The 5 Countries With The Most Psychological Disorders Posted By: Drew Hendricks on February 20, 2013 ![]() Devastating wars, horrific poverty, natural disasters, economic uncertainty and a multitude of other combinations have affected the psychological health of people all around the world. Third world countries to industrialized nations alike have reported numerous cases of their citizens reporting anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders and other mental health concerns. The National Institute of Mental Health compiled a list of extrapolated numbers of reported cases of psychological disorders. Here are the five countries with the biggest numbers. The National Institute of Mental Health http://www.rightdiagnosis.com/m/mental_ ... ountry.htm 1. China With China representing 20% of the world’s population, it’s no surprise that the most instances of psychological disorders occur there, and 17.5% of China’s population has some form of mental illness. Given China’s deep cultural history, some conditions are unique to its people – Koro, for example, a fear that the genitals and nipples (in women) are retracting into the body. A slightly more serious problem is the high suicide rate, brought about by depression. 2. India At a population of 1.2 billion people, about 17% of the world’s population calls India home. National Human Rights Commission estimates more than 20 million people – roughly the population of the greater New York area – suffer from some form of mental problem; however, the strict taboos in the conservative culture prevent many Indians from seeking help or even admitting any concerns. Even when the issues become too much to bear, people would sooner turn to shrines and temples than go to a doctor. 3. United States of America The National Institute of Mental Health estimates about 1 in 4 American adults – 26.2% of the country’s almost 314 million people – have some form of mental illness. This figure was estimated to be 57.7 million people. Most Americans suffer from mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, with many others afflicted by dysthymic disorders, schizophrenia, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders. 4. Brazil Even the Carnival of Brazil and a record five wins of the FIFA World Cup can’t stop over 23 million people suffering from conditions such as depression and anxiety disorders. Rampant poverty keeps care centers and therapeutic homes from reaching the poorer parts of the country – the 3 million people in the Amazon state are serviced by just four centers. 5. Pakistan Beset by sectarian violence, internal political turmoil and tense geopolitical relations with neighbor (and arch enemy) India, over a quarter of Pakistan’s people – between 30 to 40 million - have some form of mental disorder, with about half of them not seeking, or not being given treatment. As with India (and other, similar cultures), psychological illnesses are considered taboo, best treated by religious rituals than mental health practitioners, who number 1 for every 10,000 people. ....more at link http://topcultured.com/the-5-countries- ... disorders/ |
