Just in the last couple months I've become rather addicted to watching Netflix TV series. The first one that really impressed me was "Downton Abbey" and I'd recommend it heartily to others. That's an understatement. Now I'm streaming "Doc Martin" and loving every minute of it. I'm still amazed that for $8/mo I can stream in tons of movies and TV series/documentaries at the drop of a hat. But it's tending to make me a rather sedate, decadent type person.
Woe is me. :83

So what TV series would the rest of you recommend. (I'm partial to the BBC stuff.)

My choices may be different the the largely US membership here.

In NZ we do get most of the popular US series... more so these days... but early TV was aimed at an audience largely comprised of UK immigrants.. so there was a lot of UK stuff.

I remember fondly BBC plays and drama... but that seems to have decreased even in UK.

Also I think my choices would be OLD (from dinosaur days)

Off the top of my head, just a few.....
The Prisoner
The Avengers (1965–68: With Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) )
Dr Who (Early 60's series as well as the revised series showing now)
Monty Python
Minder
Only Fools and Horses
Steptoe and son
Tony Hancock
Dad's Army
It Aint half hot Mum
HHGTTG
Woops Apocalypse
Jeeves and Wooster

On the US side of things.....I also grew up with
Disneyland
Startrek
Lost in Space
The Man from UNCLE
Get Smart
The Monkeys :24
And MANY sit-coms (too many to list)

And...... of COURSE......

Rumpole of the Bailey
:31

It really is a favourite... I watched several reruns of it... read all the books a few times

The Who. BAD. Try again. I watched the first 15 minutes of the first episode and couldn't stand it. I don't like shows that aren't 'real', where weird things happen all the time just out of the blue, conveniently.

Thanks for your list. Now tell me if I'm wrong but you like nonsensical stupid stuff, right?

Got any lists for movies/tv series of great substance?

To paraphrase my hero Marvin the Depressed Robot....

"Substance... don't talk to me about 'substance'... life is bad enough as it is without making up MORE of it"

:31

As I said... I do like old BBC drama... plays etc.

The late Denis Potter plays especially... "Pennies from heaven" and "Singing Detective" series... plenty of substance there.... so much substance I still find new nuances in those series. :24
Detective stuff like "Morse" and "Frost"... still being repeated... when you're as old as I am there is so MUCH stuff... it's hard to list it all :24

Also....
I HAVE listed a lot.... how about you, rt? And other people.

(for movies I will start a thread in "Movies" Dept.)

Okay, I accept your answer. At least you're trying! Where are all those other members when you (I) need them! :98

Sorry RT, I haven't watched much "public tv/the BBC" in ages. I watch a lot of SciFi, so I won't even list those!! I also love premium cable series, like Game of Thrones, Dexter, Spartacus, The Sopranos, The Tudors (which you may like). I mostly watch movies, though.

My recommendations are in the movie section.

I have made some threads here on TV stuff that is available on YT

Lots of stuff is.... can take a bit of googling to find some things.

I know I watched all of The Prisoner... and MOST of the Avengers when Dianna Rigg was Emma Peel.

But anyway... still interesting to see what people like.. whether it is online or not :24

Thanks Mama....I've got the DVD's of the Soprano's and Dexter but haven't watched any of Dexter yet. I'll prolly sell the Sopranos....they're just too rank. But I'll sure look into your other suggestions. I'll go look at your recommended Movies, I like Movies too. Would you believe that I didn't watch any TV shows (just news) or Movies from about 1980 to about 2005? Honest. The last movie I could remember watching was Rosemary's Baby. How gross. LOL

I have just started watching a bunch of reruns lately since I didn't catch them when they were actually on. But for so long I watched movies and then last few years I became a news junkie.

Loved some of the old BBC stuff. Like Monty Python, Absolutely Fabulous (Ab Fab), Fawlty Towers and some more I can't remember. And now late at night I watch a bunch of old sitcoms that I never saw before.

If you don't like "rank", then don't watch Spartacus!!!

I'm just starting Season 4 of the Walton's. :roll
Laugh all you want, and call me names, but I just love this show.
I would rather watch life during the 30's great depression, than what is offered on television today.

Breaking Bad is my favorite by far.

I loved House sad when it ended.

Other Favs...

Dancing with the Stars
Hell's Kitchen
Masterchief
Duck Dynasty
Alaska State Troopers (love love love that show)
So you think you can dance (took dancing classes from age 5 to 18 so I really enjoy watching dance shows.)
American Ninja Warrior (LOL! It's really a good show of athletics. People go through really hard obstacle courses. At the end of each season, the ones who have gone far, go to the nationals.)

I loved Columbo with Peter Falk - written by Link and Levinson. I knew the father of Richard Levinson, Bill Levinson. The boys were friends from Central High, and even Jr. High before that.

Also loved Alfred Hitchcock.

After hearing my bosses and coworkers discuss "Shark Tank", I finally watched an episode and now I'm hooked!
