K-9 officer fatally shot, police dog injured while serving a warrant in Massachusetts

BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) — A K-9 officer has been shot and killed while serving a warrant at a Massachusetts home. A suspect has been taken into custody.

State police say 32-year-old Yarmouth Officer Sean Gannon was shot Thursday afternoon in Barnstable, on Cape Cod. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Gannon was among the officers serving an arrest warrant at the home.

State police say Gannon’s police dog was injured. Its condition was not immediately known.

Lantanowich, a 29-year-old with a long criminal record, wore a black T-shirt and kept his head down during the brief hearing. As court officers led him in, Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson shook his head from side to side.

Before a courtroom filled with uniformed police officers, Thomas M. Latanowich pleaded not guilty to the murder of Yarmouth police officer Sean Gannon.
He was ordered held without bail.

Latanowich has been charged with more than 100 crimes in Massachusetts, according to court records, and has served time behind bars. Many of the charges were later dismissed.

Gannon’s dog, Nero, was shot in the face and neck and underwent surgery at Dennis Veterinary Hospital.

“Nero has survived emergency surgery and is being treated and taken care of by the best medical staff in New England at a location here on Cape Cod,” Yarmouth police said on Facebook Friday afternoon.

California festival gunman killed 2 children and 1 adult with assault-style rifle, police say

Gilroy, California (CNN) A 6-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a man in his 20s were killed when a gunman opened fire with an assault-type rifle at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in northern California on Sunday night, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said.
The weapon, an AK-47-style rifle, was purchased legally by the gunman in Nevada on July 9, Smithee told reporters at a news conference Monday.
The suspect -- identified as Santino William Legan, 19 -- also injured at least 12 others before he was fatally shot by three officers who responded within a minute of the gunfire beginning, Smithee said. Legan apparently entered the annual festival, which attracts about 100,000 people every year, by cutting through a back fence and then began shooting at random, the chief said.

Instagram posts bearing the name of the gunman mentioned a white supremacist book and showed a picture of people walking around the event shortly before the shooting began.

Mass shooting reported in Midland-Odessa: At least two dead, dozens wounded, one suspect reported dead
Initial reports said two shooters in vehicles were randomly targeting people in the West Texas cities.

A mass shooting has been reported in Midland and Odessa involving two suspects in separate vehicles shooting at people randomly; at least 30 injuries have been reported, according to CBS 7 in Midland. The station says a suspect was shot and killed at Cinergy Cinemas in Odessa.

“It has been confirmed that the active shooter was shot and killed at the Cinergy in Odessa,” the Midland Police Department posted to Facebook. “There is no active shooter at this time. All agencies are investigating reports of possible suspects.”

Two people were killed and up to 20 others were injured in shootings in Midland, Mayor Jerry Morales told the New York Times.

City officials previously told the TV station that one shooter was in a small Toyota truck and the other is in a U.S. Postal Service van. The Department of Public Safety has advised the public to avoid Interstate 20 in Midland, Odessa and Big Spring and remain indoors.

A GUNMAN opened fire on a Synagogue in Germany with a machine gun, it has been reported.

Two people are dead and dozens have been injured.

The attack took place in Halle – a city in Eastern Germany on Wednesday morning.

A grenade was also thrown into the Jewish cemetery, German newspaper Bild reported.

The gunman is now on the run and thought to be headed in the direction of Leipzig.

At least four people were killed and six others wounded Sunday night in southeast Fresno by “unknown suspects” who remain at large, the police department has confirmed.

In an update just before 10 p.m., Fresno police said 10 people had been shot just before 8 p.m. in the backyard of a home on the 5300 block of East Lamona Avenue near Caesar Avenue. The neighborhood of single-story homes remains cordoned off and nearby roads including Peach and Olive avenues were closed to traffic at 11 p.m.

“What we do know is that this was a gathering, a family and friend gathering in the backyard,” he said. “Everyone was watching football this evening when unknown suspects approached the residence, snuck into the backyard and opened fire.”
