I do remember Chernobyl as a news event 1986. I was working in a Chemical Engineering Lab at the time (in NZ) , running "Process Control" labs using equipment similar to what you find in any Process Control room... lights and buttons and switches which ultimately control pumps, valves, flow of reagents, tank levels etc. I also visited REAL WORLD chemical process sites.. and control rooms very similar to what you see portrayed in the Chernobyl series. Sure the stuff I saw was NOT NUCLEAR and so a cock-up would not have dire wide consequences.. but local chemical plant explosions/leaks can be pretty serious ![]() Anyway... it occurs to me that people I know who are "concerned about passive cigarette smoke"... even outdoors.. and who see "Climate Change" of perhaps 1 degree in a 100 years, as a "Climate Crisis", need to get a GRIP and look at Chernobyl. I know people in Scandinavia... who chose to settle there... and yet the entire region was hit with Chernobyl fallout.. and is far more at risk from future "radioactive dust" A HUGE radioactive cloud that showed as fallout right across all of Northern Europe, Scandinavia, the UK. Downplayed by authorities, but sufficient to cause Milk and farm crops withdrawn and disposed of. The Radioactive dust that already settled is STILL there.. likely buried.. but will remain radioactive for decades (if not longer) in all these countries. And Chernobyl is STILL THERE.. encased in a cover, but who knows if that will never suffer some sort of leak? And... there are 20 more Soviet reactors (and other nation's reactors) which all contain the SAME sort of toxic radioactive substances... supposedly well confined.. but who know if that will remain true for 100 years?? MORE to worry about than "passive smoking" or imaginary "Climate Crisis" IMO ![]() |

Chernobyl: 33 Years On, Radioactive Fallout Still Impacts Scandinavian Farmers David Nikel The smash-hit HBO series Chernobyl has introduced an entire new generation to the nuclear disaster that shook the world in 1986. Initially covered up by Soviet authorities, the disaster only came to light when nuclear power stations in Sweden—hundreds of miles away—detected high levels of radiation and began to ask questions. 33 years later, radiation remains a problem in both Sweden and Norway, especially for farmers. "Who would have thought that a small northern Norwegian mountain village could be hit by a nuclear accident in Europe. Overnight we were powerless. The Chernobyl accident shows that our food production is vulnerable. It's scary," sheep farmer Laila Hoff from Hattfjelldal told Norwegian state broadcaster NRK. She said all meat had to be destroyed in the first year following the accident. But even now in 2019, animals in 37 Norwegian municipalities are subject to radiation testing and control before they can be slaughtered. One leading researcher says it will take "decades" for the controls to no longer be necessary. [.....] In the wake of the 1986 accident, cesium-137 spread over much of northern and central Scandinavia. The weather conditions were such that Norway and Sweden were two of the countries worst hit outside the Soviet Union. In Sweden, the areas around Uppsala, Gävle and Västerbotten were hardest hit, while in Norway the area between Trondheim and Bodø along with mountainous areas further south suffered, mainly because of rainfall. ...more at link https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidnikel ... 97d8e7949f |

Raging forest infernos in Chernobyl Exclusion Zone burning for eight days are now 'close' to exploded nuclear reactor amid new fears of radiation contamination
By Jack Wright For Mailonline Published: 02:50 AEST, 13 April 2020 | Updated: 08:06 AEST, 13 April 2020 Wildfires burning through radioactive forests in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone are getting ever closer to the exploded nuclear reactor. Firefighters are rushing to build firebreaks around the sarcophagus covering the ruined plant in Ukraine amid swirling winds. There are fears that flames could reach abandoned trucks and other vehicles contaminated from the disastrous 1986 explosion. An extraordinary video from firefighter Andrei Kukib shows an emergency vehicle driving through the raging fire and smoke laying waste to the polluted 'dead zone'. Fires have been blazing for nine days in the almost uninhabited 1,000-square-mile exclusion zone surrounding the disused plant. On Tuesday, the fire covered some 87 acres, having tripled in size due to strong winds, the emergencies service said in a statement. There are fears of radiation in the ground unleashed by the infernos can reach nearest city Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and other populated areas. This could be worse if the flames reach the Chernobyl reactors. ...more at link https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... actor.html |
