The man with the (literally) golden boots... why Leigh Halfpenny will be wearing the most expensive footwear on show this weekendBy Heledd Pritchard

The precious 9ct gold for the boots hails from the Clogau St David’s Mine within the hills of SnowdoniaLeigh Halfpenny has often been referred to as “the man with the golden boot” but Welsh Rugby Union’s heroic fullback has taken that title to a whole new level after unveiling his new 9ct Welsh Gold footwear.
On Saturday Gorseinon’s finest export will be sporting his new special-edition Under Armour ClutchFit boots which contain 9ct rare Welsh gold studs for Wales’ World Cup warm-up match against Ireland in Dublin.
The precious metal for the boots hail from the Clogau St David’s Mine within the hills of Snowdonia.
Halpenny said: “I’m hoping that the gold boots will bring me and the Welsh team a lot of luck over the coming months.
“I’ve got all the best kit, now it’s up to me to go and do the business out on the field.”
Created by Under Armour, the design of the boots was inspired by the recently launched red and gold Welsh Rugby kit and feature “Oxblood” red and gold colourings from the upper to the sole of the shoe.
The standard ClutchFit boots retail at £130 but Under Armour are unable to provide a value for the gold edition Halfpenny will wear.
Leigh might be the first rugby player to wear actual gold on his feet but he’s not the first to sport flashy footwear.
In 2005 Gavin Henson caused a stir when he wore gold-coloured boots at the Six Nations.
Halfpenny meanwhile, who is third on the list of all time Welsh top point scorers will be hoping to make more of an impact for his goalkicking than the colour of his daps at next month’s Rugby World Cup.
