Rumpole's Tip: USA practice lineouts :cool

Ummmm... I did say during warm-up games that USA needed to practice/perfect BASIC lineouts....

... so far they are hopeless still :(

Gave possession away at ALL their own first 4 lineouts.

It is a BIG DEAL. If a team fails at a basic "set piece" like that they end up giving away possession on attack and negating other good play.... on defense it it can well hand points to the opposition. A game can be won or lost with just one incidence of giving away possession at lineout time. It is something that can be coached, practiced, perfected. Teams dont succeed EVERY throw in.. but losing 4 in a row is poor play.

Otherwise they are looking good so far.

Wales may ask for Tom Wood to be cited for kick to Liam Williams’ head

    • Williams concussed by kick from England flanker at Twickenham
    • Wood apologised on Twitter but Wales believe he was reckless

Wales are considering asking the citing commissioner to look at the incident that led to Liam Williams being concussed 15 minutes from the end of Saturday’s victory over England at Twickenham.

Williams was kicked in the head by the England flanker Tom Wood as he was on the ground trying to secure a loose ball, and while Wales do not believe the action was deliberate, they feel it may be considered reckless. When the full-back tried to get to his feet he fell back to the ground and he will not return to action until he has been cleared by a specialist.

“There was definite contact between part of Tom Wood’s body and Liam’s head,” said the Wales defence coach, Shaun Edwards, morning. “It is something we are going to look at as regards citing and we will make a comment on that later on. It is obvious that there was contact with the head.

“It is a decision that will be made by Warren Gatland [the head coach]. We lost one of our best players in a position we are short in at the moment.”

This not the first Rugby on field incident to be shown after the conclusion of a match.

It looks like Wood deserves the equivalent of a "Red Card" and so excluded from remaining WC games. Not sure that will happen, and it doesnt help Wales really. You can not "Un-damage" a player, and Full-back is a critical position for the Welsh team with Leigh Halfpenny already out with injury.

What WOULD be good is if the England team were penalized in the form of POINTS on the Pool A standings table. Say 2 or 3 points subtracted from England and added to Wales? It wont happen :cool

Ouch!

You can tell in the first vid how after he was kicked, his face hit the ground hard. I'll be surprised if his nose isn't broken.

I need the second vid in slow motion, looped it a dozen times and keep watching the wrong Eng player.

I didn't realize The Guardian is UK .. never noticed. I did read an opinion piece/article in The NZ Herald today, by a Chris-someone, about the "arrogance" of the England players. I would described them as "brats" in the first half for several reasons and "bullies" in the second half. :)

I have a good feeling Wales will prevail. This is why all those alternate (and remaining) players train and work so hard, for the chance to play.

The incident make a mockery of all the shagging about with game stoppages and TMO replays and decisions etc in order to spot a player who (accidentally) harmlessly has an arm slip up to neck or head level. There has always BEEN rules about "stiff-arm tackles" and deliberate attacks like that. Most of what I have seen on replays are accidental and harmless. The game of Rugby has been gradually "Gelded" over the years. It is a contact sport and HARD tackles are part of that. Having said all that then MORE reason to penalize Wood in some REAL way for kicking a player in the head.... deliberately IMO... and clearly causing serious injury. Play has been repeatedly stopped , and players sent off for what amounts to a "hug" and friendly embrace (around the neck). I think my idea of penalizing the team's Points tally is a great and just and fitting penalty.

England's Tom Wood cleared over kicking Wales star in head

England flanker Tom Wood has been cleared to face Australia in Saturday's must-win Rugby World Cup match at Twickenham.
[....]
But the 28-year-old Wood - who has 40 England caps to his name - discovered on Monday morning that he has received a warning but will face no further action for the incident.
