Local story from my neck of the woods... an officer killed in Rio Rancho NM... :cry

http://www.koat.com/news/rio-rancho-police-officer-shot/33213810

http://www.koat.com/news/man-accused-of-killing-rio-rancho-officer-has-long-criminal-history/33224966?absolute=true

http://www.koat.com/news/police-department-residents-mourn-loss-of-officer/33229818

I didn't know the officer personally. I drive by that area in Rio Rancho frequently and it's usually very quiet. Certain parts of Albuquerque are more likely to have this kind of trouble. They caught the alleged killer in south Albuquerque after he allegedly committed another violent crime after allegedly shooting the officer. (Need to remember "allegedly" although there seems to be a lot of evidence.) Just horrible.

So many good men and women have lost their lives to senseless violence and criminality...

:28 Hi Sue!

I just saw this on Twitter. Thanks for the links as I didn't know much of the story or about the officer - only the headline.
Not the first time I have seen an officer working past his shift and killed on duty. So tragic, too young.

And when it is close to your home, I think there is an added bit of sadness. :(

Colorado Shootings Continue: FBI Offering $10,000 Reward

INQUISITR.com
Posted: May 31, 2015

Authorities announced this weekend that the fatal shooting of John Jacoby earlier this month has been linked to the Colorado shootings last month in which one driver was hit in the neck. A reward of $10,000 is now offered for any information that leads to the arrest of the suspect.

USA Today reports that drivers are on edge in Windsor, Colorado after Jacoby, 48, was shot down while bicycling down a country road on May 18. Jacoby was shot twice and killed, making it the first homicide in the small town of Windsor in more than seven years.

Last month, 20-year-old Cori Romero was driving on Interstate 25 in Larimer County when she was shot in the neck. This incident happened only five miles from the spot where Jacoby was killed. Romero, luckily, survived.

After piecing information together, Colorado authorities announced on Friday that the two shootings were connected. According to Chief John Michaels of the Windsor Police Department, enough evidence was found to indicate that the two incidents are definitely linked.

I-35 reopens after standoff involving stolen police SUV turns deadly

WFAA.com
By Jason Whitely | 10:03 a.m. CDT June 3, 2015

DALLAS – Two brothers in a stolen police SUV died early Wednesday morning after a standoff that closed Interstate 35E near Waxahachie.

Law enforcement tells News 8 that one man committed suicide and the other was killed after pointing a police rifle at officers.

For more than two hours, deputies used the two-way police radio in the stolen cruiser to negotiate with the men inside.

The drama was heard live by thousands of people across the country who found the audio feed on the Internet.

The situation started at about 10 p.m. Tuesday when an Italy police officer pulled the brothers over on I-35 near the Italy exit, forcing them to pull into a Shell gas station.

There was "probable cause" to search their vehicle and the officer found a gun inside. While the search was taking place, the brothers jumped into the officer's Chevy Tahoe.

The officer tried to smash the SUV's window and ended up ripping the handle off the door. He suffered injuries to his hand.

A Milford Police Department officer at the gas station fired several shots at the tires of the SUV, but he suspects took off on I-35.

Ellis County Sheriff's Department deputies pursued the stolen SUV for almost an hour. Deputies even laid out spike strips to puncture the tires of the Tahoe.

Video shows Austin officers thrown back from exploding car

By KXAN News
Updated: June 3, 2015, 8:39 am

AUSTIN - Austin Police Department and Fire Arson investigators are looking into the cause of an explosion that sent three people, including two police officers, to area hospitals early Tuesday morning.

Fire officials say officers were trying to talk to a driver around 2 a.m. at the Stassney Food Mart on 5717 South Interstate 35. When officers tried to get closer to him, he jumped back in his car and said, “I think I’m going to set the car on fire,” according to APD dash camera video. A few seconds later, a loud pop is heard and fire engulfed the vehicle.

One of the officers said he saw the driver with a lighter in his hand, and investigators believe the car had fuel in it.

[…] These same people who you all know as “legal officials/police officers/sheriff/detectives” or any other falsified label of ‘authority’ only know wickedness and devilish behavior. It SHOULD be clear by now that this is a White Supremacist Nation Owned, Operated, and Controlled by White People.

Yes it is ALL white people who help to maintain this wicked nation to a greater or lesser degree given the default status aided to them by virtue or vice of White Privilege. Thus all functionalities, codes, rules, policies, curriculums, cultures and social criteria created or concocted therein are Meant to Benefit Whites. ~ Eric Sheppard Jr

[…] Sheppard’s lawyer, Mawuli Davis of the Davis Bozeman law firm in Atlanta, has characterized his client as “merely a college kid trying to figure out life under some extraordinary stressful circumstances” and has said he is not a threat to the community.

Third Colorado shooting sparks new fears, police check if killing linked to 2 other shootings

By Jason Hanna
Updated 9:21 PM ET, June 4, 2015

(CNN) - Police already believe the unsolved shootings of a motorist and a bicyclist in northern Colorado are connected. Now they're investigating whether a new outdoor killing is related.

A 65-year-old man was found fatally shot, lying on a sidewalk, in the city of Loveland on Wednesday night, the city's police department said Thursday. He was identified as William Roger Connole Jr.

"Bill was a generous, loving and caring father of 3, grandfather of 6 and friend to countless more," his family said in a statement, asking for privacy.

Authorities haven't said what led to the killing. But they said a task force is investigating whether it's connected to the other two shootings -- a driver was wounded in April, and a bike rider was killed in May. All three incidents happened within roughly 15 miles of each other.

The first two shootings, both unsolved and occurring in or near the city of Windsor, left residents with unnerving questions of who fired the shots, and why.

SEVERAL ARRESTS MADE AT THE SUMMER JAM CONCERT AT METLIFE STADIUM

ABC7, New York City
AP | Updated 10:20PM EDT

EAST RUTHERFORD -- Media reports say New Jersey State Police are trying to disperse rowdy crowds outside a concert at MetLife Stadium, and are using tear gas.

The Asbury Park Press reports that crowds at the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert Sunday night became upset when the gates were closed and blocked off by police in riot gear.

The newspaper reports that angry fans threw bottles at the troopers and that tear gas was later deployed by police.

A police spokesman, Sgt. Gregory Williams, told The Associated Press that additional troops were sent for "crowd control" and that arrests have been made. He said he couldn't release other details.

The concert hosted by a New York radio station and headlined by Kendrick Lamar and Chris Brown was continuing inside.

New charges for suspects in Boston terror case

CNN | Updated 11:14 AM ET, June 12, 2015
By Pamela Brown and Shimon Prokupecz

Federal prosecutors announced new charges Friday against two men accused in the Boston terror attack plot foiled last week when officers killed suspect Usaamah Rahim.

David Wright and Nicholas Rovinski are accused of conspiracy to provide material support to ISIS, the Department of Justice said Friday.

Rovinski and Wright are accused of plotting with Rahim to carry out violent attacks inside the United States in support of ISIS, the extremist Islamic group that occupies parts of Iraq, Syria and Libya and which has encouraged its followers to stage "lone wolf" terror attacks around the world.

Rovinski, of Everett, Massachusetts, was arrested Thursday night without incident, according to Boston FBI spokeswoman Kristen Setera. He was scheduled to appear before a U.S. magistrate Friday afternoon. Wright, who is also charged with obstruction of justice, was arrested shortly after Rahim's June 2 death. He is set for a June 19 court date.

[...]
During questioning, Wright waived his Miranda rights and spoken openly with police, the FBI has said. In his arrest affidavit, Rovinski is not named but described as attending a meeting on May 31 with Rahim and Wright on a beach in Rhode Island, where the three discussed "their plans," including the idea of beheading (Pamela) Geller.

Explosives found in bag after gunfire targets Dallas police headquarters

CNN | Updated 6:08 AM ET, June 13, 2015
By Ben Brumfield and Joe Sutton

Attackers opened fire on Dallas police headquarters early Saturday as an armored van charged the building, authorities said.

After the attack, police found suspicious bags near the headquarters. At least one contained explosives, prompting evacuations from areas around the police headquarters.

As an explosives robot approached one of them, it exploded, Maj. Max Geron tweeted. No one was injured.

Authorities believe up to four people may have opened fire from various locations with automatic weapons, including from the van, said Police Chief David Brown.

"There might be up to four suspects," Brown said.

Witnesses told police about the nature of the vehicle and the weapons used.

Windows shattered at police headquarters, but no one has been injured.

Police gave chase as more suspects jumped into the van, but one did not make it on board on time, Brown said. It's unclear whether that suspect was arrested.

The attackers and officers exchanged gunfire then police cornered the van in a fast food restaurant parking lot near an interstate.

"There is currently a standoff with what appears to be an armored vehicle in the Dallas suburb of Hutchins, Texas, around I-20 and I-45," said Maj. Max Geron.

Security has been beefed up at Dallas police stations and at Dallas City Hall, he said.
