Post-Dispatch reporter recovering at hospital after attack while covering Ferguson

St. Louis Post-Dispatch
By Kim Bell | August 10, 2105, 11:00AM CT

Post-Dispatch reporter Paul Hampel [@phampel] was beaten, bloodied and robbed by a group of attackers as he covered the Ferguson protests Sunday night.

Hampel said he was taking photos and videos of break-ins along West Florissant Avenue shortly before he was attacked. Suddenly, he said, he was rushed from behind.

"I got swarmed, beaten down really bad," he said.

The attackers punched him in the face, hit him in the head at least three times and kicked him in the back of the head when he was on the ground, Hampel said.

The attackers took his phone and wallet and left. Hampel headed back to the police line and encountered New York Times photographer Whitney Curtis. He told her he needed an ambulance.

Someone laid him down on the grass and he doesn't remember much after that.

He said he suffered a concussion and was kept overnight at a hospital for evaluation. He said he also suffered a puncture wound in his knee, perhaps from glass in the parking lot.

Posted 12:30 pm, August 10, 2015, by Joe Millitzer, Updated at 01:31pm, August 10, 2015

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – About 200 demonstrators marched from Christchurch Cathedral to the Thomas Eagleton Federal Courthouse as a part of the “Moral Monday” protests . They are marking the one year anniversary of the death of Michael Brown.

Many are carrying signs, chanting and praying to make the point that #BlackLivesMatter. They say that all lives matter but African Americans need better treatment by police and the court system. They want the Justice Department to take action.

Demonstrators crossed police barriers at around 1:30pm. Some protesters have been placed under arrest.

Organizers have more events planned for the remainder of the day. In the past the day of civil disobedience has included blocking highways and shutting down big businesses across St. Louis County.

Listen to the Chant Ferguson Protesters Were Caught on Video Shouting Shortly Before Gunfire Erupted
Aug. 10, 2015 9:49am Jason Howerton

Shortly before gunfire erupted during protests marking the anniversary of officer-involved fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, demonstrators were caught on video chanting that they were “ready for war.”

Image

“Ready for what?! We’re ready for war!” the protesters chanted.

The video was tweeted by St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Paul Hampel at 10:47 p.m. central time — and gunfire rang out just after 11 p.m., police said. Police shot and critically injured one suspect who allegedly opened fire on plainclothes detectives.

Separately, police said a 17-year-old male has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon and one count of resisting arrest after he fired shots near the protesters late Sunday. He is being held on $100,000 bond.

The anniversary of Brown’s killing, which cast greater scrutiny on how police interact with black communities, has sparked days of renewed protests, though until Sunday they had been peaceful and without any arrests.

Before the gunfire, protesters were blocking traffic and confronting police. One person threw a glass bottle at officers but missed.

For the first time in three consecutive nights of demonstrations, some officers were dressed in riot gear, including bullet-proof vests and helmets with shields. Police at one point early Monday shot smoke to disperse the crowd that lingered on West Florissant, Belmar said.

One officer was treated for cuts after a rock was thrown at his face, and two officers were pepper-sprayed by protesters, county police spokesman Officer Shawn McGuire said in an email. Five people were arrested, according to records McGuire released.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
