He says Pistorius claims he felt along the wall with his hand.

Barry Roux back in to question Dr Versfeld.

"If I say to you he has an impediment to defend himself, that is true," says the doctor.

"Obviously that changes if he's got a weapon."

Nel is asking Dr Versfeld about his opinion on whether Pistorius could walk in the dark with obstructions such as electric cords, a duvet or a stand in the way.

He says no.

It's about why Dr Versfeld made reference to Pistorius being "vulnerable" and "unable to ward off danger if he didn't have a weapon".

Nel realises he's entered a losing battle here and concedes to getting an affidavit.

Roux continues his housekeeping issues.

A defence exhibit needs to be handed in.

Roux wants an investigation into what happened to this electrical cord.

He wants an affidavit from whoever was in charge to explain what they think happened to it.

Nel says he doesn't think this will help.

Judge Masipa says it will help her and she is "very unhappy" about this cord going missing.

Judge Masipa is asking if the police have looked for it.

Nel says the records show that police said they didn't have it.

Oscar Pistorius is just handing over another note.

The house has now been sold, the court hears.

Some disagreement here about an electrical cord which was in Pistorius' room.

The defence say it is very important and Roux makes an order for it to be obtained.

Nel says the state does not have it.

He cannot explain what has happened to it and judge Masipa is not happy about this.

Interesting that Gerrie Nel didn't cross-examine the doctor on his assertions about Pistorius' inability to swing a cricket bat at a door...

He has compiled a report entitled 'Can one reliably differentiate between a male and female voice from 80-177m away respectively?'

It also examines the same question in terms of determining emotion from those same distances.

He is a sound and acoustics engineer called Ivan Lin.

THIS is just the sort of witness I have been calling for.... somebody to testify about human perception of sound.

UNFORTUNATELY his "Chinese accent" make him a bit hard to follow. I mean no disrespect... I have had experience with such accents and I can follow him OK.... but it is a distraction unfortunately.

Also this stuff may well get a bit "technical"... and so not easy to follow.

That dispute over the missing electrical cord obviously caused a few sparks between prosecution and defence.

The implication was that the police have bungled this in some form.

Sounds like those in court aren't too impressed.

Captain Mike Van Aardt, the detective in charge, is standing inches from Roux looking fierce.

Lin is going through various scenarios about how much sound would have been heard depending on the source and whether windows/doors were open.

It is quite tough going and Roux decides to ask for a lunch adjournment.

The judge seems happy about that and off we go.

We've wondered from the start of this trial whether Pistorius would reenact his screams.

Several state witnesses say they are sure they heard male and female screams.

The defence case is that they mistook Oscar's screams of distress for a woman.

But Lin says the conditions couldn't be replicated for a worthwhile experiment.

Lin says typically humans can differentiate between male and female screams.

But you can't do so reliably all the time.

We're having a short adjournment so a recording can be prepared prior to being heard by the court.

Nel is asking what the sound level would be for a 9mm pistol being fired into the bathroom.

He asks if it would be about 160db.

Lin replies: "It is not a question one can answer with absolute certainty."

Lin did agree, however, that through common sense you may be able to tell a female scream from a male.

The prosecution claims on the night of her death, Steemkamp screamed because she was in fear for her life.

Lin is asked about our ability to differentiate between a male and female scream.

Nel asks: "Your view is that you would not think it is possible to be able to identify a male and female scream."

He replies: "One cannot be absolutely certain."
