Nine Americans killed in Mexican ambush, Trump urges joint war on drug cartels

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Gunmen killed nine women and children in the bloodiest attack on Americans in Mexico for years, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to offer to help the neighboring country wipe out drug cartels believed to be behind the ambush.

All nine people killed in Monday’s daytime attack at the border of Chihuahua and Sonora belonged to the Mexican-American LeBaron family, members of a breakaway Mormon community that settled in northern Mexico’s hills and plains decades ago.

A video posted on social media showed the charred and smoking remains of a vehicle riddled with bullet holes that was apparently carrying the victims on a dirt road when the attack occurred.

“This is for the record,” says a male voice speaking English in an American accent, off camera, choking with emotion.

“Nita and four of my grandchildren are burnt and shot up,” the man says, apparently referring to Rhonita Baron, one of the three women who died in the attack.

A group of cartel gunmen ambushed and murdered three women and six children near a rural Mormon community in Mexico, close to the New Mexico border. Six more children, all from the same family, were also injured. One additional girl remains missing. Relatives stated that all of the victims are dual U.S. and Mexican citizens.

The attack took place on Monday when three women from the Lebaron family were driving their 14 children from the town of Bavispe, Sonora, to a rural Mormon community called La Mora. According to Mexico’s SinEmbargo.com.mx, Rhonita Miller Lebaron was driving one of the vehicles with her four children–two six-month-old twins and two ages 8 and 9–when her SUV got a flat tire. Her relatives turned back towards Bavispe to bring a spare.

There is certainly a MILITARY component to what is needed to control/defeat Mexican Drug cartels

They do run "armies" themselves.. savage and brutal.. prepared to torture and behead people (much like ISIS savages). Threats of extreme violence are used to control law enforcement, judiciary, and political leaders.
Recently the Mexican police/military engaged with Cartel forces... AND LOST!
I would say there is a role for US military to assist (do the job) if asked.

However... there is more to the Cartels than just their forces "in the field"... they also control (through bribes and treats) government entities, and I am sure many prominent Mexican officials are in fact active supporters/protectors of the Cartels. Any military action to capture and kill also needs to include acting to investigate/arrest participants in corruption (at the top) and must include all the people lower down who are "on the take" and so part of the Crime organization themselves.

At least nine American citizens, including a mother of seven and her 8-month-old twins, were killed in a roadside ambush on a highway in the Mexican state of Sonora on Monday.

Three vehicles were attacked and set on fire by gunmen believed to have ties to organized crime, family members told NBC News.

Among those killed were Rhonita Miller, 30, and her 8-month-old twins, Titus and Tiana, as well as two of her older children, Howard Miller, 12, and Krystal Miller, 10, family member Kendra Lee Miller told NBC News.

Also killed were Christina Marie Langford Johnson, 29; Dawna Langford, 43; Trevor Langford, 11; and Rogan Langford, 2, Miller said.

Christina Marie Langford Johnson's 7-month-old daughter, Faith, somehow survived a volley of gunfire after her mother put her on the floor of her SUV in her carseat, Miller wrote in a detailed Facebook post on Tuesday morning about the attack.

The three women were each driving in separate vehicles after deciding to travel in a convoy together because there had been "some issues with the mafia," Miller said.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Tuesday swiftly rejected an offer from U.S. President Donald Trump to send American troops over the border to "wage war" on drug cartels after assailants killed at least nine members of a fundamentalist Mormon family in northern Mexico.

During a press conference Tuesday, López Obrador, commonly known as AMLO, thanked Trump and "any foreign government which wants to help" in the aftermath of the gruesome killing of dual U.S.-Mexican citizens, which authorities believe was carried out by cartel members.

"But in these cases," AMLO said, "we have to act independently and according to our constitution, and in line with our tradition of independence and sovereignty."

"War is irrational," the Mexican president added. "We are for peace."
