Updated today at 10:23 AM

PHOENIX – Convicted murderer Jodi Arias was back in court Monday for a quick hearing in which the judge was expected to set a date for a retrial of the penalty phase.

Monday's proceeding lasted less than 15 minutes and no decision were made. Judge Sherry Stephens said she needs time to review a pair of motions submitted by the defense last week. She continued the hearing until Sept. 16. At that time, she is expected to set a date for the penalty phase retrial and rule on the defense motions relating to media coverage and access to the prospective jurors' Twitter accounts.

Hate mail, death threats for Arias defense expert
By HLN Staff
updated 2:18 PM EDT, Mon August 26, 2013

NEED TO KNOW
  • Domestic violence expert says she received threats after testifying in Jodi Arias trial
  • Alyce Laviolette says she will not testify again in retrial

Alyce Laviolette testified on behalf of Jodi Arias as an expert witness on domestic violence. Laviolette agreed with Arias’ claims that she was a victim of abuse.

Since the trial, Laviolette has become public enemy No. 1 for passionate trial watchers who believe Arias was not a victim. CNN’s Ted Rowlands talked to Laviolette about the public’s response to her testimony, and how it has impacted her life after the trial.

I cannot believe that AL actually believed the pathological liar, JA, therefore she must have had some other motive for her testimony. That said, though, I cannot condone the death threats against her any more than the death threats against Zimmerman. Death threats and other terrorism against individuals is just way out of line!

I have to say after such a lengthy time, it still baffles me why they can't just get on with it.

I agree too that people should not receive death threats before or after they give evidence. That is way out of line.

I do not condone the death threats... or any threats either.

But neither do I condone getting up and testifying psychobabble crap. I am sure Alyce is used to talking this psychobabble to her "patients"... and that is fine... their problem if they believe this nonsense and even pay for her "counselling"... but in this case Alyce KNEW what she was proposing... justifying the unjustifiable evil of Arias. The facts of the case were there for her to see along with the rest of us. She is CLEARLY biased towards accepting ALL WOMEN as victims... that may be true in the limited population she sees in her practice... but it aint true in regards Jodi and Travis.
What did Alyce think would be the reaction to her pushing her agenda in this case?

I agree with you RR, even as I was watching her testimony I was very doubtful all the time. In fact to be honest, I had trouble taking her seriously, but regardless of any of it, I don't think she should be getting these death treats.

"........She continued the hearing until Sept. 16"

So progress then?

I guess this hearing is tomorrow and probably won't be televised. I wonder what the jury thinks about all this now because they couldn't reach a decision in the penalty phase.

I also wonder how she is housed now. Is she still in the county jail under isolation or is she in general population making friends? I believe she needs to go to prison housing.

This is all a joke and taking way too long. :doh :WW

Well folks, we'll have to wait a bit longer, because the same judge has pushed it out again - this time October 4th has been given as the date of the new hearing.

I don't live in the States so I'm struggling to understand how this all happens, this is being dragged on and on. The judge this time hasn't as yet given a reason for moving the hearing until October. Perhaps we'll hear more in the coming days.

i would not imagine she is in the general prison population. I think she will be isolated, you have to remember it is not in doubt that she murdered Mr. Alexander, she was found guilty of that, all this is about now is her sentence, that's why I think she will not be mixing with other prisoners.

Hi, Wroughead! Yes, frustrating. Could be a scheduling conflict, could be working something out behind the scenes, could be a delay just for the sake of delay thought to benefit whomever requested it. At least she's not at liberty while this goes on, which is something.

Jodi Arias to sit with prosecutors in settlement conference in Oct
Wed Sep 25, 2013 2:27 PM

Jodi Arias will sit down in a settlement conference with prosecutors on Oct. 24, according to her case calendar on the Maricopa County Superior Court website.

Arias’ defense attorneys have not said what they will be talking about.

“The Court asked if the parties would be willing to discuss a potential settlement,” said Maricopa County Attorney spokesman Jerry Cobb. “Consistent with what the County Attorney has said all along, the State is always willing to discuss possible resolutions to the case. Neither side has presented an outline of an agreement or an official position to the Court.”

Cobb said the conference will be made in front of retired Maricopa County Superior Court Judge James Keppel.

Settlement conferences are usually handled by a judge other than the one who presides over the case.

But neither side has very much in the way of bargaining power.

Arias, 33, has already been found guilty of first-degree murder, and there are three sentencing options: death, natural life in prison, or life with a chance of release after 25 years.

Under state law, prosecutor Juan Martinez and his boss, County Attorney Bill Montgomery, need a jury to get a death penalty.
