I am LATE getting to this case.. the guy already convicted, but PENALTY phase (DP) started last Wednesday and is still underway. It continues today...

RALEIGH Wake County Assistant District Attorney Jason Waller pounded his fist on a courtroom table 18 times during his closing arguments in the Travion Smith trial on Tuesday.

Each loud thud against the wood represented the number of blows that Melissa Huggins-Jones, the mother of two, suffered on May 13, 2013, when she was bludgeoned to death inside her North Hills apartment.

“Eighteen times, that knife or that fist went to her head, neck or torso,” Waller said.

Then the prosecutor went silent for one minute in front of the six men and six women tasked with deciding the fate of Smith, the 23-year-old man on trial for first-degree murder.

Following closing arguments, the jury deliberated for just over an hour before finding Smith guilty of first-degree and felony murder.

Smith, who was forced out of his home when he was 15 years old, faces a possible death sentence. The jury of 11 whites and one Asian will return Wednesday morning to hear witnesses talk about any aggravating or mitigating factors the jury should consider in the punishment phase. A Wake jury has not sentenced anyone to death since 2007.

Raleigh, N.C. — Travion Smith exhibited a pattern of probation violations, interaction with gang members and a tense relationship with his father that led up to the 2013 murder of a woman in Raleigh, according to his probation officer.

The state’s witnesses on Friday described Smith as disrespectful while on probation and confrontational with both officials and other inmates while in jail in 2015. Smith was found guilty on Tuesday of the murder of 30-year-old Melissa Huggins-Jones in May 2013.

During sentencing, family members showed this photo of Melissa Huggins-Jones and her daughter. Huggins-Jones was found beaten and stabbed to death in her North Hills apartment on May 14, 2015. Ronald Anthony, one of three suspects charged, pleaded guilty and was setenced to life in prison on Sept. 8, 2015..

Prosecutors implore jury to sentence Travion Smith to death

Raleigh, N.C. — Attorneys presented closing arguments Monday morning in the sentencing hearing of Travion Smith, a 23-year-old man convicted last week in the May 2013 death of Melissa Huggins-Jones.

Smith, who witnesses said Friday exhibited a pattern of probation violations and interaction with gang members prior to the crime, will either be sentenced to death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A Wake County jury has not sentenced anyone to death since 2007, and a decision to do so requires unanimous consensus by all 12 jurors.

Three charged with murder in north Raleigh mom's death

RALEIGH, N.C. — Three people were arrested Wednesday in the death of a 30-year-old mother who recently moved to Raleigh and was found covered in blood inside her apartment last week.

Ronald Lee Anthony, 23, of 1800 S. Bloodworth St., Raleigh, Travion Devonte Smith, 20, of Raleigh, and Sarah Rene Redden, 18, of 3209 Scotch Pine Trail, Wake Forest, were taken into custody late Tuesday and charged early Wednesday with first-degree murder in the death of Melissa Huggins-Jones.

Her body was discovered by a construction worker about 7:30 a.m. on May 14 after her 8-year-old daughter approached a crew working at the Allister North Hills Apartments asking for help.

Huggins-Jones died of blunt force trauma, Raleigh police said Wednesday afternoon, and investigators believe the suspects tried to burglarize her apartment and made "unforced entry."

I think Judge Ridgeway just mentioned that there were 38 "mitigating circumstances" :roll

and just 2 aggravating circumstances.

Without hearing the details.. I call total BS on the "Mitigating circumstances"... having a crap life with crap parents dont count for shit :cool

Shame they can't fry the other two... IMHO :cool
