So I just got back from D’Souza’s movie a little while ago. I give it a 4 out of 5. I have a few issues with it.

First, overall it was a bit disjointed. I don’t know if he had difficulty figuring out what to cut and what to keep or what was going on, but he seemed to spend way too much time in the 19th century, then started jumping around sporadically in the 20th century, then raced to the finish with Hillary and into the 21st century.

He did a good job of explaining why “the big switch” was a lie, but he didn’t smoothly transition enough from start to finish to more easily relay those connections. This is mostly a film making (and story telling) thing.

Second, the characterization of the Civil War being solely about slavery, and as a literal war between Republicans and Democrats was, frankly, dishonest. I’ve studied that war for years. It was far more complicated than the generalizations made by D’Souza. I will agree that the purely slavery-related aspects of it were correct. But the overall war was about a lot more.

Third he missed a LOT of things that could have been quickly touched on which took place between the years of Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter to further make his case of how the left constantly blames the right for its own actions. The Vietnam War is an excellent example of this. I’ve lost count how many leftists have said that Vietnam was “the Republicans’ war”, completely ignoring the fact that the Democrats started it and the Republicans ended it.

Again, that’s an oversimplification of the facts, but it’s far more accurate than the Democrat line.

Fourth, there was too much of a “Republicans good, Democrats bad” vibe to the whole movie. When in reality, there have been some good democrats, and some pretty lousy Republicans. I think we are all more aware of that now than ever before. The “con game” of the Democrat party has really become the con game of the Uniparty.

I think D’Souza might have been better served in reaching a broader audience by making that point.

Finally, I think this should have been two movies: Hillary’s America and The Secret History of the Democratic Party. I am not saying the two aren’t connected…they absolutely are. What I am saying is these topics could have been better covered in two separate movies.

Otherwise, a decent offering of information a lot of people ought to know about.
