Expert: law enforcement’s approach to Ferguson protests inconsistent
by KMOV.com Staff
Posted on October 6, 2014 at 7:05 PM

(KMOV.com) – Hundreds of protesters have been arrested since demonstrations began in Ferguson.

Some have been arrested for looting and violence, but others have been arrested for failure to disperse. Critics have said many have been arrested who are not breaking the law and that police have been inconsistent in what is a crime and what is not.

“The situation is unique and the way police are treating it is unique,” said SLU professor and defense attorney Susan McGraugh.

On certain nights, McGraugh said loud protesters are not arrested, and on other evenings, quiet demonstrators who appear to be within their rights get handcuffed and jailed.

Police have told News 4 they are trying to enforce to the laws on the books. Security of the protests was taken over by St. Louis County police Friday. Over the weekend, police said no protesters. The Ferguson City Attorney said no cases have been dismissed have no decisions will be made on protesters cases for several months.

Justice Department wraps Ferguson visit, mum on status of probes
By Phillip Swarts - The Washington Times - Friday, October 3, 2014

Senior Justice Department officials concluded a two-day visit to Ferguson, Missouri, but did not give updates Friday evening on the series of federal investigations into possible race problems at local law enforcement agencies.

The department leaders met with officials from the Ferguson city government, Ferguson Police Department, and local FBI, U.S. Attorney, and Justice Department Civil Rights Division offices, according to agency spokeswoman Dena Iverson.

Among the delegation that went were Molly Moran, acting assistant attorney general for civil rights; Mark Kappelhoff, deputy assistant attorney general; and Ronald Davis, director of the Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS).

Ms. Iverson said “there will be additional opportunities for community members to meet with Civil Rights Division staff” to discuss the investigations into the Aug. 9 shooting death of an black teenager by a white police officer.

The protesters "victory" with the five second rule was really not a victory at all......read the first sentence of the judge's order.... the 5 second rule is ONLY unenforceable "when protesters are not breaking any law" http://www.stlpublicradio.org/papertrai ... injunction

I already did. :neener
I tweeted and said quoting Carmelita at Random Topics. Then I posted the tweets at CTH. That used to be best way to get a pic posted at CTH. NOW you can just post a url of an image location anywhere. It has to be on a new and separate line, bot in amongst any typed text etc.

So, for instance,

http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y441/Uther3/Working%20Uploads2/BwiJ1_OCcAEDTJV_zps284a36aa.jpg

.. would result in an image at CTH

Having said all that....
The "image location" of your pics is a bit weird? Things that end in .jpg or .png etc is what I mean
(I am surprised that your image location works here, but it does)

Figures Showing Huge Jump in Ferguson Voter Registration are Very Inaccurate
By Jessica Lussenhop Tue., Oct. 7 2014 at 1:00 PM

In a statement released early this afternoon, Senator Rita Heard Days, Democratic director of the St. Louis County Election Board, admitted that her office released wildly inflated figures in response to press inquiries about how many new voters have registered from Ferguson.

Less than a week ago, Days' office reported that 3,287 brand new voters registered in Ferguson after the shooting death of Michael Brown on August 9. The figures seemed to show an energized voter base and the promise of political change in Ferguson -- the current mayor James Knowles was elected with only 1,324 votes back in April.

But according to her latest release, Days' office is now putting that figure much, much lower -- it seems only 128 new voters have registered in Ferguson.

"Turns out that was an incorrect report that we were using," she told Daily RFT.

Days said that the much larger figure came from something called the "voter summary report" which she thought was a measure of all new registrations coming in. But after looking into it further, she said the "exorbitantly high number for the city of Ferguson...just did not jive." After consulting with the Missouri Secretary of State's office, Days said she realized that the 3,000 figure is actually a tally of the total number of interactions with Ferguson residents that had anything to do with their voter registration, so that included changes of address and other alterations to records. When broken down by type of activity, she saw that the actual figure is only 128 new registered voters.

"Let me apologize for that," Days told Daily RFT. "There's really no excuse, it's just an explanation."

Exclusive: Missouri police plan for possible riots if Brown cop not charged
Reuters By Tim Reid 1 hour ago

FERGUSON MISSOURI (Reuters) - Missouri authorities are drawing up contingency plans and seeking intelligence from U.S. police departments on out-of-state agitators, fearing that fresh riots could erupt if a grand jury does not indict a white officer for killing a black teen.

The plans are being thrashed out in meetings being held two to three times a week, according to people who have attended them. The FBI said it was also involved in the discussions.

Details of the meetings and intelligence sharing by Missouri police agencies and their counterparts in other parts of the country have not been reported before.

The grand jury is expected to decide next month whether to bring criminal charges against police officer Darren Wilson, who shot dead Michael Brown, 18, on Aug. 9 in Ferguson, Missouri.

Activists: ‘Don’t come to Ferguson if you aren’t ready to die’
By Jessica Chasmar - The Washington Times - Wednesday, October 8, 2014

Image

Three prominent organizers of the protest movement in Ferguson, Missouri, say they are willing to die in the streets if the police officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown is not “brought to justice.”

The organizers told a rally in New York Tuesday night that there would be a fierce backlash if a grand jury declined to indict Officer Darren Wilson, The Guardian reported.

Police officer fatally shoots teenager in south St. Louis
3 hours ago • By Margaret Gillerman and Valerie Schremp Hahn

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the officer was patrolling the neighborhood for a private firm at the time of the shooting. He confirmed that the victim was 18 years old.

Dotson said the officer was in a car when he saw three males and one of them started to run away but stopped. The officer did a U-turn and then all three ran. He drove through streets following them and then chased them on foot. He then got into a physical confrontation with one that escalated into gunfire.

The teenager had a gun and fired at least three shots at the officer, who returned fire, the chief said. The teenager attempted to fire more but his gun jammed, Dotson said.

The officer fired 17 times, he said. It is unclear how many times the teenager was shot.

Police recovered a 9mm Ruger, he said.

Dotson did not identify the 18-year-old but said he "was no stranger to law enforcement."

The chief said he is unaware of any video that captured the shooting.

He also said there had been no arrests of those involved in the protests that followed, during which several police vehicles were damaged.

Fury as off-duty St Louis police officer working in private security shoots dead high school student, 18, in gun fight - just 10 miles from where Michael Brown was killed

  • An off-duty police officer, who has not been identified, shot and killed high school student Vonderrit Myers Jr. last night in Shaw, Missouri
  • The officer, who was patrolling the area for a private security company, approached the men after he thought they were acting suspiciously
  • They ran and he could see that Myers had a gun, police said
  • The officer, who was in uniform, reached the man and a scuffle ensued
  • Myers shot at the officer three times before the cop pulled out his own gun and shot at the teen 17 times, killing him, police said
  • The teenager was wearing a monitoring ankle bracelet as a condition of bail in a gun case in June
  • But his family members insist the teenager was unarmed and was holding a sandwich at the time: 'It's like Michael Brown all over again'

An 18-year-old man has died after an off-duty police officer shot at him 17 times - just miles from where unarmed teen Michael Brown was gunned down by a cop in August.

Police said that Vonderrit Myers Jr. first opened fire on the unidentified 32-year-old officer in Shaw, Missouri, which is less than 10 miles from Ferguson, where Brown was shot dead on August 9.

The officer, who is a six-year veteran of the force, was in a car working a secondary job for a private security company and paroling the area when he saw three males in the street and thought they were acting suspiciously, St Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said in a press conference.
