Raleigh man accused of killing former girlfriend points finger at wife
By Anne Blythe
August 29, 2013

RALEIGH — Laura Jean Ackerson, a Kinston mother of two whose dismembered body was found in a vine-laden Texas creek in July 2011, had been recording conversations with the father of her sons, saving emails and text messages, and storing some messages in a secret file that she and one other knew about, according to a friend.

Shortly before her death, Ackerson, 27, had been engaged in a what her friends described as a bitter custody battle with Grant Ruffin Hayes, the Wake County musician with whom she had two sons and who now is accused in her death. Her friends contend she took those steps because she was worried about what Hayes might say in court or might do to her out of court.

A custody hearing had been set for August 2011 in Lenoir County, friends said, and Ackerson was seeking more time with her toddlers than the two days per week that a previous court order had restricted her to.

That hearing never happened.

Ackerson went missing two years ago on July 13 – the day Wake County prosecutors say she was murdered.

Without the help of Texas investigators, North Carolina prosecutors say they might never have cracked the case of a woman whose dismembered body was dumped in Oyster Creek near Richmond.

Amanda Hayes, 41, was found guilty of second-degree murder Feb. 19 in the death of Laura Jean Ackerson in July 2011 and was sentenced to 13 to 16 years in prison. The four-week trial began Jan. 21 in Wake County Superior Court in Raleigh, N.C.

Boz Zellinger, a prosecutor in the case, said he was impressed by the work of Fort Bend County officials, the Richmond Fire Department and the Houston Police Department dive team.

Hayes convicted of second-degree murder in Laura Ackerson's slaying
Posted February 19

Raleigh, N.C. — A Wake County jury found Amanda Hayes guilty of second-degree murder Wednesday in the death of her husband's ex-girlfriend, Laura Ackerson, whose dismembered remains were found in a Texas creek nearly three years ago.

Wake County Assistant District Attorney Boz Zellinger Amanda Hayes trial closing arguments

Hayes, five weeks from giving birth to a girl, along with her husband, Grant Hayes, was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder 12 days after Ackerson's July 13, 2011, death.

She was later indicted on a charge of accessory after the fact to murder, and she went to trial Jan. 21.

Forty-nine witnesses, including the defendant, took the stand over 13 days of testimony in the month-long trial, and the jury of three men and nine women returned its verdict Wednesday after more than 11 hours of deliberations in the case.

If anyone is interested in this case - Grant Hayes conducted a telephone interview from prison to a reporter, he is of course, giving his version of what he says happened - do I believe him - not a bit of it, he and his wife did a terrible thing to the mother of his two young children. All of this because of a bitter custody battle - what we have at the end of it are 3 children all under 5 with no parents - they will suffer too.

Prison interview if anyone's interested in hearing what he has to say. He's blaming his wife I think.

On other sad fact is that one of the children - the 3 year old witnessed his mother's death - how awful is that, let us just hope that he has no memory of it as he grows up.
