CCTV shows the moment a lorry drives through an Essex industrial estate with the bodies of 39 people in its refrigerated trailer.

Footage recorded by a business on the Waterglade Industrial Park, Thurrock shows the left-hand drive truck passing through the estate just half an hour before an ambulance crew discovered the bodies of 38 adults and a teenager in the back.

The Scania lorry is originally from Bulgaria, but thought to be owned by a Northern Irishman. It had entered the UK at the Welsh port of Holyhead, where ferries arrive from Ireland, four days earlier.

The trailer is refrigerated, meaning those on board could have frozen to death while trying to get into Britain through the perceived 'weak point' of Ireland.

The lorry's driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder in what is one of Britain's biggest ever murder investigations. Police have not said where those who died are from or where they were thought to have been travelling from and to.

The deaths will lead to renewed calls for added checks on vehicles entering Britain through so-called 'soft spot' ports, with Border Force resources currently focused on Dover.



The fact that the lorry arrived at Holyhead on Saturday suggests those who died may have been in the back of the vehicle for at least four days.

A member of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) said the lorry could have got a ferry from France to Ireland, then driven through Ireland before boarding another boat to Britain.

The lorry driver who is believed to have picked up a refrigerated container at an Essex port, has been arrested for mass murder.

Mo Robinson, 25, had driven from his home in a small village near Portadown, Northern Ireland, over the weekend and collected the trailer from the port of Purfleet late last night.

Minutes later, his lorry was seen driving into the Waterglade Industrial Park in Thurrock, where ambulance crews and police were called and found 39 people dead in the back, including a teenager.

Robinson - whose partner back in Northern Ireland is said be expecting a baby - was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is today at the centre of one Britain's biggest ever murder investigations.

His stunned brother back home told BelfastLive the family hadn't heard from him and 'don't know what is going on'.

A family friend also stated that they had been 'told nothing' by the UK authorities who haven't even informed them whether or not he had been arrested.

Local residents have also spoken about the incident with some saying 'they couldn't believe' something like that would happen in their area.

I don't (yet) understand WHY THE DRIVER is being held responsible? He may well be.. but as far as I can see he picked up the trailer (long) AFTER the people died.. after it had traveled from France... to Ireland... to IK... across country UK.. to a UK port.. where driver collected it and drove to Industrial estate and called emergency services straight away.... he was the one who called Ambulance/Police.

THAT seems to have changed ... No trip through Ireland???

Robinson arrived in the UK at the weekend. He picked up the trailer, which had been shipped from Zeebrugge to Purfleet, yesterday evening. Minutes later, he pulled into the Essex industrial estate and the alarm was raised

Earlier, Essex Police had reported that the Bulgaria-registered vehicle had entered the UK through the Welsh port of Holyhead over the weekend. A regular ferry service connects Holyhead with the Irish capital, Dublin. Police later said only the truck, and not the container, had originated in Northern Ireland.



The fact remains... the driver picked up a trailer that already contained 39 dead bodies... not his fault!! ??

My Guess....

The driver may have been (was) involved in people smuggling. His job was to drive trailer short distance from Port to Industrial estate.. and open it to let people out (Few minutes job)... but he found the "cargo" were inactive..already (long) dead and he called ambulance... who then called police.
But... Driver NOT guilty of Murder (as such). Who knows what crimes can be indicted? Maybe an accessory to murder? But even that seems a stretch if the migrants were long dead when he got to the trailer?

I guess it is JUST POSSIBLE they were alive, until driver switched Freezer on? But I would think it would take some time for that to happen.. not just the few minutes from Port to Park.


I see plenty of comments to Youtube reports.. echoing my thoughts... eg
If the driver is innocent then he is probably upset that he had all them people dead in his lorry and now has the world casting him as the killer... Terrible journalism.

The driver of a lorry carrying frozen migrants from China apparently fainted when he opened the doors and saw their dead bodies - as police today convinced a judge to give them another 24 hours to question him on suspicion of murdering 39 people.

Maurice 'Mo' Robinson, 25, remains in custody at an Essex police station as detectives grill him on whether he knew the 31 men and eight women from 5,000 miles away were in the back.

A friend of the Northern Irishman has told MailOnline that Robinson pulled over near Purfleet docks in Essex to grab paperwork from the refrigeration unit only to find dozens of frozen bodies in the rear.

A witness told the Evening Standard that he then 'passed out' after dialling 999 for an ambulance at 1.40am yesterday morning.

Police are probing whether the immigrants were moved into the UK by a Northern Ireland-based people smuggling ring as three properties across the province were raided overnight, including Robinson's own home.

An Essex Police spokesman said: 'Detectives investigating the murder of 39 people in Grays have secured a warrant of further detention from local magistrates at Basildon for a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland.

The 39 Chinese migrants found dead in Essex had been dead for at least 12 hours before they reached the UK, it has been claimed.

The mayor of Zeebrugge, where the migrants were shipped from in a refrigeration container, insists they were dead before they arrived at the Belgian port town.

Temperatures inside the container could have been as low as -25C.

The trailer arrived at Purfleet from Zeebrugge in Belgium at around 12.30am on Wednesday after a ten-hour ferry ride.

Vehicles must arrive at the Belgian port one and a half hours before the boat leaves.

The lorry's front section arrived from Northern Ireland via Holyhead, Wales on Sunday.

The Mayor of Zeebrugge Dirk De Fauw said: "It proves once again how the human traffickers work.

"The trailer is hermetically sealed. No heat is allowed in to keep the products at the same temperature.

"If you end up in such a box with 39 people, you're going to die."

Joachim Coens, chief executive of Zeebrugge port, said it was unlikely people were loaded into the container at the Belgian port.

He told Flemish TV channel VRT: "A refrigerated container in the port zone is completely sealed. During the check, the seal is examined, as is the licence plate.

"The vehicle is checked by cameras."

The lorry and trailer left Purfleet shortly after 1.05am and officers were called around 30 minutes later after ambulance staff made the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, Essex.

The lorry driver Mo Robinson is reported to have passed out when he opened the doors to fetch some paperwork and discovered the bodies, a horrified witness told the Evening Standard.

He remains in police custody having been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 39 Chinese migrants who were found dead in the back of a lorry had travelled 5,000 miles and could have been locked in the freezing trailer for days.

It is thought that migrants were frozen, or had died of suffocation while being trapped in the metal container.

Belgium officials have since said that the migrants had been sealed in the dark trailer by time it reached Zeerugge at 2.49pm local time on Tuesday - meaning they could have been trapped for days.

Driver Maurice 'Mo' Robinson is said to have fainted when he opened the door and saw their dead bodies on Wednesday and police have now been granted an extra 24 hours to question him.

The 25-year-old, remains in custody at an Essex police station as detectives grill him on whether he knew the 31 men and eight women were in the back.

Six Vietnamese victims are thought to be among 39 migrants who were found dead in a lorry in the Purfleet area of Essex on Wednesday.

It comes as families continue to pray for news of their relatives who set off on perilous journeys to the UK, after it was revealed that one woman had text her mother from inside the 'metal coffin'.

Pham Thi Tra My sent her mother a series of harrowing messages telling her she 'loved her' and was 'dying because she couldn't breathe.'

Her family claim the 26-year-old paid people smugglers £30,000 to travel to the UK via China 'in search of a better life.'

At least six of those found in the container may have been Vietnamese and new reports from the BBC now claim that a 20-year-old man is also feared to be one of the victims.

Relatives of Nguyen Dinh Luong told the broadcaster that he may be one of those found in the container.

Vietnam's embassy in London said it had received requests from Vietnamese families asking for help in finding out whether their relatives were among the victims found dead in the back of the truck.

Tonight, police also revealed that a 48-year-old Northern Irish man has now been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and suspicion of manslaughter.

This comes as a husband and wife, thought to be the last known owners of the lorry, were arrested today after police swooped on their Cheshire home, three days into the biggest murder investigation in Britain since 7/7.

Joanna Maher, 38, and her husband Thomas, also 38, from Warrington, are understood to have been held on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and on suspicion of 39 counts of manslaughter.

Maurice 'Mo' Robinson has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter after the bodies of 31 men and eight women were found in the back of a lorry he was driving in Essex, police have confirmed.

The lorry driver, 25, will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Monday also charged with conspiracy to traffic people, conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and money laundering.

An Essex Police statement said: 'The Crown Prosecution service has authorised Essex Police to charge a man in connection with investigating the deaths of 39 people whose bodies were found in Grays on Wednesday.

I do not see how the driver who picked up a trailer containing 39 people already dead can be charged with causing their death. He may (or may not) have conspired with others in human trafficking... but (as far as we know) he was not involved at the time they were placed in the trailer, or later when they died?

UK LAW: Manslaughter: Voluntary and Involuntary

Unlawful Act Manslaughter
Where the death is the result of the defendant’s unlawful act. The act must be one which any reasonable person would realise could subject the victim to the risk of some physical harm. The foreseeable harm need not be serious harm. It does not matter whether the defendant realised this risk.

IANAL - but......

Based on what we know so far.....I can not see the charge of Manslaughter (39x) sticking?

Even if this driver was fully aware of the entire plot... the people DIED while he was miles away in another Country. Even if he KNEW that it was planned that others were going to shut a bunch of people in a container.. over in Belgium or France,.. he was not there doing it. The most he is guilty of is some form of "conspiracy" to commit a crime,maybe being an accessory? Maybe failure to report a crime (that had not actually happened yet?). He apparently DID report the crime once he was aware of dead people.

IANAL but I did a quick search of UK law.. and I STILL dont see "manslaughter" being appropriate in this case. It would have to be "Involuntary Manslaughter by an unlawful and dangerous act" it's the only section that comes remotely close. But this driver's actions were NOT a even a contributing factor. NOTHING he did in England (or Ireland) had any effect on the conditions of the victims when they died (in Belgium, or at sea)

Reading Wikipedia I see "Involuntary Manslaughter by an unlawful and dangerous act" requires 4 conditions:

The case of R v Goodfellow laid out a four-part requirement which if satisfied could lead to liability for MUDA. The person's action must:

1. Be intentional
   
2. Be unlawful
   
3. Lead the reasonable person to realise that some other person is at risk of physical harm
   
4. Be the cause of death

...NOPE!!


I really think "The authorities" are making a play to look like they are acting swiftly and toughly. To appease the angry mob calling for acrion. Such "politisized" use of the "Justice system" is yet another black mark for the UK justice system... and it has many. USA (and Trump) are well advized to NOT allow it's citizens to face the corrupted UK Police and "Justice System"

Sunday 20 Oct Lorry cab enters Holyhead
A tractor unit of the lorry enters the UK via Holyhead in North Wales, having travelled over from Dublin.

7.15am Tuesday 22 Oct Lorry cab spotted in Essex
The lorry cab was seen parked in Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays in Thurrock, Essex, by two witnesses.
One witness told Sky News they spotted the cab at around 7.15am, while another said they saw it parked there in the afternoon.

2.49pm Tuesday Container arrives in Zeebrugge
The container arrives at Zeebrugge on Tuesday afternoon at 2.49pm local time (1:49pm UK time) and leaves the port the same day, a police investigation finds.
Later on Tuesday, the container leaves the port and travels to the UK by sea.
(The Ferry trip Zeebrugge to Purfleet shows as 10 hr trip)
Which means it must have left Zeebrugge at 2:30pm UK time?

12.30am Wednesday 23 Oct Container arrives in Purfleet
The container arrives just after midnight on Wednesday in Purfleet, Essex.
It was then picked up by the lorry cab at around at 1.05am.

1.10am Wednesday Lorry and container drive to Essex
Around five minutes later, CCTV footage shows the lorry and container driving towards the Waterglade Industrial Park on Eastern Avenue in Grays.

1.40am Wednesday 39 bodies found
Essex police received reports of a number of people discovered inside a lorry container at 1.40am.
Ambulance staff found all 39 victims, including a young adult woman, dead inside the container. Police previously reported she was a teenager.
Police have since said eight of the deceased are women and 31 are men. All are believed to be Chinese nationals.

A container in which 39 migrants were found dead was part of a convoy of three lorries, it has been claimed - as police probe 'whether there is a wider conspiracy involved' in the deaths.

Relatives of the suspected victims say more than 100 migrants were being brought to the UK on the lorries, but only two are believed to have completed their trips.

Devastated relatives have been speaking out, including the tearful wife of one suspected victim who helped him raise £11,000 for the trip to the UK as two new suspected victims were named today.

It comes as this afternoon a man who is understood to be sought by Essex Police as part of the investigation into the 39 lorry trailer deaths was arrested at Dublin port.

The man, in his twenties and from Northern Ireland, was arrested after getting off a ferry on Saturday afternoon. A blue Scania truck that he was driving has been impounded by the police.

Joanna Maher, 38, and her haulage boss husband Thomas, also 38, from Warrington, - the last known owners of the lorry carrying 39 migrants - were also arrested yesterday in a dawn raid.

I don't want to be silly about this... but it does not seem like "Justice" to be charging people with Murder or manslaughter... if these were "drivers" who did NOT transport live passengers who subsequently died WHILE being transported. IF these drivers were part of the plan... then there may well be crimes that they can be charged with.. but NOT causing these deaths.

A man who is understood to be sought by Essex Police as part of the investigation into the 39 lorry trailer deaths has been arrested at Dublin port this afternoon.

The man, in his twenties and from Northern Ireland, was arrested after getting off a ferry on Saturday afternoon.

A blue Scania truck that he was driving has been impounded by the police.

It comes as police sniffer dogs are today scouring the £400,000 detached Cheshire home of a haulage boss and his wife - the last known owners of the lorry carrying 39 migrants who froze to death.

Essex migrants: Three suspects released on bail as work to identify the 39 victims continues

Three people arrested in connection with the deaths of 39 people found in a lorry trailer in Grays, Essex, have been released on bail.

Essex Police said a man and woman, both 38, from Warrington, were arrested in Cheshire on Friday and a 46-year-old man from Northern Ireland was arrested at Stansted Airport later the same day.

All three had been questioned on suspicion of manslaughter and conspiracy to traffic people.

On Sunday police said the man and woman from Warrington, named locally as haulage boss Thomas Maher and his wife Joanna, were released on bail until November 11.

The Northern Ireland man has been bailed until November 13.

It comes as officers investigate whether the container in which 39 migrants were found frozen to death in Essex was part of a convoy of three lorries.



Relatives of the suspected victims said they believed as many as 100 migrants were being brought from Vietnam to the UK on the lorries.

On Saturday Maurice Robinson, 25, a lorry driver, was charged with 39 counts of manslaughter over the deaths of the 39 people found in a trailer driven to Grays, in Essex.

Reports suggest two of the three vehicles in the convoy completed their trips, but the third was found at the Waterglade Retail Park in Grays on Wednesday.

Essex Police has said that one of their lines of inquiry was whether the lorry bringing in the 39 was part of a “wider conspiracy” intended to traffick more people into the country.

The lorry driver who picked up a -25C container carrying 39 migrants who froze to death was part of an international trafficking ring moving large numbers of people into Britain illegally, a court heard today.

Maurice 'Mo' Robinson, 25, who opened the container to find piles of bodies, appeared via video link at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court accused of 39 counts of manslaughter, two counts of people trafficking and one of money laundering.

Wearing a grey prison-issue tracksuit he showed no emotion as the 43 charges he faces were read to him one by one.

Prosecutor Iguyovwe Oghenerouna said the suspect is 'involved in a global ring facilitating the movement of large numbers of illegal immigrants into the UK', with his involvement allegedly dating back ten months to last December.

Ms Oghenerouna added: 'A large number of conspirators are still at large'.

Robinson, from Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, whose partner is expecting twins, did not enter any pleas and spoke only to confirm his name, address and his date of birth.

At the end of the five-minute hearing he was remanded in custody until November 25, where he will appear at the Old Bailey in London.

District Judge Timothy King remanded Robinson into custody, saying: 'You have heard the nature of the allegations you face and the majority of these can only be dealt with in the crown court.

'I therefore allocate all matters to the Central Criminal Court'.

Robinson's solicitor Julian Hayes made no application for bail.

I think it denigrates what remains of the once good reputation of "British Justice"

I assume there is evidence that this driver conspired to traffic migrants.. no doubt a serious crime He may have also been involved with transporting (live) migrants illegally on other occasions, but I do not see how he can be charged with Manslaughter (his actions causing the deaths) in this instance. They likely died in Belgium (or on the high seas), while this driver was in UK.

Detectives investigating the deaths of 39 people in a lorry in Essex are hunting two brothers suspected of manslaughter and human trafficking.

Police want to speak to Ronan Hughes, 40, and his brother Christopher, 34, who are understood to run a haulage firm from a farm near the border of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

The suspects are believed to be somewhere in Northern Ireland and detectives today urged those who know the pair to contact police.

Essex Detective Chief Superintendent Stuart Hooper said: 'This is a case where 39 men and women have tragically died and support from the community is going to be vital to help bring those responsible to justice.'

Police in Vietnam have identified the mysterious and violent kingpin who has made millions trafficking his countrymen into Britain and the US including the 39 people who lost their lives in Essex.

A mysterious people smuggler called 'Mr Truong' has been named as the mastermind now being hunted down by detectives in south-east Asia.

He is believed to be the gangster in charge of the 'global ring' based in Vietnam and is said to have links to the feared Chinese 'Snakeshead' organised crime syndicate set up by boss 'Sister Ping' in the 1980s.

And a special task force is hoping to corner Mr Truong in the Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces of Vietnam.

A source told the Daily Mirror: 'As much as these gangs like to hide in the shadows, their names are being whispered in the community.

'While they now threaten the families who were smuggled with violence to keep them silent, each day the police are building up a picture on the operation Truong oversees'.

He is believed to work with Chinese people smugglers, because many of the 39 migrants found dead in Essex were said to be carrying fake Chinese passports.
