Coronavirus in New Zealand

I was VERY unhappy with the result of the last general election in New Zealand. Even though our "conservative" party won a plurality.... we ended up with the "loony left" party being propped up in a Left coalition government. In particular our PM is Jacinda Ardern... (reminds me of AOC)
But credit where credit is due... she just announced the strongest travel restrictions in the world (same as Israel) :)

Until today NZ had only 5 cases, and that was unchanged for 5 days. We are awaiting some test results, and today a 6th case was announced... but so far so good.

coronvirus test results
.

An Australian man visiting New Zealand says he has tested positive for coronavirus and is now self-isolating in a Wellington hotel room.

Townsville man Andre Reynaud confirmed to the Herald that he had tested positive for Covid-19 - he would be the seventh case of the virus in this country and the first to be based outside Auckland.

The Herald contacted the Ministry of Health to confirm Reynaud's positive test result after Australian media reported his diagnosis. Health officials declined to comment, noting that Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield is due to speak to media at 2.30pm today.

Coronavirus: Eight positive Covid-19 cases confirmed in NZ

New Zealand now has eight confirmed cases of Covid-19, with two more people testing positive, says Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield.

Bloomfield said both cases have overseas links, with the first man, who is in his 60s, visiting from Australia.

He arrived in Wellington from Brisbane at 12.05am on 14 March on Flight Air NZ 828.

Health authorities were informed later that morning of the positive test and the man is now symptom free and remains in isolation with his partner.

He does not need hospital treatment and authorities here are checking with their Australian counterparts as to what information was provided prior to travel.

The eighth case is a woman in her 30s from Denmark who arrived via Doha on flight QR920 Tuesday 10 March and then flew from Auckland to Christchurch on Jetstar flight JQ225. She then travelled to Queenstown in a private rental vehicle.

The woman was unwell when she arrived in Queenstown and then hospitalised.

She is being cared for in isolation and is recovering well and being monitored by health services.

The Coronavirus data site was "Hacked"

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Quote:
We apologize for the temporary disservice that you may have experienced. For about 20 minutes, our site showed clearly incorrect data due to a malicious act. We have investigated the issue and we're now implementing protective measures to prevent this from happening again. The other day we got hit with a big DDoS attack. Now this. We'll continue with our daily efforts and we'll not give up.

I did notice that cases rose from 169,000 to 737,000

Looked like Vatican city numbers (1 case) were altered. to 568,000 cases and 892,000 deaths (more deaths than total cases) :doh

A cruise around New Zealand has abruptly ended with passengers removed from the ship and left in Wellington.

Coronavirus: Cruise ends abruptly, passengers let loose in Wellington

Tom Hunt13:39, Mar 16 2020

Passengers aboard the Le Laperouse, a small cruise ship which docked in Wellington on Monday morning, confirmed the remainder of the trip around New Zealand had been cancelled.

All passengers had been told to get off the ship.

However, New Zealand Cruise Association chief executive Kevin O'Sullivan said the 150 passengers were not kicked off the ship.

One passenger told Stuff no restrictions had been put on their movements in Wellington. There was no known sickness on board.

Some passengers who had disembarked were seen getting onto a sight seeing bus.

As of this 1am morning, all cruise ships not already in New Zealand waters have been denied entry into the country.

However, Le Laperouse's online itinerary shows the cruise started in Auckland on Thursday and was scheduled to finish in Dunedin on Saturday.

Hydroxychloroquine

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxychloroquine

Quote:
Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria.[1] Specifically it is used for chloroquine-sensitive malaria. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth.

Common side effects include vomiting, headache, changes in vision and muscle weakness. Severe side effects may include allergic reactions. It does not appear to be safe during pregnancy. Hydroxychloroquine is in the antimalarial and 4-aminoquinoline families of medication.

Hydroxychloroquine was approved for medical use in the United States in 1955. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system. The wholesale cost in the developing world is about $4.65 per month as of 2015 when used for rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. In the United States the wholesale cost of a month of treatment is about US$25 as of 2019.[6] In the United Kingdom this dose costs the NHS about £5.15.[7] In 2016 it was the 135th most prescribed medication in the United States with more than 4 million prescriptions.

3 more NZ cases.... :wall
Mar 17, 2020 3:35 PM
RNZ Live

Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says New Zealand has three new confirmed cases of Covid-19.
All three are associated with returning from international travel.

Two of the cases traveled to Wellington and one to Dunedin.
The man in Dunedin, in his 40s, began to show symptoms five days after returning from Germany.

Two of his family members, who have Covid-19 symptoms, are in self isolation.

The son of Dunedin case goes to Logan Park school in Dunedin.

He has symptoms and if he tests positive, the Ministry of Health is recommending the school closes.

Around the country, there are about 500 Covid-19 tests being conducted today.

The two cases in Wellington are a man in his 30s and his father, in his 70s. (returned from USA)

Dr Bloomfield said a traveller (woman) who arrived in Christchurch yesterday was unwilling to self-isolate, so plans were being made to deport that person.

Coronavirus: Tourists to be deported from NZ for having no plans to self-isolate
Sam Sherwood17:47, Mar 17 2020

Two tourists face deportation a day after arriving in New Zealand with no clear plans to self-isolate as the country tries to halt the spread of coronavirus.

They are the first to be face deportation as officials kick off spot checks of those who arrived in the country after 1am on Monday to ensure they self-isolate for 14 days.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) said the pair arrived from South East Asia on Monday morning. The pair are required to remain in New Zealand for 14 days of self-isolation.

"This kind of behaviour is completely irresponsible and will not be tolerated which is why these individuals have been made liable for deportation," INZ compliance and verification general manager Stephen Vaughan said.

"They are currently being quarantined. If they fail to depart after quarantine, they will be arrested and detained under the Immigration Act."

Officers arrived at the Rucksacker backpacker hostel in Christchurch about 11.30am on Tuesday. A witness reported seeing a police prisoner van transport a woman wearing a mask, and several police officers were seen speaking to other backpackers.

Image

The hostel's manager, who declined to be named, said a woman wearing a face mask arrived late on Monday night to check-in. The woman, who was originally booked into a dorm for one night, asked for a private room.

"I put her into a private room and then in the morning when I got up to open reception there was a lady from the Ministry of Health here coming to check on her and ask what her plans were for her isolation," the manager said.

"They were just questioning her for a little bit in my office. And then a couple of hours later we had about five police officers an another person from the ministry and they eventually took her away."

She said the woman was "a bit upset", but did not cause a scene.

Coronavirus: Two travellers in custody for non-compliance with self-isolation rules
12 minutes ago
Rachel Sadler

Image

Two travellers are in custody after they didn't comply with the new COVID-19 self-isolation requirements.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) confirmed they arrived in the country on Monday morning from southeast Asia.

Their failure to comply with the requirements to self-isolate means they're now liable for deportation under the Immigration Act, INZ says. However, they will have to remain in quarantine in New Zealand for 14 days to complete their self-isolation period.

INZ Compliance and Verification general manager Stephen Vaughan says they have put New Zealanders at risk by not self-isolating.

"This kind of behaviour is completely irresponsible and will not be tolerated which is why these individuals have been made liable for deportation," he says.

"If they fail to depart after quarantine, they will be arrested and detained under the Immigration Act.

"Being deported has serious consequences. It means individuals will be banned from returning to New Zealand for a period of time and they may also find it difficult to travel to other countries."

He says there's a "good reason" why there are self-isolation requirements in place since it helps save lives and reduced the spread of COVID-19.

"New Zealand is going hard, and going early, to do everything it can to protect New Zealand from COVID-19 and INZ is committed to doing all it can to help protect New Zealand during this uncertain time."

Earlier today, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed there were three new cases in this country, including one in Dunedin.
