I don't understand why this is not be given more coverage. The Miami Herald doesn't have a reference page to court documents.

This guy is an animal. Lock him up and toss away the key. I know that I should wait for more information before deciding guilt or innocence by I have that picture of his wife and it just gets to me.

The South Miami man who allegedly killed his wife and posted a photo of her body on Facebook now faces a first-degree murder charge, according to online court records.

Derek Medina, 31, had initially faced charges of second-degree murder, shooting a deadly missile and child neglect without great bodily harm in the Aug. 8 shooting of his wife Jennifer Alfonso, 26.

But he had a court hearing Monday with the updated charges, according to court records. NBC 6 South Florida learned that an indictment was filed, but it was not immediately available.

The Miami man accused of killing his wife and posting a photo of her dead body on Facebook has been charged with first-degree murder.

Derek Medina, 31, originally faced a second-degree murder charge in the killing of wife Jennifer Alfonso, 26, on August 8, but the charges were upgraded Monday to highest possible offense.

The upgrade in charges comes despite Mr Medina insisting he shot his wife in self defense.

The accused killer reportedly previously admitted to shooting his wife six to eight times, but now claims the shots were fired in defense.

Forensic evidence gathered by investigators contradicts that claim, and shows the murdered woman was on her knees with one arm raised as she was executed.

Mr Medina told police Alfonso threatened him with a knife.

Authorities previously seized a stun gun, a.380-caliber pistol and two other pistols and ammunition and a large knife from the kitchen, The Miami Herald previously reported.

Police say Medina killed 26-year-old Jennifer Alfonso during an argument. Her 10-year-old daughter from a previous relationship was not injured.

Medina appeared in court over the summer wearing a red jumpsuit and shackles around his wrists and ankles, while a judge approved a request for the preservation of evidence.

I tweeted Jeff Weiner at the OS to see if he could find me some links but didn't hear back.

That guy just makes me rage. You can see from her position on the floor that she was most likely on her knees when he assassinated her. I might try Francis Robles since she came from Miami next.

The is a video of him going upstairs and returning to the kitchen. I watched the sink for any sign of muzzle flash and there wasn't any. To me, that means that the gun was lower than the counter. STRESS TO ME. And also note...I think I might probably be wrong on this.

Notice how after he shot her he went and got his phone to do the picture. And he did all this with her 10 yr. old daughter upstairs.

That freaking diary is depressing. She sounds so sad. When I was reading that, I thought of myself with Jim R. He took all my self-confidence away.

The one thing I thought when I read a small portion She said "little" to describe some kind of altercations. Made me think that she was afraid he would find that journal and read it.

And every time he did something disrespectful to her, she went above and beyond to stress how bad she was, being the bitch.

Yes.... a battered woman.... trapped... coming back even... classic stuff....there may be such evidence at trial perhaps... from a PROPER psychologist... the sort of case where Alyce LaViolette might well have been credible... if she had not blown her reputation on the nonsense she spouted on behalf of Jodi Arias. Maybe Alyce should reflect on this case... she did a great disservice to the types of women she claims to support.

Apparently the defense "deferred" their opening Statement.. did not give one after the Prosecution did theirs. The apparently still have the option of doing "an opening statement" after the prosecution present their case and rest.

The court is closed tomorrow and resumes on Thursday.
