88, a veteran and pensioner, outside an Eagles lodge in Spokane last Wednesday night.

Belton was "severely beaten to face and head," Cotton said.

The first suspect captured last week was also 16-years-old and was named Demetrius Glenn. The police are calling the motive a robbery, and partially blame Mr. Belton for fighting back.
