The Travyon Martin Case; Update 31.3: Of Tea and Skittles and Profiling
15 Saturday Jun 2013
Posted by Mike McDaniel in The Trayvon Martin Case

Recent comments, and the upcoming trial of George Zimmerman, including the never-ending statements of the Martin family and Scheme Team, including the collaboration of the Prosecution, suggest it might be a good idea to once again address two issues: tea and Skittles and “profiling.”

In many respects, the use of these terms began with the affidavit in support of an arrest warrant for George Zimmerman. However, their use ultimately stems from the construction of “The Narrative,” by the Scheme Team in collusion with Florida politicians and the national and local news media. The prosecution was, in some ways, a late-comer to the propagation of the narrative. These terms, much abused, were present at the beginnings of this case, and will play a prominent–though completely misleading–role in the prosecution’s case. As always, the media can be trusted to further the narrative, regardless of its inherently deceptive nature.
[......]
TEA AND SKITTLES:
Tea and Skittles have figured prominently in the narrative since its inception. They even appear in the affidavit:

That evening Martin walked to a nearby 7-11 store where he purchased a can of iced tea and a bag of skittles.

Obviously the continuing reference to tea and Skittles is vital to the narrative and to Martin’s image as a cherubic, scholarly, very young, slight, smiling and innocent child ruthlessly chased down and murdered by a huge, hulking, white-Hispanic racist brute who profiled him and was bent on murdering him because he was black and wearing a hoodie. And all he was doing was fetching tea and Skittles for his little brother. To those propounding the narrative, apparently tea and Skittles somehow make Martin’s fate more tragic, make him somehow more of an innocent victim. After all, don’t all innocent victims of racists brutes carry candy?

There is no legal reason to include what sort of food or drink Martin was carrying in the affidavit. It has no bearing on the case. It is not an element of the crime, nor could it possibly be an aggravating or mitigating factor at trial. And as I noted in Update 31.2 it continues to this date. Judge Nelson is allowing the Martin family and the Scheme Team to give mini press conferences in the courtroom every day. In a recent session, they again brought up tea and Skittles.

Skittles are completely irrelevant–legally speaking, and so is tea, but tea is also a lie, which the prosecution, the Scheme Team and Martin’s parents surely know.

Hard to keep the players straight.

Used drugs, liked to wave guns around, had arrest record: police chief or Trayvon?

Oh my -- Crump is out of control:

Legal Insurrection wrote:
TR: Are there broader legal implications to the case that aren’t being discussed?

BC: Yes, absolutely. And it’s troubling. The larger issue is the precedent that a potential acquittal of George Zimmerman would set. It would show how far this country still has to go with respect to offering equal protection under the law regardless of race. If Zimmerman gets off, it will tell other deranged minds and trigger-happy police officers that they can kill black and brown boys with impunity.

It is very clear from this case — and American history in general — that if it had been a black man who had tracked and killed a white child, no defense would be sufficient. That man would be in jail and likely facing the death penalty. George Zimmerman is every parent’s worst nightmare. A self-proclaimed vigilante, on prescription drugs, taunting and tracking a child in the dark
.

Found that at Legal Insurrection. They're doing daily coverage when court is in session and have interesting info on various other topics, mostly politics from a conservative pov.

The larger issue is that it establishes a precedent of tampering with the justice system to appease the BGI, if the BGI manipulates the media to an extent sufficient to potentially incite riots. The justice system should not be used to control rioters. That is the job of law enforcement and the National Guard.

Pray tell, why would someone have to *fight for their son's image, if the image wasn't tarnished from the beginning.

I want to barf at all this Saint Trayvon, college bound astronaut.

The media continues to give them a platform, so they continue to put TM on a pedestal. It is was it is, the "child" they want to portray was quickly slipping away and they refuse to admit it. The media never asks the hard questions, just takes them at their word and so it continues.

To Tracy and Sybrina, Trayvon being "high as a kite" would mean his aspirations to be a pilot. It's all in the spin.

Does the state have a juror consultant? Anyone know? The defense has a good one.

I agree with you - it's all in the spin. IMO, that's the only place it could be: in the spin. That Sybrina had kicked TM™ out of her home evidences that she knew exactly who and what her son had become. Various texts show that even though it appears he was largely absent and/or disinterested, Tracy at least had a clue what his son had become. Even when TM™ was apparently so out of control that Tracy agreed to spend some time to straighten him out, Tracy had more important things to do the night TM™ died, leaving TM™ totally unattended. That TM™ lived with an uncle instead of either of his parents shows exactly TM™'s status in their lives.

These parents are deserving of some sympathy, no doubt. However, imo, they share much of the blame for TM™'s death. If they had half of the interest in him while he was alive that they have in him now that he's dead, TM™ would likely still be alive. If those two have a conscience or even self-awareness at all, the guilt would be overwhelming.

PS - For those who read here who may not understand subtext: TM™'s parents seem to be very interested in their various lawsuits, not so interested in their son.

Sybrina was giving an interview after TM™ died. The topic was TM™. One should expect questions about the topic of the interview. One very easy question for involved parents was something along the lines of "tell me about your son." Sybrina seemed to me to have no idea how to answer a question most parents would relish. I remember her mentioning TM™ getting up and 'looking for something to eat.' Think about that for a minute.

I tried sitting on my hands, but they escaped. (You probably won't recognize my comment because I used my real name for a change. I don't usually do that for fear of that "bullseye on my back" that PJ E81 mentioned.)

I have no doubt that Tayvon's parents are guilt ridden, but I believe they are trying to ignore or deny it, maybe because that is the only way they can get through it. IMO, any responsible and decent parent would never have left a child suspended from school not grounded and unsupervised during the time of the suspension. I believe that to be gross neglect. I do have sympathy for the Martins as I would for anyone who has lost a child. I sincerely hope they have learned their lesson if they should have other children to parent.

I recall that interview very well. That was when I was still on the fence in my opinion about the incident as I had not heard any "facts" except media spin. I wanted to wait till I could consider actual evidence of the case. My first real evidence, IMO, was that interview. It gave me a clue about Trayvon's upbringing, and it was obvious to me that his mother had nothing to do with it.

Speaking of being a pilot, check out this interview with Traydad:

TM: My child was a fun-loving kid. He loved being outside and loved working with his hands -- bikes, motorcycles, anything like that. He could take a radio apart and put it back together. That's how his mind worked.

So many people want their kids to grow up to be doctors, lawyers or professional athletes. My son was interested in aviation. He took two summers and studied for his pilot-mechanic license. He would have definitely become an engineer. And I would have been so proud. Trayvon would have learned to fly.

I agree. Money is their game now and how much they can make off of Trayvon's death. Trayvon wasn't living with either parent and Sybrina didn't know her son anymore. I don't think either one feels guilty. Crump is their mentor now. As long as he tells them what to do and say, they are fine with it.

They have already made a great deal of money off the HOA. That's what they should feel guilty about.

I don't feel sorry for parents who didn't do their job raising TM and are now profiting off of it.

When did he live, the 50s? What's there to take apart in a modern radio? They consist of a PC board, with components soldered on.
