Reuters now reports that a French official has told local media that at least 30 people are dead and 100 injured. The driver is also dead, the local prefect reportedly said.

• Witnesses said the driver was purposefully aiming the vehicle at the crowd and “zigzagging” so that he could hit as many people as possible. It was reported that he drove into the crowd for 2km at a speed of about 30mph (50kph).
  
• Unconfirmed reports in French media said an ID card belonging to a 31-year-old resident of Nice who had dual French-Tunisian nationality had been found in the truck.

The teenager was shot dead as he attempted to leave the train having injured a number of people

An axe-man who stormed a passenger train and hacked at terrified passengers while shouting "Allahu Akbar" has been identified as a 17-year-old Afghan who entered Germany as a lone refugee.

The attacker was identified by stunned government officials after a huge investigation was launched just hours after the bloody attack exploded.

The horror began at around 9mpm local time when the teenager stormed a train that was travelling close to Wurzburg in southern Germany.

He then shouted "Allahu Akbar" - which means God is greatest - before launching into the terrifying attack on innocent passengers and then attempting to flee.

News outlets in Germany have claimed the crazed attacker was shot dead by armed police as he tried to escape.

Early reports claim he has left at least three people fighting for their lives, and a fourth with minor injuries.

At least 14 other passengers were being treated for shock.

11 arrested in France over Nice massacre

NICE (FRANCE) (AFP) - French police on Monday arrested 11 people suspected of helping to arm the Islamist radical who crushed 86 people to death with a truck in Nice, sources close to the investigation said.

Ten suspects, including one or more Albanians, were arrested in various parts of Nice and another was detained in the western city of Nantes, the sources said.

The arrests come five months after Tunisian extremist Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel ploughed a 19-tonne truck into a crowd on the Nice seafront, further traumatising a country reeling from a series of jihadist attacks.

The victims from 19 different countries were watching a fireworks display on the Bastille Day public holiday. Over 400 people were injured.

The 11 people arrested Monday are believed to have been in contact with three people, including two Albanians, arrested in July and charged with supplying Bouhlel with an assault rifle and a pistol.

Bouhlel used the pistol in a firefight with police who shot him dead at the scene, ending his bloody rampage.

"They (the 11) did not necessarily know about the attack but they are part of a criminal milieu involved in arms smuggling," a source said, adding that the person arrested in Nantes had previously lived in Nice.

Under France's anti-terror laws, they can be held for four days before being brought before a magistrate to face charges or being released.
