UPDATE 1:35PM, MST: CSPD Lt. Catherine Buckley says that the gunman in a shooting near Planned Parenthood remains at large after injuring three officers and an unknown amount of civilians.

Everyone in the Centennial and Fillmore area is advised to stay inside.

Three victims have been taken to Penrose Main, while an unknown amount of other victims have been taken to Memorial. Their conditions are unknown.

Authorities are actively working through the businesses in the Fillmore and Centennial area to treat victims and locate the shooter.

UPDATE 7:02 p.m.: Springs police confirm that three people were killed in the Planned Parenthood shooting.

Among the dead were two civilians and a police officers working for the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. We are still working to learn more about the victims.

Police say nine additional victims were hospitalized, and are in good condition.

Despite the tragic loss of life, Mayor John Suthers said the loss of life could have been more staggering had it not been for the "brave responding officers."

"This is a terrible, terrible tragedy that happened today in Colorado Springs," he said.

The heavily-armed gunman who shot dead three and injured nine at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs lived in a cabin in the woods with no running water or electricity.

Robert Lewis Dear, 57, is suspected of killing a police officer and two civilians when he arrived at the clinic on Friday wearing a trench coat and opened fire with an assault-style rifle.

Police said that he was from North Carolina, and were looking for clues as to what exactly motivated the attack.

Neighbors of Dear from his time in rural Black Mountain said that he would often keep to himself and had a rambling manner when he talked, but that he did not openly discuss religion or abortion.

DENVER -- A man who acknowledged killing three people at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic told CBS Denver the shooting was spur-of-the-moment and he targeted the reproductive health organization because it's "murdering little babies."

In a phone call from jail, Robert Lewis Dear told the station Wednesday that he didn't plan the Nov. 27 shooting that also left nine people injured.

Dear said he believes FBI agents were following him that morning, and they tipped off employees that he was headed to the clinic.

"When I busted in that door on the side, all the people were gone," he said. "So they had been tipped off by the FBI or somebody. All the employees, everybody had gotten out the back."

Dear said he expected to die that day but gave up instead. He told CBS Denver he flipped a credit card to decide whether he should.

Dear's attorney, Daniel King, raised doubts about Dear's mental health after his repeated outbursts during court appearances.

Dear told the station, "I am sane, I am coherent, I have a college degree." He said he will refuse to cooperate with his court-appointed examiners.

"If I am coherent and sane why would I want to open Pandora's box and start answering all their questions so they can twist it around and say he's not?" Dear said.

"Well I'm just an honest man and I believe I'm guilty, so I am just going to plead guilty," he said.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A judge ruled Wednesday that accused Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Dear is not competent to stand trial.

Dear, 57, admitted to killing three people and injuring nine others in a shooting at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic on Thanksgiving weekend.

He will be sent to the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo for treatment. The judge has scheduled a review for Aug. 11.

At a court appearance in December, Dear had outbursts and called himself “guilty” and a “warrior for babies.”

Dear is accused of killing University of Colorado-Colorado Springs officer Garrett Swasey and two others at the clinic during a shooting rampage on Nov. 27. The 15 clinic employees survived.

Lead Colorado Springs police Det. Jerry Schiffelbei previously testified that he talked with Dear for more than seven hours after the shooting, saying Dear wanted to waive his Miranda rights and speak with detectives.

Schiffelbei said Dear made comments about “saving the babies” and “no more baby parts.”

Schiffelbei also testified that Dear believed “the feds were after him” since he called a radio station after federal agents raided the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, on Feb 28, 1993.

Dear was charged with 179 counts, including murder, attempted murder and assault.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A judge ruled Thursday that self-admitted Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Dear remains not competent to stand trial.

Dear, 58, admitted to killing three people and injuring nine others in the shooting at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic on Thanksgiving weekend.

In May, Fourth Judicial District Chief Judge Gilbert Martinez found Dear was not mentally capable of participating in and understanding the case.

Psychologists concluded Dear suffers from a delusional disorder, and Martinez agreed. Dear was sent to the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo for treatment.

Accused Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Dear continued his pattern of courtroom outbursts Tuesday as attorneys argued over several issues related to his case in El Paso County District Court.

Unlike the previous competency hearing, Dear was in the courtroom, but his shouting went ignored by his defense team, prosecutors and Fourth Judicial District Chief Judge Gilbert Martinez.

As Dear was led into the courtroom, he told the audience he needed to review the facts of his case and then accused Martinez of a litany of wrongs, including stealing court records and hiding them. Dear also said, Martinez “put me in the nut house, forcibly medicated me and now we’re going to censor the media.”

Dear’s willingness to call and write letters to reporters has become an issue in the case. Attorneys have filed a motion asking the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo to bar him from media contact. That issue will be addressed on Nov. 17 when Dear returns to court for a competency hearing.

A judge on Thursday ruled that Dear, 58, remains incompetent to proceed, a finding that leaves Dear's prosecution in limbo.

The ruling came at a half-hour hearing during which Dear, with a blue jumpsuit and neatly trimmed beard, offered more of the courtroom commentary for which he has become known.

"Four thousand babies are murdered everyday by Planned Parenthood!" he called out while shuffling toward the defense table with his legs shackled. He suggested a Google search term that he said would allow people to see a video of an abortion being performed.

The suspect remained stoic as 4th Judicial District Chief Judge Gilbert Martinez read the results of a state evaluation that found Dear remains unable to fully comprehend the charges against him and to assist in his defense.

Dear will return to court Feb. 15 to learn the results of another 90-day review of his mental fitness. The reviews will continue until Dear has either been restored to competency, or found to be permanently incompetent.

In a court appearance that lasted less than 10 minutes, Dear was ordered back to a state hospital for a 90-day review period.

Court allows admitted Planned Parenthood shooter to be forcibly medicated

The Colorado Court of Appeals upheld a ruling allowing admitted Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Lewis Dear Jr. to be medicated against his will.

The panel's unanimous decision Thursday can be appealed to the state Supreme Court, but it represents a victory for prosecutors hoping to eventually have Dear, 59, stand trial for the November 2015 rampage that left three people dead and nine people wounded.

Even so, forensic psychologists cautioned that antipsychotic medications were no guarantee to clear the delusions that have plagued Dear's mind for more than two decades.

"It'll be a long road - it's not going to be quick," said Max Wachtel, an Aurora-based forensic psychologist who has conducted up to 700 competency evaluations. Still, he said successful treatment is a "highly realistic" goal.

Dear believes FBI agents have followed and persecuted him as part of a nationwide conspiracy. The delusions have since grown to include the Pueblo hospital staff, who he believes "are not there to help him," Thursday's order said.

State hospital doctors asked the court to administer three antipsychotic medications and another to minimize side effects medications - Zyprexa, Abilify, Haldol and Cogentin - at least three of which are injectable.

It remained unclear Friday evening whether doctors at the hospital would begin administering those medications during Dear's 42-day window to file an appeal.

A judge on Friday extended the legal limbo of the man who admitted to killing three people and wounding nine at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs.

Fourth Judicial District Judge William Bain ruled that Robert Lewis Dear Jr., 60, remains mentally unfit to be to be tried in the Nov. 27, 2015, attacks.

The move means that Dear’s prosecution will be in abeyance while he is in treatment at the Colorado State Mental Health Institute in Pueblo.
