Police have shot a man who launched a knife attack in Paris dead after he killed at least one person and injuring four others.

A witness told The Independent the assailant was shouting "Allahu akbar" and trying to get into restaurants as diners barricaded the doors.

"First one we thought it was two guys fighting," said Fiona, who was having dinner in Kintaro restaurant and did not want her second name published.

"People that were queuing outside ran into the restaurant screaming, so everyone panicked and threw themselves on the floor."

Fiona said the same man came back with the knife minutes later and was "screaming Allahu akbar".

"Some guys including my friend blocked the door in case he would try to enter," she added.

"When we ran away they were still looking for the guy and one woman was laying down on the floor her neck was bleeding."

At least one person has been killed and others injured after a knifeman went on a rampage in central Paris tonight before being shot dead by police.

Four people were injured in the attack which took place near the city's main opera house in an area full of bars, restaurants and theatres which were brimming on a weekend night.

The French government denounced the attack as 'odious' as armed French police swarmed the area tonight.

Journalist Charles Pellegrin said: 'I came out of a comedy show near Opera in central Paris and was immediately told to go back in because there was a madman with a knife.

'Once back inside we heard sirens and two gun shots.

Paris attacker who stabbed 5 was on police watch list, official says

(CNN) The knife-wielding attacker who went on a stabbing rampage in Paris, killing one person and wounding four more, was born in Russia's Chechnya region, a judicial source said.
The attacker was shot dead by police after stabbing five people in a popular tourist district near the Paris opera house Saturday night, when sidewalks and restaurants were filled with people.
During the attack, he yelled the Arabic phrase "Allahu Akbar," meaning "God is great," city prosecutor François Molins told reporters at the scene.

He was on a police anti-terror watch list of people suspected of having radicalized views and posing a potential security risk, though had no criminal record, the judicial source said.
The attacker's mother and father are in police custody for questioning. A friend of the attacker has also been detained for questioning, a judicial source told CNN on Sunday.

Man Kills 1, Injures 4 in Paris Stabbing Attack

A 20-year-old man killed one person and injured four others in a stabbing attack in near the Palais Garnier in Paris on Saturday night. The attacker, who had been previously flagged as a security risk by French counterterrorism authorities, was soon shot and killed by police. ISIS later claimed that the man, a French national named Khamzat Azimov who had migrated to the country from Chechnya with his family in 2010, was a “soldier of the Islamic State.” Azimov allegedly shouted “Allahu akbar” during the attack, according to witnesses.
