He performed in the band alongside his brother Don and racked up hits including Wake Up Little Suzie and Cathy's Clown

US singer Phil Everly, one half of duo the Everly Brothers, has died aged 74.

Chicago-born Everly, who performed alongside his brother Don, died in Burbank, California, as a result of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Wife Patti told the Los Angeles Times: "We are absolutely heartbroken.

"He fought long and hard."

Phil and Don had performed as children as part of the Everly Family.

Together the pair, known for their harmonies and country-inflected tunes, racked up numerous hits, including Wake Up Little Suzie, Cathy's Clown and All I Have To Do Is Dream.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

Very sad news.... I have always been a fan. First aware of the Everly Brothers when I was a child in the 50's

I still play and enjoy their music to this day :cry

But I was while posting and listening to those songs.... and thinking about "Life, The Universe, and Everything!"

I am finding (as I get "older") that a LOT of people who make up my "mental world" are going belly-up!!. :94 :doh

How sad. :( We keep losing so many of the "greats".

This is one of my favorite Everly Brothers songs.
