Jodi Arias fires her lead attorney after public appeal to supporters to help with legal costs

  • Arias tried to fire Kirk Nurmi in June but the request was denied by the judge
  • Arias sites Nurmi's 'utter poverty of people skills' among other complaints
  • On Wednesday, Arias used an intermediary to tweet 'Donations are now being accepted for my appeals at Justice4Jodi.com'
  • Arias is fighting to stay alive as her sentencing retrial looms

Just after making a plea to the public for donations to help with her appeals, Jodi Arias wants to fire her lead defense attorney, who she says has had no contact with her since a jury chose to convict her on first degree murder charges May 23.

Arias filed a handwritten motion in Maricopa County Arizona Superior Court on Tuesday asking that Kirk Nurmi be fired as her first attorney, citing his ‘utter poverty of people skills’ and lack of ‘tolerance for my emotional and psychological shortcomings.’

Meanwhile, the convicted killer's Twitter count sent out a plea Monday seeking donations to get 'Justice4Jodi.'

n the 12-page document to Judge Sherry Stephens , Arias says attorney Kirk Nurmi hasn't seen her since jurors in her sensational murder trial reached an impasse on whether to sentence her to life in prison or death for killing her boyfriend Travis Alexander in 2008.

Arias also tried to fire him in June, but Judge Stephens did not grant her request.

Among other examples in her exhaustive plea, Arias writes that Nurmi failed her when private conversations between her and Alexander were played in open court despite her desire for the cameras to be kept out.

Arias has only positive feelings for her second chair attorney Jennifer Willmott.

Arias writes that Willmott, the brunette woman so often seen right at Arias’ side throughout her trial, picked up much of Nurmi’s slack and bore the majority of the work in the case.

The Arizona Republic notes that, as part of his closing arguments, Nurmi argued ‘it’s not even about whether or not you like Jodi Arias. Nine days out of 10, I don’t like Jodi Arias…’

Nurmi could not be reached for comment about his feelings on Arias’ most recent filing.

Indeed she is, and isn't it incredible that this is the woman who said she would gladly die haha - oh my how she's changed her perceptions of what she did that day. In my opinion, regardless of what these people say when they've been found guilty, with plenty of evidence to back their guilt up, they almost always blame everyone else, and faced with the choice do not want the death penalty regardless of what they say. Cowards.

I still cannot picture what she did that day. Was she stronger and more powerful than he was?

If she was angry enough, she would have a lot of strength. None of us were there, so we don't know the full truth of this and how long it went on that day.

The first STAB was likely the one to chest (heart) he was in pain... incapacitated after that ... in fact dying.... probably in no fit state to defend against the rest of her psycho frenzy. He went to the sink and she "rained" more stabs to his back etc. I can picture it all quite well.

I tried to picture all of this when we heard the medical examiner describe the wounds and what he thought was the first wound etc. I agree, after the initial stab when he went towards the sink, he would have been severely vulnerable to further attacks and becoming weaker by the minute, as the medical examiner said in effect he was already dying, the final straw was the awful wound to his throat.

It's unimaginable how much he must have suffered physically and mentally during that time, which is what the final decision of the sentencing rested on - did he suffer unduly etc. etc. well of course he did - therefore, she should have the death sentence.

Hard to get into the mind of a psycho, but she was obsessed with him and I think she felt he used her sexually and then threw her away. As our Joni says, if Jodi couldn't have Travis, then nobody could.

I did not follow it like I did with George's case. I was interested in Arizona law and the fact that they paid for her entire defense.

I saw this:

As of April 25, 2013, defense costs had reached almost $1.7 million, paid by taxpayers.

Jodi Arias Selling Limited Edition Prison Prints
By Colleen Curry
Oct 17, 2013 2:11pm

Image

It’s a phrase more often associated with famed painters and artists than convicted murderers, but Jodi Arias’ art website has announced that they were releasing a “limited edition” print run of her latest jailhouse drawing, “Sailing at Sunset.”

“She’s able to have access to paper and purchase color pencils, and if she wants to release her property to someone outside, she can,” said Chris Hegstrom, spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office that oversees Arias’s incarceration.

Arias was found guilty in May of stabbing and shooting to death her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander. The jury that convicted her could not agree whether Arias should receive the death penalty, and so Arias has not yet been sentenced. She remains in a women’s prison in Maricopa County, Ariz., where she is forbidden from using cell phones or computers.

Still, Arias has managed to Tweet and sell artwork online anyway, according to her websites. Attempts to contact the owners of JodiArias.com have not been returned. Arias’ friend Donavan Bering claimed she was running the Twitter account during the trial, but Bering could not be reached by ABC News today for comment.

Judge bans live TV coverage of Jodi Arias retrial, keeps case in Phoenix, won't sequester jury
Published November 15, 2013
Associated Press

PHOENIX – Live television coverage of Jodi Arias' penalty phase retrial will be banned and the case will remain in Phoenix despite defense arguments that intense publicity will make it difficult to find impartial jurors, a judge ruled this week.
