Coronavirus: Government shutting borders to all but citizens and permanent residents

New Zealand is closing its borders to everyone but citizens and permanent residents in an attempt to stop the growth of coronavirus.

The ban is in place for planes boarding after 11.59pm on Thursday - any planes in the air already would not be impacted.

Partners and children of citizens or permanent residents are exempt from the ban, as are some health workers and humanitarian workers.

All at home, not in hospital.

Five of the 11 are in Auckland, two in Hamilton, two in Wellington, one each in Canterbury and Hawke's Bay.

NZ is okish at the moment, but I have followed various places where they look OK, but soon show lots of cases . Mostly because testing is done and shows up that have been there all along. I am in the Risk category.. 68 years old and have been a smoker all my life. My wife same age and has had breathing/asthma issues, so we would like to avoid the thing. I am normally a "recluse" anyway, but my wife works, travels on public transport and so I was worried about her being exposed. She started working from home last Thursday, as did the rest of her office, so we are safe for now. We just went shopping, as we normally do on a Saturday, and the place was full and overflowing at 8:00 am!!

Coronavirus: 56 New Zealanders being contacted after Covid-19 cases on cruise ship

The Ministry of Health is contacting 56 New Zealanders who were on a cruise ship which had four people test postive for Covid-19.

The Ruby Princess, which left New Zealand six days ago, and has had three Australian passengers and one crew member test positive for Covid-19.

The advice will be to be vigilant and contact their GP or Healthline if they display any Covid-19 symptoms.

The ministry is working with Customs and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to check which New Zealanders on board have now returned to this country.

The Ruby Princess left Sydney on 8 March, travelled to Fiordland (11 March), Dunedin (12 March), Akaroa (13 March), Wellington (14 March) and Napier (15 March).

The cruise was shortened after visiting Napier, for weather reasons, and the ship returned directly to Sydney and passengers disembarked on 18 March.

New Zealand... 53 52 cases

Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield says there are 14 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hours

Bringing the total number of cases to 53 confirmed (+4 probable)

Three of the confirmed cases are in hospital, Bloomfield says.

Of the new cases in the past 24 hours, Bloomfield says the two cases not linked to travel are one in Auckland and one in the greater Wellington region.

They are now investigating whether these people have had close contact with anyone who has traveled overseas, he says.

"In the case of the Wairarapa [person], we can't rule out the risk of community transmission."

The person in the Wairarapa is symptomatic, which is why the clinician decided to test, Bloomfield says.

The locations of the new cases are; 4 in Wellington, 1 in Taranaki, 3 in Auckland, 1 in Waikato, 1 in Taupo, 1 in Manawatu and 2 in Nelson.

We have an update from the Ministry of Health:

The Ministry of Health has made a correction, 13 new cases of Covid-19 today bringing the total to 52.

It was previously reported that it was 14 cases. (+4 probable)

13 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the past 24 hours in New Zealand.

Locations are: Wellington region 4, Auckland 3, Waikato 1, Taupo 1, Manawatu 2, Nelson 2.

The total number of cases today is 52 confirmed and four probable.

The strangest sight of all around here is almost empty freeways.
A lot of freeway accidents are happening because of people driving too fast (because they now can)!

You don't have business shutdowns now - do you?

We have some businesses shut down... also indoor gatherings limited to 100, outdoors 500.

Sports shut down, concerts and other gatherings cancelled.

14 new cases today

NZ has a total of 67 66 cases, including 4 probable cases.

They all have a history of international travel.

Two cases were announced yesterday where community tranmission can not be ruled out, and there is still not a firm link to overseas travel.

The locations of the 14 new cases are: 5 cases in Auckland, 1 in Northland, 1 in Canterbury, 2 in New Plymouth, 2 in Waikato, including 1 in Hamilton, 1 in Tauranga, 1 in the Coromandel and 1 in Dunedin.


The alert level remains at level 2.

There are 36 new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand.

Of the cases today, over half are directly related to overseas travel.

Most of the remaining cases are close contacts of previously confirmed cases.

There remain two that we cannot be certain where infection came from, we are therefore treating them as community transmission.

Ministry of Health reiterates the two cases which could be community transmission are in the Wairarapa and Auckland.
