Feline Behavior: Why Do Cats Headbutt Their Owners? ![]() Ever wondered why kitty randomly headbutts your leg? Or arm? Or head? The funny action actually has a name – “bunting” – and there’s a reason behind the curious behavior! It’s not headbutting in the human sense, because the motivation for kitty is rubbing on you and leaving his or her scent glands there. You can take it as a compliment, because your cat’s intentions are purely friendly – bunting is actually something cats generally only do with other animals and humans they’re familiar with. So… what exactly is a cat trying to say with each and every head bump? What does it mean when a cat's tail is vertical? I ask because this morning I was walking my dog and we came upon a gorgeous black and white cat. I thought it may have been scared as my dog barked and ran back and forth in front of it (playing), and it went behind a bush, but then it didn't run away and started meowing at us. I petted her for awhile and she seemed like she wished we would stay. Such a nice cat. Not sure which neighbor she belongs to, but her tag says her name is Kiddens. |

I think the cat with an erect tail... was "just pleased to see you" ![]() It's certainly not a negative sign. Cats at feeding time will run to their bowls with tails erect. |
