Idaho Falls murder suspect arrested in Nevada

IDAHO FALLS - After a manhunt ensued earlier this month for an eastern Idaho man accused of killing his fiancee, he was arrested in Nevada Friday morning, KIFI reports.

Jeremy White, 39, is accused of killing 48-year-old Christin Caldwell.

Caldwell was found dead and buried in the basement of their Idaho Falls home.

According to KIFI, Nye County sheriff's deputies were tipped off that White was visiting family near Pahrump, which is about an hour's drive east of Las Vegas.

White was found and arrested there.

KIFI says a woman named Deena Ada - who was considered missing and endangered - was also arrested and charged with accessory to a felony.

Mount Vernon police officer critically injured in shooting

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – A Mount Vernon police officer was shot Thursday evening.

Police officers responded to a call about 5:30 p.m. that a man had been shot on North LaVenture Road and East Fir Street. When the officers arrived, they approached a residence, and the suspect began shooting at the officers.

One male officer was shot in the head and taken to Harborview Medical Center. He is in critical condition.

Officers said the suspect is barricaded inside a home, and they believe he has one hostage with him, although it could be more. Police said hostage negotiators are in contact with the suspect.

"It’s a very dynamic situation," said Washington State Patrol Sgt. Mark Francis.

Police said the suspect is "a violent offender and well known to law enforcement." He has been firing shots at a SWAT vehicle outside the home, including four shots at 9:53 p.m.

The officer is a 30 year veteran of the police force, and friends said he is dedicated to the force and loves his job. He is a training officer for Mount Vernon police, "one of the guys everybody looked up to," a friend said.

The officer is married, has two grown sons and a daughter, and is a grandfather. He also serves his community as a boy scout leader.

"Most stand-up guy you could ever meet," one friend said.

Boy, 3, out shopping with grandma dies in road rage shooting

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A 3-year-old boy being taken on a shopping trip by his grandmother was killed in a road rage shooting on Saturday when a driver opened fire on the grandmother's car because he thought she "wasn't moving fast enough at a stop sign," police said.

The boy and his grandmother were at the stop sign in southwest Little Rock on Saturday evening when a driver apparently angry about the delay stepped out of his car and opened fire, police said. The boy was struck by gunfire at least once, they said.

The grandmother, who wasn't struck, drove away and called police from a shopping center.

Police arrived at the shopping center and found the boy in the car outside a JCPenney department store. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died shortly after, becoming the second young child shot dead in a road rage incident in the city in the last few weeks.

Police Lt. Steve McClanahan said investigators believe the boy and his grandmother "were completely innocent" and have no relationship with Saturday's shooter, who was being sought. He said the grandmother simply was "driving the car and was taking her grandson shopping when the incident occurred."

Police said they were looking for an older black Chevrolet Impala that was being driven by a tall black man. They hadn't released any other description of the man and appealed to the public for help finding him.

Affidavit: Road-rage killing suspect said car was too close

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A Little Rock man who fired his gun into a car, striking and killing a 3-year-old boy, did so because he thought the driver of that vehicle was following him too closely, police said in an affidavit released Friday following the suspect's arrest.

Gary Eugene Holmes, 33, turned himself in at police headquarters Thursday night, Little Rock police said in a statement Friday. Holmes was being held in the Pulaski County jail on preliminary charges of capital murder and committing a terroristic act in the shooting death last week of Acen (AY'-sin) King.

Holmes pleaded not guilty to the preliminary charges and was ordered jailed without bond after a brief video arraignment Friday morning. Court records do not list an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

An affidavit from Little Rock Police Detective Steve Moore says investigators received a tip that the car involved in the shooting belonged to Holmes' girlfriend, who is not named in court filings. According to the affidavit, the girlfriend told police that she was in the car with Holmes when the fatal shooting occurred.

She told investigators that Holmes said a Dodge Charger was following him too closely, so he pulled over and let the car go past. The affidavit says the girlfriend told police that Holmes got out of the car and fired his gun after the Charger stopped at a stop sign for "a few minutes."

The girlfriend told police that Holmes said: "That's what you get for following me around."

Acen, who was riding in the backseat of the Charger, was shot in the back and later died at a hospital. King-Macon and a 1-year-old child who was also in the car were not injured.

The girlfriend said she and Holmes didn't realize he had shot someone until the next day.

Oregon State trooper shot multiple times, critically injured by homicide suspect

SHERWOOD, Ore. — An Oregon State Police trooper is fighting for his life at a Portland hospital after he was shot by a homicide suspect.

It all started when police were called to a home on SW King James Place in King City around 10 p.m. Sunday for a possible shots fired incident. When they arrived, they found a dead woman outside the home. Neighbors reported hearing several gunshots.

The suspect, 30-year-old James Tylka, was seen driving by troopers. One of the troopers gave chase, following Tylka to SW Gimm Lane south of Sherwood where the two got into some kind of confrontation and shots were fired.

The trooper was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being shot multiple times. Tylka is dead.

Oregon State Police say the trooper who was injured has been with the department for 7 years and is an Army veteran.

The brother of JonBenet Ramsey, the 6-year-old beauty queen found dead in the basement of her family's Colorado home in 1996, is suing CBS and orthers for $750 million, arguing the network's special "The Case of JonBenet Ramsey" ignored evidence to falsely point the finger at him.

In the lawsuit filed Wednesday, Burke Ramsey claims that the network, its production company and the experts interviewed in the series on the unsolved murder conspired to defame him for publicity and profit. The series, called "The Case of JonBenet Ramsey," aired in September ahead of the 20th anniversary of JonBenet's death.

The lawsuit says CBS and its featured experts set out to conduct a "sham reinvestigation" of the murder with "the preconceived the story line" that Ramsey killed his sister and conspired with his parents to cover it up.

"The accusation that Burke Ramsey killed his sister was based on a compilation of lies, half-truths, manufactured information, and the intentional omission and avoidance of truthful information about the murder of JonBenét Ramsey," the lawsuit says.

Scalea, physician in chief of the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, said Hogan underwent one surgery early Thursday but has many more to go. “He was awake and talking but clearly critically injured,” Scalea said. “He is still quite ill, but we are hopeful. It’s a little early to tell what else we’re going to have to do. We’ll see how things go for the next few days and few weeks.”

Scalea said Hogan suffered “a devastating injury” from the close-range blast. Shotguns fire pellets that spread out from the barrel of the gun. The doctor described a wound about the size of a softball. “There’s a huge amount of energy and a spreading zone of injury,” Scalea said.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. (AP) — An exchange of gunfire in a home on Maryland's Eastern Shore left one man dead and a sheriff's deputy critically wounded, authorities said Thursday.

Queen Anne's County sheriff's deputies were called to a domestic disturbance at the Chestertown home of James Rich II, 52. Rich's girlfriend, who had been staying at the home, sent her father a text message asking him to call authorities because she and Rich had been in a physical altercation, police said. The father called 911, but when Deputy 1st Class Warren Hogan and another deputy arrived, both Rich and his girlfriend were gone. The woman's father had taken her to the sheriff's office, police said.

After midnight, Hogan escorted the woman to Rich's home to collect some of her belongings and Rich and his teenage son were there. As the woman collected her things, police said she and Rich began to argue, then Rich got a shotgun and fired one shot. He continued walking toward Hogan and they exchanged gunfire. Both were struck.

Investigators are still piecing together a timeline, but it looks like the gunfire exchange was very quick, occurring within a matter of "seconds," Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said.

Rich was taken to a hospital in Chestertown, where police said he died.

Hogan was taken to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, where he is in critical condition after surgery.

Pennsylvania State Trooper Killed in Shooting Near Altoona
Manhunt underway for 32-year-old suspect

A Pennsylvania State Trooper has died following a shooting in a central Pennsylvania town late Friday, county officials tell NBC affiliate WJAC.

State police are actively searching the surrounding wooded area for a 32-year-old suspect identified as Jason Robison.

The trooper, assigned to the Huntingdon barracks, was shot near Hesston, Pennsylvania, a rural town about 30 miles east of Altoona. Pennsylvania State Police identified the fallen officer as Trooper Landon Weaver, who enlisted in the State Police in December 2015.

Police confirmed that the shooting took place while Weaver was investigating a domestic-related incident at a home around 6:30 p.m. Further details were not immediately known, and Huntingdon County District Attorney David Smith called the investigation "very fluid."

The area is very remote and heavily wooded. Police are using helicopters to assist in the search. People who live in the area are being kept away from their homes, and roads have been closed as the manhunt continues.

Calvert police officer shot during ambush; suspect in custody

ROBERTSON COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) - A Calvert police officer was shot in the early hours of 2017, and a bulletproof vest likely saved him from serious injury. Officials say they have a suspect in custody.

According to a Faceook post from the Law Enforcement Association of the Brazos Valley and shared by the Robertson County Sheriff's Office, Officer Stephen Magnes was wearing a bulletproof vest when he was ambushed while on duty Sunday morning.

The suspect's identity has not been released.

Suspect arrested in shooting of Valley Brook police officer

Oklahoma City police said Tuesday that authorities arrested 27-year-old Cory Lee Hartsell late Monday in connection with the shooting Sunday of Valley Brook Police Officer Brian Southerland. Police say Southerland had pulled over a vehicle on Interstate 240 on New Year's Day and was shot at least once in the leg.

Police say Southerland was struck in the femoral artery, and he was hospitalized in critical condition. Police said Tuesday that Southerland is expected to recover.

Police sergeant released from hospital after being attacked outside Dunkin’ Donuts

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk police sergeant who was assaulted with a caustic substance Monday morning has been released from the hospital.

According to investigators, the sergeant was exiting the Dunkin’ Donuts at 841 North Military Highway when a man walked up and threw some sort of liquid into his face. Police say the sergeant was not on a call at the time. A preliminary investigation found that the incident was unprovoked. They do not know yet what was thrown at the officer, only that it was a caustic substance, something that caused immediate burning to the sergeant’s eyes, face and neck.

Despite his injuries, the sergeant chased the suspect while calling for backup.

The officer was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with significant burn injuries to his eyes, face, neck and hands, but his injuries are considered non life-threatening. He was released from the hospital Monday evening.The sergeant and assisting officers caught up with the suspect in the 5700 block of E. Virginia Beach Boulevard a short while later and took him into custody. Police have charged 51-year-old Dale Patrick Bright of Virginia Beach with malicious wounding by means of a caustic substance.

Wounded Mt. Vernon officer makes slow progress, says first sentence

SEATTLE -- Mount Vernon police Officer Mike McClaughry, who was shot in the back of the head on Dec. 15, continues to make progress at Harborview Medical Center.

Surgeon Randall Chesnut told a news conference Friday that McClaughry can respond to commands, open his eyes and smile. He said he was "pleasantly surprised" by the officer's progress and cannot yet make a prognosis.

Still, the veteran officer is not awake or alert, Chesnut said. "He's still not out of the woods."

McCalaughry faces a long process of recovery and rehabilitation. And what is not yet known is what long-term effects he will face.

"There will be long-term implications of this injury. We need to sort out what they are," Chesnut said.

For the officer's family, this week brought hopeful signs. McClaughry was moved out of intensive care to acute care. Chesnut said his condition is no longer critical but serious.

And he spoke his first complete sentence on Thursday.

Wounded state trooper was 'ambushed' at scene of car wreck in Arizona, officials say

An Arizona state trooper stopped to help at a car wreck along a remote highway Thursday when he was shot and wounded in an ambush by a man who was bashing the officer's head against the pavement until a passing driver shot the man to death, authorities said.

The trooper suffered a severe wound to his shoulder and upper chest, but he is expected to recover at a hospital.

The drama unfolded at an early-morning rollover wreck on Interstate 10 in the desert west of Phoenix, where a woman was ejected and killed. Authorities think the man who shot the officer was driving the car that crashed.

The officer was putting out flares when the suspect opened fire and then physically attacked the wounded trooper, Milstead said. Both Milstead and Cecil said the trooper was ambushed.

The man was on top of the officer and "getting the better of him," slamming the trooper's head against the pavement, Milstead said. That's when the passing driver showed up and asked whether the trooper needed help.

He said yes, and the passer-by went back to his vehicle, got his gun and told the suspect to stop the attack, Milstead said. When he didn't, the driver shot him.

Police gathering in Fort Worth to escort body of slain Little Elm detective

Police officers began to gather just after noon Wednesday to escort the body of slain Little Elm police Detective Jerry Walker back home.

Walker, 48, was shot by a man with a long gun barricaded inside a home in the 1400 block of Turtle Cove Drive in Little Elm Tuesday afternoon, Police Chief Rodney Harrison said.

Officers with black tape across their badges were waiting outside the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office, where Walker’s body was being autopsied, on Wednesday. Police had formed a similar motorcade Tuesday night from Denton Regional Medical Center, where Walker died, to the medical examiner’s office.

Officials have not released information as to how the suspect died. He was found dead inside the home Tuesday night, Fire Chief Brian Roach said. A news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Walker was taken by patrol car to an area where a CareFlite helicopter could pick him up, Hinojosa said.

He was flown to Denton Regional Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead.

“He was a model officer,” Harrison said in a brief statement.

Walker joined the Police Department in September 1998. He was a father of four children, his youngest a few months old and his oldest 22 years old, Harrison said.

Nationwide, Walker is the sixth officer to be killed in the line of duty this year and the fourth to die from gunfire, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

What’s next for juveniles charged in Tennessee wildfire case?

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) – Many people have asked what’s happening with the two juveniles charged with aggravated arson in those deadly wildfires.

WDTN sister station WATE has been monitoring this every day, but there are some legal obstacles and built-in protections for juveniles to consider. Because of the gag order in the case, any of the principals involved, from the Fourth District Attorney General to the TBI to defense attorneys, would face prosecution themselves if they talked out of turn.

The news about the two arrests in the Gatlinburg wildfires came on December 7 in a live TBI news conference. The TBI’s Mark Gwyn said, “Unfortunately, these two individuals are juveniles. I can tell you that this investigation is active and ongoing and we still have a lot of work to do.”

That’s the last official word about the arrests of the juveniles who are not from Sevier County. Nothing much beyond that is known due to the gag order in the case.

Deputy Killed in North Dakota Shootout Had Just Started Job

A sheriff's deputy and a man suspected of stealing a minivan were killed in a shootout in northern North Dakota in which several officers opened fire, Rolette County Sheriff Gerald Medrud said Thursday.

Deputy Colt Allery, 29, was killed Wednesday evening after he and three other deputies exchanged gunfire with the suspect following a vehicle chase. The suspect has not been identified.

Allery had been with the sheriff's department for three months after previously working for the city of Rolette Police Department and the Turtle Mountain Tribal Police Department. Medrud, speaking at a press conference in Rolla, described his deputy as "full of spunk, cheerful, happy all the time."

The incident began about 6:10 p.m. Wednesday when officers responded to a call about a stolen minivan. Deputies pursued for about 15 miles, at speeds reaching about 85 mph, until the OnStar system was able to slow the vehicle, Medrud said. The suspect stopped at a remote intersection south of Belcourt, a town near the Canadian border that's about 240 miles northwest of Fargo.

Medrud said he believes the four officers, all of whom fired shots, followed protocol. Both Allery and the suspect were dead at the scene.

UPDATE: Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said Westwego officer Mike Louvier was shot in the head this morning and died from his injuries.

A woman who was shot also died. The woman called police at 6:30 a.m. to say she had been shot.

The domestic incident spilled out into the street, where Louvier had stopped to help with what he thought was a traffic accident.
Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for a person of interest, Sylvester Holt, 22. There were several protective orders in place before the domestic incident and subsequent shooting occurred.

Louvier was 26 and leaves behind a wife and two kids.

The woman who died has not been identified.

Officers have found the vehicle Holt fled the scene in. It was found about a half-mile from where the shooting happened.

“Here we are again, staring the obvious in the face dealing with the national rhetoric of all different kinds of things meanwhile police officers are getting shot, killed and other folks are getting shot and killed over domestic disputes in one of the most heavily trafficked portions of highway in Jefferson Parish,” Normand said.

Westwego Police Chief Dwayne Munch said Louvier joined the department in July 2015. He was a former Marine who served in Afghanistan. He graduated at the top of his class at the Kenner Police Academy.
